I agree that Gut Shot is a Time Walk against most decks for two life in this format, but so is Galvanic Blast for . I grant Gut Shot being cooler in that you can play it and a turn one creature... and requires no to be in the casting deck, but Galvanic Blast just a stronger burn spell with better late game applications (especially with metalcraft). But once I get out of decks with red... yes, Gut Shot is better for timewalking aggro.
But even though I recommend Gut Shot less than Galvanic Blast (as a red player is my secondary color) and then point to Dismember as an ideal example does not mean that I don't think that it shouldn't be played. It's still a great card.

Anyway, I'm not sure if you need four Essence of the Wild with four Green Sun's Zeniths. Three should be able to cut it because if you stick one, sticking a second one should be easy because copies of Essence of the Wild still turn other creatures into Essence of the Wild.
The thing I think your deck needs most though is another win condition beyond because without Essence of the Wild, your creatures get a little lackluster. While I don't know what you'd cut for it, I think an Angelic Destiny or two would help you out because anything with Angelic Destiny becomes a threat your opponent has to deal with, especially if you put one on Essence of the Wild. -
Nov 12, 2011Mockingbird posted a message on TempoWhere's Preordain? And that aside, I'm assuming that this is not a budget deck (with Snapcaster Mage), so I would suggest that you could cut 4-8 Islands for Scalding Tarn and Misty Rainforest to shuffle away cards you do not need from Brainstorm or Ponder. And lastly, you could get some extra advantage by cutting a dagger or two for any of the //gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&name=+[Sword">+[of]+![Kaldra]+![Ages]+![Meek]+![Vengeance]+![Chosen]+![Wall]+![the]"]Mirrodin Swords.Posted in: thnkr Blog

Nov 11, 2011Mockingbird posted a message on [RET] WG MidrangeWhether you go Birds or Emissary depends on who you're trying to get the jump on. Right now based on the meta I am seeing, I'd say you're doing fine with Emissary (and Pilgrim) because opponents are trying to kill it often enough that you get his effect, and if they don't kill it, it gets in for some annoying damage.Posted in: jander_blackheart Blog
What I would suggest though is at least a second Green Sun so that you have a better chance of tutoring out something worthwhile. -
Nov 11, 2011Mockingbird posted a message on [Standard] Mono B AggroHave you heard of the new Red-Blue Deck Wins with Snapcaster Mage and Delver of Secrets? You may want to give that one a shot if this one doesn't work out.Posted in: Self Medicated's Pharmacy
Wolf Run Red though is looking pretty good. Couple of things:
Grim Lavamancer is amazing when you have a reliable way to stockpile your graveyard... and without the fetchlands, I'd say there isn't a reliable enough way to do that in standard right now... so Grim Lavamancer would often be an awkward early game, a slower middle game where your exploding, and in the late game, I think you'd wrapped things up by then or otherwise be dealing with creatures bigger than Lavamancer can deal with. I'd say Dismember would be a better choice for the time being.
If you want to find a way to fit Volt Charge in, I would suggest moving some of the Gut Shots to the side board. I understand that 1 damage kills so much and turns bloodthirst online without mana, but that's not something I would bank on being a four-of since the current standard is still diverse enough for control.
But you look like you have a good start, so I hope you work it out. -
Oct 19, 2011Mockingbird posted a message on RUG ControlIn terms of finishers, I think you need at least one more Frost Titan because it helps suppress opposing threats like Inkmoth Nexus, Kessig Wolf Run, other Titans, Birthing Pod, and suppress mana. And the bonus of being "soft hexproofed" is relavent with spot removal running rampant in Black and Green, and red running large burn like Brimstone Volley.Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog
In terms of your mana, I think you need to adjust to take more advantage of acceleration because the Share Lands are not always as cooperative as we would like for them to be. I play Jund, and the benefit of Solemn Simulacrum, Rampant Growth, and Viridian Emissary are amazing at color fixing as much as ramping. While Emissary may not be all that necessary in this control...ish build, I would suggest trying Solemn Simulacrum in place of Druidic Satchel and a pair of Rampant Growth/Viridian Emissary in place of two Ponders. You may have to adjust your mana base with -1 Island +1 Forest or something minor like that as well if you do this.
Finally, you may want to try a Primeval Titan or two. In this deck, they 1. Fetch lands, meaning that if you've already reached the top of your curve, you don't have to worry about leaving countermagic up after the first one resolves, you'll have plenty of lands, 2. You fetch specific lands, namely that lone Kessig Wolf Run, 3. You're deck will have been thinned by two lands, which at that point, you don't want to draw anyway, and 4. a 6/6 with Trample is a great card to equip with Sword of Feast and Famine. I'm not sure how seriously I suggest Primeval Titan though considering your deck is more about control than ramp, but the option should linger. -
Oct 10, 2011Mockingbird posted a message on [Standard] Naya's Wolf RunSun Titan gets back those early drops I lost, and also lands that I lost, namely Inkmoth because those are going to be dying right and left now that people know just how good they are in Wolf Run Ramp. It's probably not an idea that I'd take to states, but it's something I'd like to tinker with for fun.Posted in: Mockingbird Blog

