Jul 7, 2021Posted in: Cube New Card DiscussionQuote from Patrunkenphat7 »There's a massive difference between the equip costs.
Well, they are certainly different but I don't really see any 'massive' difference there.
Empyrial Plate requires to get online.
Hand of Vecna requires either (plus 1-7 life) *or* go get online.
1) How many games will you top-deck this card? A reasonable %, I think we'll agree. (It is a dead draw.)
2) Other side of the coin, how many games will you be at too low a life (or too many cards) to even use this card?
To your question, how do these play patterns compare to Grafted Wargear? Well...
1) Top-deck? THRILLED. No problems whatsoever.
2) Too low a life. LOL, problem likely solved now, LET'S GO.
Now, I don't think this is a fair estimation of actual play patterns. It's WCD and that isn't fair or accurate. But, neither is focusing 100% on its BCD either, which is what a lot of folks seem to be doing.
Testing will bear out the truth. Let us know!
Jul 7, 2021Why is everyone (literally, everyone) comparing this to Grafted Wargear when, stripping it down for a sec, Empyrial Plate seems like a far more accurate comparison in its function and typical play patterns. I don't think that's a very cubeable card but maybe I am wrong.Posted in: Cube New Card Discussion

A secondary deck, maybe?
Yes, really sounds like it will be these 'Dungeon' cards we keep hearing about.
*plenty*overly complex without something like that. Probably not a fan of this but I will wait and see what they are..

I feel without Batterskull, Skullclamp or Kaldra Compleat (I don't run it though) in my deck, she's not really worth it.
Honestly, she's been in my sights for removal for a while now. She just doesn't pull her weight in my environment for the simple fact my cube is too big and not enough quality targets for her to merit inclusion. The equipments seem to do just fine without her in the mix.

Jun 13, 2021Magic will surely survive this. Maybe some of you won't, but, to be clear, Magic will probably survive that too. (Believe it or not, so will you.)Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Anyone complaining these don't belong in Magic is hanging on way too tightly. Anyone complaining these drive Magic to an unaffordable place probably hasn't been playing Magic very long, tbh.
While I respect other folks' viewpoints and personal taste, I am unconvinced these are some horrible thing that simply should not exist.
Jun 4, 2021I'm going to try it out for sure--I do still run Sinkhole and I do run all-snow lands. Several of my non-basics do also make :symc:. The Overload clause means potential Armageddon-type wins so it might be a higher pick in our drafts than Sinkhole was.Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion
I took out actual Armageddon a while ago to make room for other stuff so this also feels like an easy way to sneak that back in.
May 31, 2021Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype DiscussionQuote from HalPessimistPal »Uh? wow! This card does everything. Too good almost.
It's WAY too good. This guy's as pushed as Questing Beast, tbh. About the *only* thing that "balances" him is that he's only 1 toughness and has no evasion. Both of those can be remedied but it takes a bit of work.
Not sure which red 1-drop I'll replace to put this guy in but it probably won't be too hard to figure out. He easily deserves a spot in both my cubes, tbh. My poor wallet but I'm happy to do it--this set it so great. I really do think they designed it for me holy *****. BOTH my cubes are getting a total shot in the arm with this set I'm *deliriously* happy over here.
May 31, 2021What this guy goes is one of my absolutely most favorite thigs to do in a game of Magic, especially in a very high-powered environment like mine--windmill slam-dunk for me without question.Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion

Dec 2, 2017Exactly right. Number Crunch is actually the ONLY card in the entire game our casual group ever talked about banning. Luckily, the offending player(s) got the message and voluntarily stopped running it. Let me be very clear: Gotcha cards are TERRIBLE FOR MULTIPLAYER. Don't do it, you will regret it.Posted in: Articles
Dec 21, 2016I have no personal beef against Rai, but I would like to voice (as strongly as possible) the opposing viewpoint. These are now actually useful once again, unlike how they used to be. We get targeted comments instead of an recurring obsession on providing bland, neutral, and ultimately-meaningless commentary on *every single card*, no matter its significance or relative insignificance. (And most weeks, at least 50% of them were just lazy cut/pastes of the same repeating statuses over and over.)Posted in: Articles
And a lot of the opinions ("Format BOMB, it's got room to grow." or "This card is garbage, it's going down.") were apparently personal opinions anyway, as we would never get any actual analysis or support to back up claims. That seems a bit pointless too.
I found Rai's updates to be a nearly complete waste of time to read. The current, more focused format is much better in my mind. We get the quick hits and not a lot of fluff about cards that don't even matter.
Sorry but that's how I feel. I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings so I kept it under wraps and then the authorship changed, so I dropped it. (Sorry if any of this hurts your feelings, Rai. Really not my intent. I imagine these are hard to do, and no, I probably couldn't do any better myself.)
Feb 10, 2016As for storyline, I think this might be a cool thing: Do a full-on fantasy movie set in a Magic plane. Characters are introduced, crisis erupts, huge battle ensues, ups and downs, all that..Posted in: Articles
Fade to black..
Fade back in to one final, real-world scene in someone's basement. All the heroes (and the villain) are there, talking epic smack, picking up their stuff and shuffling up for the next game. Or packing up for the night and saying something like "See you next time, guys." "Hell yeah, awesome game!!"
Fade to black.. Credits roll.
Feb 10, 2016Any movie about Magic should spend as little time as possible talking about handsize, milling, any of that stuff. Did the D&D movies spend time talking about dice rolls, THAC0, or encumbrance? (Communicate the flavor of a some rule via a quirky funny one-liner aside to the audience? "You wanna do WHAT now?" Sure--that's reasonable, but absolutely nothing beyond something like that.)Posted in: Articles
The movie doesn't need to be a game tutorial. It's supposed to entertain and get people interested in learning more about the game AFTER the movie.
It shouldn't be an opportunity to stroke Magic players egos with endless in-jokes about Magic and R&D and....a bunch of fanservice, more or less. I mean--Magic players are gonna show up in droves no matter what they put in it. This being the case, they should worry about the NON players and make the movie for them (and less for us). I mean--what's a better payoff? A movie that makes us all feel awesome about ourselves for a few days on the forums or a movie that helps inject a BUNCH of new players to help the game go on for (at least) another decade.
Whatever, my 2¢.
