I'd urge everyone to let the OP handle contact with this person. I don't think the seller would appreciate getting 67 phone calls in the middle of the night and I doubt that would increase our chances of getting scans.

TBH now that the OP has published this on a public forum, the guy is going to get inundated with people wanting to buy them and flog them on ebay.

Oh, and WotC are probably about to send around the guy's in suits to retrieve their property.

Edit: And using the power the internet it seems to be incredibly easy to find out who the seller is - I'm not about to shell out myself but for 10 bucks a number of services will get you a name and address. I feel slightly sorry for the poor sap.

One guy would not risk his career and the legal implications of what he was doing to do this. On the career side, this would cost the manufacturer their contract and the individual his job. On the legal side, you better believe you can't take copyrighted materials from a client you've signed an NDA with and pocket them home.

Heck, Wizards has fired employees for such misconduct with the (limited) printing capabilities they (had?). Upperdeck lost the rights to Yu-Gi-Oh! over something similar too...

You must be under the misapprehension that the guy selling these is a responsible mid-level employee with a vested interest in the company rather than a low-level stockman or menial who signed a whole bunch of paperwork when he got the job because someone told him to.

It can be as illegal or stupid as you like, but I'm pretty sure that has never stopped humanity from trying it anyway.

It looks like I can get one for £100/approx. $160. Even though that's not bad compared to some of the prices I've seen on here, it's a lot for what boils down to 18 cards; going to have to think about it.

Just had my LGS emailing me with the same price. Still taking it as the cards I don't want will still happily cover the cost.

I think that if everyone in this thread completely understood how much money it costs to produce and ship a box of magic cards, there would be no room for who is and isn't a sucker.

Think about this. What if we were able to conclude that it costs only $10 to produce and ship a box of magic cards. All artists, manufacturing materials, labor, and shipping. And the reason it is $10 is because they can safely produce 100,000 boxes because there is just that much demand for it.

Sold at $30 a box, that company profits 200,000 dollars. This isn't even including what they make from online magic.

I think $118 a box is asking too much. I think on that scale, each box can easily be produced at $10. I think magic is too expensive and the ones paying for it are the players. That's then, their problem.

I've said it once, I'll say it again. I personally know people who borrow decks and win tournaments with them. Real deal tournaments.

Magic the card collecting game is a joke. Magic the Gathering is very awesome.

You've obviously been out of the loop for a while and must have missed out on the whole Capitalism vibe that's been all the rage for the past century or so.

I guess you guys haven't been reading the thread up to this point, but this set will NOT be selling for $75. The average price they seem to be preordering for on ebay is $250 with some as high as $400.

Seem to be an awful lot of people on this thread getting it for RRP from their LGS. A lot of people seem to be looking at the pretty small numbers selling for ridiculous prices on Ebay and drawing a completely unwarranted conclusion that this is what every LGS is charging.

The MOTL price list (which uses averages from completed eBay auctions in the last month) currently says:

Card Price StdDev Average High Low Change RawN
    ---- ----- ------ ------- ------- ------ ------ -----
    Diaochan, Artful Beauty, 41.34, 0.00, 41.34, 41.34, 41.34, 0.00, 1
    Loyal Retainers, 74.95, 24.95, 74.95, 99.90, 50.00, 0.00, 2

While the numbers are low, it pretty much points to there being no chance of getting either of these for $25 a copy off eBay.

But as has been pointed out elsewhere, a regular P3K Xhiahou was hitting about $100 prior to the judge foil being released. It now sells for $40 with the judge foil sitting at $20. Foil Loyal Retainers at $25 in the medium term doesn't seem unrealistic.

A quick trawl of Ebay gives these average prices for non-foil versions of the cards - I've notionally priced the P3 cards at $25. Figures in brackets are foiled prices. Interestingly, ignoring the two P3 cards, the value of the set in non-foil is $75 so no one can complain about the pure value of the set Smile

    Kaalia - $9
    Mimeoplasm - $1
    Edric - $3
    Maelstrom Wanderer - $7
    Vela - $1
    Duplicant - $3 ($30)
    Dragonlair Spider -$2
    Decree of Pain - $4 ($20)
    Chaos Warp - $3
    Desertion - $4
    Mirari's Wake - $4 ($25)
    Sylvan Library - $8
    Rhystic Study - $3 ($20)
    Scroll Rack - $16
    Mind's Eye - $5 ($10)
    Command Tower - $2 ($30)
    Diochan - $25
    Loyal Retainers -$25

What's your point exactly? I clearly said it was known by the middle of febuary at the latest, his post was made on the very last day of febuary stating it was still not known by the organizers at that point. I knew the location 2 weeks before his post date so when exactly the organizers knew is unclear but it was way before then.

The release of info was poorly handled but it was out there, just hard to find.

His point being that I posted information at the end of February which I had been given by the tournament organiser (and was also confirmed by Wizards customer service) but you wanted to nit pick that you knew about it earlier thus inferring that I'm an idiot for not knowing.

The main point is that the details for the UK's premier magic event this year was not posted on the Wizards site until about a month beforehand by which point any cheap, decent local accommodation has been hoovered up by the select few who were apparently in the know. Its no wonder that the growth of Magic in the UK is so stunted by comparison with our European neighbours when Wizards apparently cares so little about its customer base.

It was cool for a couple of days, but now we are feeling the backlash for it by getting a tight grip on spoilers.

IMO it wasn't even vaguely cool as it completely deflated the whole build up to a new set. I completely lost interest in the set because I knew its full content weeks beforehand.

Any idea where the GP Manchester event location might be? I'll probably book my flight this week, wouldn't mind getting the hotel taken care of too.

As of last Friday the event organizer didn't know.

My bad, didn't mean box. Don't remember what stores called it. For the sake of appeasing nitpickers, they're still making at least $50 off a what, $99 box? It's like a penny to print 20-30 cards, and maybe a few dollars total on shipping for the box. It's not like they're bleeding here; they're selling paper.

A sad lack of understanding about retail economics. I doubt that WotC make more than $10-15 off each box sold after they discount R&D, marketing, manufacture, distribution to the middlemen who distribute to the stores and the cut the middlemen and stores take. Not that they don't still make a healthy profit, but then they must blow a bundle on each pro tour just in terms of travel costs (400 players x at an average of at least $500 on flights), prizes and organisation.

Back on topic - top 8 pins, what top 8 pins ... oh right, I really ought to top 8 more.

I presume we can interpret this request as "I've got some sealed Alliance boxes and want to open all the boosters with FoWs in them then sell the FoWless boosters on ebay to someone hoping to rip FoW."

Amusing how nearly everybody who is disappointed says it's because of crap cards, then lists completely different cards as being crap.

Legends are not artifacts. They're personal, and different ones are important to different people. I'll take a product like this over "$50 bill and friends" any day of the week. It may not have the trade bait in it that other sets had, but who were you really trading Xiahou Dun to, anyway? A $100 card you can't turn into a dual is worth $0 rotting in your binder.

I suspect people wouldn't mind so much if there was a realistic chance of getting the set at retail price. Over here in the UK the cheapest price I have seen is £80 (~$130). Given that the average player probably only wants about half the cards in the box that works out at almost $20 a piece for the cards that you actually want.