Oct 6, 2011Mockingbird posted a message on TinkerIt's broken, if you get the most amazing opening hand:Posted in: Prophet's Decks
I would suggest:
-1 Blightsteel Colossus
-26 Islands
-2 Dread Statuary
+4 See Beyond
+4 Ponder
+4 Preordain
+2 Lightning Greaves
+3 Halimar Depths
+3 Misty Rainforest
+4 Scalding Tarn
+1 Seat in the Synod
+4 Inkmoth Nexus
So you have:
DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards Land: 35
14 Islands
3 Halimar Depths
3 Misty Rainforest
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Seat in the Synod
4 Inkmoth Nexus
3 Darksteel CitadelCreatures: 3
3 Blightsteel Colossus
Artifacts: 2
2 Lightning Greaves
Soceries: 20
4 Preordain
4 Ponder
4 See Beyond
4 Treasure Hunt
4 Tinker
This should help you control what you're getting from your deck without having to mull away all land hands or hands without Treasure Hunt, and with Lightning Greaves, you don't have to give your opponent a turn to deal with Blightsteel with say... Path to Exile. -

Sep 8, 2011Mockingbird posted a message on The New World of Innistrad, Part 3: The Legends of InnistradAnd of course another Mythic is revealed within twelve hours of me posting this blog: cheers. Anyway, my thoughts on it being an angel were spot on; after all, every block has had at least one mythic angel since the inception of the Mythic Rarity. This one is a little on the odd side though:Posted in: Mockingbird Blog
Angelic Overseer 3WW
Creature - Angel
5/3
Flying
As long as you control a Human, Angelic Overseer has hexproof and is indestructible.
This angel though is one of the most unique angels so far because most angels either protect Creatures/players or are focused on the persecuting evil aspect that angel lore tends to have. This one is different because this angel is empowered by other creatures. So in a sense, humanity empowers her, which I find to be a bizarre take on angels because flavor wise Angels tend to be more in the style of Aegis Angel. But I suppose the change works. This card would obviously only be played in Human decks all across the format board. Possibly could make a splash with Werewolves since their creature line up are humans... most of the time. Otherwise, I'm going to miss Baneslayer Angel. -
Sep 3, 2011Mockingbird posted a message on Pyromancer Ascension in Modern - Do it Again (and Again and Again and Again...)About Peer through Depths, I think Serum Visions would work better because it is another single U cantrip that can help you sort out your deck. And Peer through Depths can be inconvenient if you didn't open with Pyromancer Ascension, and you cast a T2 Peer through the Depths and have to send the Pyromancer Ascension(s) in your top 5 to the bottom of your deck. But ultimately, why play eight cantrips when you can play twelve?Posted in: Mshnik Blog
The other thing is I think you should have at least one more Grapeshot main board (maybe go down to three Lightning Bolts?) because it makes digging it up the win condition easier and gives you another chance to combo off should you fail the first time by some fluke. -
Aug 25, 2011Mockingbird posted a message on Tempered Steel/Steel AggroOne thing you can do to spice up the mana base is play Marsh Flats. But what I don't see though is why are you running any Swamps. Vault Skirge is the only card that relates to black that I see and doesn't even need black. You could go mono-white and have room for Tectonic Edge[/Quote], Contested War Zone, or even Dread Statuary.Posted in: Otaku Se7eN Blog

