The reason Unstable sold "pretty well" was largely due to the gorgeous full-art lands rather than the other cards themselves. A foil land would cover the cost of a box easily on its own if not close to it.

Flicker of Fate is a great enabler with the black aura that draws you 3 upon entering the battlefield. And that red aura that deals 4 damage upon entry. Wow...

This is kinda poetic...complete silence and tightlipped-ness during the War of the Spark arc and now leaks are flowing like a bladder infection. Can't help but grin at this. I mean remember what happened when we got the leaked sheets of Ixalan like a few months in advance? Look at what it did for interest and excitement in the set (to some extent).

Edit: It feels like they're finally doing teh enchantment theme right this time around.

I'd like to think Landfall will return. The quest-like enchantments in the original Zendikar used Landfall as part of their build-up effect so it would seem silly not to bring that back. Or if not, at least some activity which demonstrates the adventure-ish feel the original setting brought us pre-Eldrazi.

    Ashnod, please!!!

    This and Tormod.

What I'd like to see are creatures with legendary names but weren't listed as legends due to their early entry in the game. So things like Aladdin, Abu Jafar, Ali Baba, and the like. I'd really like to see a Niall Silvain that's actually a legend and not just an ouphe with a superiority complex Thumbs Up

    My wishlist is:

    • Oliver Farrel
    • Tourach
    • Jhurana Rure (been saying this a lot lately!)
    • References to oldwalkers (Greensleeves, Kristina of the Woods et al)
    • Drafna
    • Daria
    • Hurkyl
    • Nevinyrral
    • Tocasia
    • Rana, Suq'Ata Market Fool
You'll notice my heavy emphasis on original characters in magic lore for those who started in its early days. Because reasons. And who wouldn't want to smash the board with a Tourach and chant his hymn at the same time? Think of the flavour folks!

    Edit: Added some others.

What I like about this too is how they sort of borrowed Ferocious for this set without directly referencing it by ability word. I guess they did the same with Heroic in a sense too.

Nice to see devotion back too.

Seeing Sagas here actually makes sense. Love the artwork for the red one shown here. Some observations:

    • Underworld Dreams as uncommon? It was originally uncommon in Legends so don't see why it can't here
    • Heroic back indirectly is nice to see.
    • Those basics are fugly. What were they thinking?
    • Enchantment creatures: Check!
    • Cool legends to build around in EDH.
    • Escape is a cute mechanic. Works well with those that care about being in exile a la Misthollow Griffin and Eternal Scourge.

Kinda funny how during the wrap-up of the War of the Spark arc they were so tight-lipped and extra careful about letting product leaks slip and now that it's over it seems to happen a bit more loosely this time around. Hmm...I agree with someone further up. This smells like a plant.

Break out your Treasure Cruises folks and use 'em while they're still legal. The benefit is that all those janky rares from those legal blocks will suddenly become hot again. Hello $50 Teferi again?

Return to Ravnica is an interesting arbitrary point to start. I was thinking maybe at the start of the decade for something more easily measurable.

Heh this is like the new Extended for Modern almost if you think about it.

Perhaps this time around people can refrain from using the incorrect term "Greco-Roman" to describe a plane that is expressly not influenced by Rome.

It won't happen until we get a real roman plane (like the home of Licia, sanguine tribune)

I still think that decision not to have it be Greek and Rome is kind of silly. While I can see a Rome world being different from Greek world I feel they'd simply overlap a bit too much without some other major draw.

    Please no more this.

MaRo (and most other content creators) are already presuming that most of their audiences are idiots. Please dont encourage them.

Greece and Rome are nothing alike, except one day a bunch of militant rapists decided that they might need some cultural values if their cartel was going to last more than a generation or three after achieving a comfortable amount of assets, so they went and conquered a country which had some and took that too.

You sure about that? Throne of Eldraine was created after Lorwyn was disliked as it remained too true to the source material and not as trope-y as players would have liked or known about. The player base proved their idiocy than anything else. MaRo et al were just responding in kind.

Ya know, people freaked out about it way back in the days of, say, Saga and Masques blocks--when they could reasonably do it. But now it's a bit too late to do that as we're on our 82nd standard-legal set.

There would have to be a SUPER good reason for them to do so otherwise.

Pretty much every edition (core set) from Alpha up to about...oh, 7th edition, were set on Dominaria. I want to say 8th-10th were but I cannot be sure. I know some of the M sets focused on Shandalar and Origins was a cluster**** of different places due to the emphasis on the 'walkers pre- and post-spark activation.

Edit: Ok, I lied. Sets like 4th Edition and 5th had cards from Legends, which some supposedly took place on Shandalar (Osai Vultures) and Segovia (Segovian Leviathan), for example. That doesn't included sets like Revised and onward with reprints from Arabian Nights which we know took place on Rabiah. So whoever above said it did say that no edition has a single plane where they take place. I'm not even sure that Alpha through Unlimited took place on Dominaria as a whole either.

  • posted a message on Wizards really does like to waste plot threads don't they?
You can probably blame the lack of story guidance primarily on the fact that they had been more or less wrapping up one of the original big storylines the game has known since its inception and were trying to find ideas on how to move forward. From the Brothers' War and its tie in to the Weatherlight cycle, the arc spanned over a decade of lore and set design and character development etc. That's a lot to consider and I guess they were trying to find their right point and specific content to build on that would whet the lore tongues of those in the game. It's like the post-Apocalypse storyline with the Mirari felt weird and almost out of place.

The Gatewatch arc was an interesting concept but I think they took too long to build on it where it got to the point of people being tired of it way before it should've ended. The wrap-up in War felt premature. Hopefully they've learned their lesson(s) over the last 26 years and know how to develop a sound story without the sudden knee-jerk reaction or improper planning and developmental stages in between.

So essentially this plus Cataclysm/Duneblast and selecting Transguild Courier as one of the perms to save, you win?

Huge setup for the payoff. Maybe fun in EDH but outside of that I don't see it doing much.
