Finally had some time to give my waveriders some play in both modern and legacy. I'll stick to modern in here.
Overall I've been very pleased. Smugglers copter does give an additional angle. All the good stuff we knew already is great. It fits us just as well or better than it did the standard flash deck, as they played stuff like reflector mage and avacyn, while we have far more etb effects and static powers than that deck ever did.
I'll likely be playing it from here on out till we get more or better merfolk aka something like a blue ember hauler that spell pierces rather than shocks. Or draws a card. I've only played a handful of matches but it definitely feels like it belongs. Right now I'm on 3 copies at the expense of a 29th creature and main board spell pierces. I also regularly run 61 cards.
My sb isn't tuned any differently from most of ours on here. 4 seas claim, 5 counter spell mix of unified will and dispel, 2 relics, 2 tide binders and 2 echo truths. Feels fine so far but if someone has a better configuration let me know.
Fanattic, good reasoning, it wouldnt help much to increase draw power at the cost of silvergill and synergy. Remind me when I've more time to post my list from right after theros was released. Even being a small event, looking back theres no way I should have top8'd that iq. The deck was Sooo Super Fluffy. The core cards Really carry the archetype.
Fanattic, what about going All the way with copter and friends by replacing the two Rejereys with Kira? As a 61st card(for me) Id put the 4th harbinger back in and test a board like this.
2 Tidebinder mage
4 Sea's Claim
2 Dispel
2 Unified Will
2 Echoing Truth
2 Relic of Progenitus
1???
Only differences from my regular list is you are replacing rejerey with copter and kira, overall lowering the curve and increasing draw power. Im looking forward to testing it but rarely have time. Your thoughts?
While I am in agreement of being skeptical of Baral's Expertise due to manacost alone, it Could make more sense in the green splash depending on how far you go. Just got to make the most of the double spell it allows.
We liked how cyclonic rift fit the deck given it used elixer, similar to how uw decks in standard during revelation season would have used it, cheap interaction early, late game or in this case post ramp, boardwipe.
Davemo88, Im still looking for the old list we based my wife's off of. Wizards website and yahoo arent too forgiving. It showed up as a deck that just missed or just made day 2, somewhere about the end of 2013/2014 at either a pro tour or gp.
Using Rites, mines, and belerens it time warped into emrakul the aeons torn, then finished off the opponent.
If I remember it was something like this.
1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
1 Elixir of Imortality
4 Rites of Flourishing
4 Howling Mine
2 Jace Beleren
4 Time Warp
4 Walk the Aeons
3 Temporal Mastery
3 Cryptic Command
4 Remand
2 Mana Leak
3 Gigadrowse
2 Simic Growth Chamber
4 Breeding Pool
4 Hinterland Harbor
3 Flooded Grove
2 Forest
8 Island
1 Minamo, School at Water's Edge
1 Mikokoro, Center of the Sea
With various sb cards including 4 Fog, 2 Moonmist, 1 Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir and others.
Over time she had added Courser of Kruphix and Cyclonic Rift in over various slots but we just loved how it regularly played. Pod wound up being a great matchup locally as it was typically too midrangey to matter much.
Davemo88, is there any chance you could post or link me to your current Rites list? It is still my favorite way to play the archetype ever since the one gp it had a day 2 record years ago.
My wife plays it off and on though we havent updated it in some time. Still pre part tge watervale, we have elixir, jace beleren, courser of kruphix and emrakul aeons torn.
Favorite moments include overloading cyclonic rift vs a boardfull of esper mentor tokens, and against the old kikipod list, her opponent just made infinite resto angels and attacked. She tapped her happy little hinterland harbor and fog'ed him. Between his disbelief and her untaping and warping up to emrakul him in extra turns was just priceless.
Okay, I may still try it at somepoint, but thank you for grounding me back to reality. Feels like it would be a strong turn 2 play after a Vial, but after that it doesnt really fit the curve.
This may come across a tad random as Ive been stuck in nonstop brewer mode due to being unable to play for the past few months, but am wondering....how powerful would smuggler's copter be in the deck if room could be made? A 2-3 of Im thinking. Has anyone worked on this yet?
Wow....and yes I think the math is very close devotion being 7 thanks to the token fanatic puts it to 28, and then warstorm would make 16. You could kill a pod llike that! Holy Hell.
Just for reference...if I had a board state of this artifact, warstorm surge, purphoros, and kiki-jiki, then I cast fanatic of mogis, respond to his trigger with kiki's ability targeting fanatic....what exactly happens?
Basically checking if the new artifact breaks an already powerful move by copying all the moving parts, or just one per etb. Please and thank you!
CoBTyrannon, I say slight to overlook the anxiety issues I cause myself right before an event where I question my choices until I wind up with God knows what in my deck.
As a whole, we all seem to agree that 12 lords, 4 waves, 4 catchers and 4 adepts, alongside 4 vials, 4 seas, and 20 lands is vital to the deck being itself. We also seem to agree that 4 or 5 Interactive spells and 3 to 4 more creatures (either with an etb effect or is Kira) is where we want to be currently.
By slight I mean the biggest change between lists I see often are which 4 spells to use, often a mix of vapor snag, spell pierce, and dismember.
4 harbingers was almost core up until recently where a typically Meta inspired card like tidebinder became more maindeckable.
Even the sideboard to me is becoming almost core.
4 hurkyls recall
4 negate/dispel/unified will/remand/swan song...
2 relics or other gravehate
....then thats where it varies.
Unless affinity is guarenteed not to show, even then some number of recalls tend to only be replaced with echoing truths so.....
Forgive me, but slight, feels right.
If I am overlooking something obvious please show me, just finished yet another 10hr shift at work.

Fanattic, what does the Copter build look like? Tell us more! Hahaha. Cant wait to see it in action.
Check out Barel himself though! http://www.mtgsalvation.com/cards/aether-revolt/28173-baral-chief-of-compliance
While I hate his character in the story, this little legendary goblin electromancer variant should be worth testing at least as a 2 of.
Thank you.

Any other minor or major changes with your list?
Quite the varied list of modern opponents, did you feel anything over//underperformed for you during the day?
