A planeswalker comes into play with a number of loyalty counters on it equal to its loyalty number.
But Doubling Season being a replacement effect, it replaces that with a double.
EDIT:

306.5b A planeswalker is treated as if its text box included, "This permanent enters the battlefield with a number of loyalty counters on it equal to its printed loyalty number." This ability creates a replacement effect (see rule 613.1c).
True, but if you're playing a multi-player game? You don't get another turn of your own to untap that land. You can control one turn only (legendary land).
With the combo I posted, you get your own turn after every turn you take control of. On those turns you double the counters on Sorin Markov repeatedly and control the next opponents turn.
I also like that one though - Like you say, it's a lot faster.
If you want to go infinite on counters, you can chuck in a Training Grounds while your Gilder Bairn is out and equipped.
Yeah, I had that wrong for ages too. Was totally cheating in all my casual games with my friends and didn't even know.
Yeah, DS is great with planeswalkers, no doubt. Pop a Nissa Revane with two DS out and you have a stonk load of Elves out instantly.
You don't get double counters for their abilities. They're a cost, not an effect. (Bummer, I know)

Good point. I like that.

Training Grounds would be mint with Gilder Bairn and Paradise Mantle! Infinite counters!
I have 4 Mycoloth and 3 Vigor in my deck. It's AWESOME. Especially when I have 4 Doubling Season and my Gilder Bairns equipped with Paradise Mantles. It's tough to get out though.
Best I've had was three Mycoloths: a ~200/200, a ~1400/1400 and a ~4500/4500. Good times.
An interesting combo I want to try:
I play all your turns
Mirror Gallery
Dark Depths
Vampire Hexmage
Rite of Replication
Parallel Evolution
I think that's it.
