The End of an Era

veritoanimus, I've actually been contemplating building a Venser deck myself since my meta is heavy on the aggressive decks. I also don't want to copy my friend's deck. Do you have a decklist in mind that would work? I haven't seen any threads on Venser control. I also appreciate your suggestions, but I really can't stand playing combo decks as I find them unfun for everyone and Burning Vengeance is way too easy to hose. Furthermore, U/W delver is a possibility but I'm trying to be a bit original also haha.

Mono green, R/G aggro and stuff aren't really my style as I don't own any of the swords and they are a bit out of my price range. I'm also considering zombies, but I personally prefer the mono black versions.

I apologize for seeming demanding. I guess I'm just looking for a deck that fits in my meta with various lines of play (I mean I would even consider playing RDW if I could find a build that seemed fun for extended amounts of time)

So I took some time off from MTG and have recently come back to a pretty diverse metagame which is nice. However, with all the decks out there, I'm kind of at a loss of what to play. I'm a pretty casual player, mainly FNMs and stuff. My local meta consists primarily of a U/W Venser+Stonehorn deck, U/B zombies, R/B zombies, R/G Aggro and Sorin Tokens.

Anyone have any idea of a fun deck that I could play pretty competitively against those decks? I initially wanted to play Splinterfright (similar version to Kibler's), but despite the fun factor, it just feels so underwhelming. I'm also considering building MonoRed since I have most of the cards for it, but I'm worried that the lack of options and linear play will bore me, unless someone has some spicy RDW brew that works (I was considering building a Spikeshot+Runechanter syngery but it seems a lil janky). I've tested UR Tempo and RUG Huntmaster recently and they are fun, but seem really inconsistent.

Thank you so much for the advice and help! Much appreciated!

I've been doing a lot of testing with RUG Huntmaster and it's definitely a tricky deck to play with a lot of answers, but you gotta have the right ones at the right time. I do really like the shenanigans that you can do with Moonmist though so I'm gonna try that out.

Has anyone seen Jacob Van Lunen's recent RUG aggro decklist? I was doing a search on starcity and I saw it but do not have premium. For people who have seen it, is it comparable to the brews here?

Omg, there are like 4 illusion decks that went 4-0 in the Standard Daily on 11/12 and the deck has been placing well int he premier events in addition to having good results everywhere. Did Delver really power up this deck that much?

If you are in RUG colors, why not try to fit in Daybreak Ranger? With the amount of creatures being played in the meta, a flipped Daybreak can remove most of the threats on the board except titans.

It seems Ali Aintrazi has built and been impressed by U/G Counterwolves also. Anyone know his list? Curious to see if it differs from the MTGO lists.

I have a few questions regarding actually playing the deck. I've adapted to the U/W Delver Illusions and I wasn't sure how to change my playstyle. So if we have a hand consisting of Ponder, Delver, Bear, Lord, Land, Land, Land - how do we proceed with such a hand?

In general, do we try to drop Delver asap? Bear asap?

Makes a lot of sense. I'll definitely switch out geistflame for gut shot and see how it goes. I'll def give Fireslinger a go. I'm assuming Hero of Oxid Ridge is to bypass Timely tokens? Thanks!

Furnace Scamp isnt very good against Timely Reinforcements which is the best anti-aggro card at the moment. You deal alot of damage and lose your board presence only for them to gain it back.

Geistflame im not a big fan of, but if it works for you, then I dont see why not. Same with Volt Charge. The whole proliferate/Koth Ultimate is too cute for me. Also your not really getting as much value against control and ramp decks as you would against other aggro decks by blowing them out by proliferating your +1/+1 counter dudes.

Geistflame has merrits against Wolf Run decks killing their inkmoths and mana dorks.

Waif isnt terrible against those decks. It allows you to punish people when they keep shakey hands. 2 or 3 hits with a Predator is a great start.

I wouldnt maindeck a manabarbs. Having dead cards in your hand in the mirror isnt good as it would be better served as more burn.

Basically there is no 'best' way to play RDW at the moment (part of the reason I feel we arn't tier 1). Volt Charge is a fine card and has alot of Synergies however it competes with incinerate as our big burn spell. Either choice is fine. Gut Shot and Geistflame, and to a lesser extent shock/galvanic blast, compete for the smaller slot. Arc trail is somthing I would heavily recomend somewhere in your 75. Atleast 3 of them.

Just play with that you feel comfortable with and the cards you are farmiliar with.

Thanks for the advice. However, there won't be a mirror since I'm the only essentially playing an aggro deck in my area, which is why I'm looking to optimize the mainboard against control and ramp without worrying about any aggro decks.

Basically my meta has only Solar Flare, Wolf Run Ramp, U/B control and U/W control, how would you tweak my mainboard to metagame these decks? Here is my current list:

What should I take out and put in to have a good Game 1 against the decks I mentioned above? Also, since they are mainly control decks and slower decks (except Ramp), Would Reckless Waif and Manabarbs mainboard be a good idea?

I'm a bit at a loss of what to do against WolfRun Ramp, Spellskite and Wurmcoil Engine. Wolf Run decks seem to drop their threats nearly as quickly as us. Turn 4-Turn 5 and you're Stormblood Berserkers and Stromkirk nobles are staring down Solemn Simulacrum + Titan/Engine. What do you guys do against Wurmcoil in Game 1 if threaten effects aren't mainboarded? Does a Spellskite slow down our deck a lot? Any tips for Game 1 against Wolf Run?

Does anyone know the difference btwn Dungrove Green (essentially mono green with wolf run) and the normal R/G Wolf Run ramp in terms of why one would choose one deck over the other and how the matchup differs for each deck?

How come no one uses Reckless Waif? She seems pretty solid on paper. Is she harder to flip than expected?

Is Koth necessary? I was just wondering if there are any solid lists that don't use Koth.

How about a heavy land destruction package?

Gives a decent mid-range strategy with some pretty hefty land destruction in the form of Beast Within, Bramblecrush, Acidic Slime.