That’s a solid plan, but I don’t see that as anything unmanageable. Esper doesn’t care because they have the cards to recover from any kind of blowout Nissa can pulls sans Nexus of Fate lock, and mono red just kills her or the player.
The real telling of Nissa’s power though as good but not broken is opening the scope to formats outside Standard. Narset, Parter of Veils and Teferi, Time Raveler have both had major impacts on every format, including vintage and commander variety formats.
Nissa doesn’t do what makes them so good in every format, she doesn’t disrupt while building card advantage. Nissa ramps and makes beaters. That just makes her a green card, not overwhelming.
Honestly if her ramp becomes such a problem, I’d just say ban the thing she’s ramping into. She’s fine.
Also, this is not a primer, at least not yet, because I've just picked up the deck, and it's one of my first Legacy Storms decks I'm playing... ever. So I've got a lot to learn before this is more than a discussion thread.
Here's the deck that's been going around that I've been trying.
4 Chrome Mox
4 Lion's Eye Diamond
4 Lotus Petal
Creatures - 2
2 Monastery Mentor
Instants - 11
4 Brainstorm
4 Dark Ritual
3 Entomb
Lands - 13
4 Polluted Delta
4 Scalding Tarn
2 Island
1 Swamp
1 Tundra
1 Underground Sea
4 Narset, Parter of Veils
Sorceries - 18
2 Cabal Therapy
4 Ponder
2 Preordain
2 Tendrils of Agony
4 Echo of Eons
4 Thoughtseize
4 Defense Grid
1 Chain of Vapor
1 Darkblast
3 Surgical Extraction
3 Echoing Truth
2 Price of Betrayal
1 Massacre
The basics of the deck though is pretty straightforward. Disrupt the opponent with black discard, then Storm off, but with Flashing back Echo of Eons off of Lion's Eye Diamond instead of Ad Nauseam or Griselbrand. Narset, Parter of Veils is to break the symmetry of Echo of Eons and to dig for more cards to cast, Monastery Monk is so that we can keep the deck in Esper while serving as a form of Empty the Warrens. Everything else is pretty much generating mana, digging for cards to Storm, or Tendrils of Agony.
So far, I like the deck and hope that discussion is beneficial.
Because Lion's Eye Diamond requires to be activated as an instant, does that mean that if I were activate it and discard my hand to flashback Echo of Eons, does the stack pass priority between tapping the Diamond and casting the card, thereby giving my opponent an opportunity to exile the card I want to cast with Scavenging Ooze?
My musings: I suspect that Leyline of the Void to pick up visibility as I saw the deck just outpace double Relic of Progenitus in a match. The deck also struggles against Chalice on one, so I suspect that Chalice to at the least not go anywhere; it could pick up more visibility as well.
As for the deck itself, I wouldn't be surprised if thanks to how Convoke and Delve are worded that they pay for card costs, if Bridgevine starts picking up Trinisphere because of how surprising much of the deck can ignore Trinisphere altogether. Casting a Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis for 0 mana and then having a judge have to explain "why, yes that indeed works", seems like a fun way to win a game postboard.
As someone that has played their fair share of both formats, Legacy is not slower than Modern. The only way you get to a long game in either format is if you build your deck to kneecap their decks. Coincidentally in both formats, Kess fits into those decks that want to play cards that throw your opponent off tempo. Does that mean that she's going to auto include in control decks? Good question, but I would not be that dismissive.
P.S. If this is objectively true that Modern is faster than Legacy, it's going to be the cruelest of ironies because one of the criteria for the modern banlist since the outset of the format has been, "What cards end games before turn 3?"
Does this work or did the player in this situation pay 2U + 7 cards that were exiled before the Trinisphere checked?
Card tags added for Trinisphere. -MadMage
I’m a little worried that her restrictions may be a little more convoluted than they initially seem, but the floor is land tutoring at instant speed. The ceiling... I’m not sure.
Also, while not the main focus of the deck, some of the cards we run are worth randomly retracing from time to time.
While I suspect this not to be the case, the art makes me think it’s a fusion from when Emrakul invaded Innistrad, and that the trauma of the fusion caused the spark to ignite, carrying this guy and the tree he just got stuck to far away.
If that’s even remotely close, I’m crossing my fingers that we finally get an Eldrazi that is good but doesn’t break at least one format along the way.
Torpor Orb randomly hoses a lot of good things. Besides humans, it kneecaps Primeval Titan, giving us a chance to not be blown out by Amulet Titan or Titanshift. It also throws off Prized Amalgam and Snapcaster Mages. To be honest though, making sure you don't just die or get outvalued forever to Primeval Titan justifies the wish slot.
I'd pay 2WWUBRG for an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth from my deck to the field at instant speed.
She's kind of hard to judge at the moment though for superfriends because yeah, her restrictions are weird. Her comeback potential though is huge, especially with the static abilities on the WAR planeswalkers. Hypothetically, depending on how we can or can't work around her tutor restrictions will determine whether she's win more or an actual Toolbox commander. A number of our planeswalkers are silver bullets. getting them at will is worth it.
Yeah, I'm not impressed by that for tempo superfriends, which is what the majority of this thread is dedicated to tuning. Something like the combo Superfriends I'm working on with Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God or the Kenrith Siblings superfriends deck combo deck that I've seen on this board may take an interest in this. Otherwise, it runs into the same problem as Jace, Cunning Castaway outside the deck I'm working on him: it's a situational card in a tempo deck. Tempo decks want broader situations cards.
We can Tutor planeswalkers to the field now
Sure she has some weird restrictions, but we can tutor planeswalkers with up to CMC 6 or less to the field now. And that's before adding in other stat modifiers we can play (All the Ajanis just got better).
Oh, we can also tutor anything else with Legendary in the type line, so that also means lands, Oaths (like Oath of Nissa to fix the fact most legendary lands make colorless mana), Pir, The Chain Veil, or even Captain Sisay.
So, I don't know if a legendary tutor in the command zone trumps every other contender, but this does feel like a first. I don't just want to cast as a back-up plan or just when things go wrong. I think this means we struck gold.
Ultimately, it doesn't feel subpar despite my misgivings in the previous paragraph; it feels too narrow for the Sliver style I go for, which is tempo. I think combo oriented sliver decks will take an interest in this because those decks don't care how their slivers get on the battlefield, so long as they end up on the field long enough to win. One aside I could be wrong because I will admit part of this is I've just never liked unearth, so reading "Unearth" is not that exciting on Slivers.
