I don't know why, but your list really depresses me when I see it list 5 G planeswalkers and I click the spoiler to find 4 versions of Garruk and Nissa. Not sure what else I expected, of course. Tongue

They could definitely expand the list of planeswalkers further, that's for sure.

My wife made mochiko chicken, couscous, and salad for dinner tonight. It was awesome.

I'm slow cooking five pounds of pork overnight for tomorrow's dinner. Sea salt, ginger, liquid smoke, and 20 hours in the slow cooker on low makes some great kalua pig.

    Wait...

It's not a rationale; there is no rationale for murder, and there will never be a rationale for murder.

What it is a provision for the right to use deadly force and a defence for murder if conditions are met.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't have a law background, so I'm not current on my "legalese." I was just trying to point out the absurdities of explaining why lethal force is an appropriate response to getting hit with popcorn.

Now what is really messed up is guns are permitted in theaters. I don't see this gun thing changing in our lifetime but you would think that there would be a little temporary increase in security after all those theatre shootings. Apparently that isn't the case.

That isn't actually the case with most theaters, as most theater chains in the US have strict no-weapons policies in place.

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/15/justice/florida-movie-theater-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

    From the article:

    Theater security

Theater violence is nothing new. Less than two years ago, an Aurora, Colorado, cineplex was the scene of a shooting massacre that left 12 people dead.

Theater chains had already moved to ban handguns. Cobb Theater, which owns the Grove 16 and more than 120 other theaters, says posters displaying its zero weapons policy are posted on its front doors. Other chains have also stepped up safety measures.

Not that it did a lot of good in this instance.

Its Florida. We let murderers go free here.

Seriously, though, why is it always Florida when you hear about stuff like this? Does the American media just like to focus on Florida news?

I've been drinking a lot of green tea with pomegranate lately. It's good either hot or iced, and is probably much better for you than an energy drink or Red Bull or whatever.

Apparently the attorney for the shooter attempted to use Florida's "Stand your Ground" rationale to deflect the second-degree murder charges. The attorney tried to paint the shooter as the victim for getting hit...with popcorn.

Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general are next to impossible to explain in laymen's terms to others. That (in and of itself) is what will doom it to obscurity.

Also, it was heavily tied to the Silk Road, which probably paints it in a poor light.

I read an interesting story on Vocativ.com about it, basically expounding on why Bitcoin probably will not grow anymore. I can't look it up on my work computer but I'll post it when I get home.

Strangely enough, I think I trust 20th Century Fox with making creative Magic products (be it film or television or what have you) more than anyone that is currently in Creative.

It's funny to me that everyone on these forums prior to the spoilers were saying that the difference between a major god and minor god was merely semantics and they were equal in terms of power (both flavorfully and mechanically).

Yeah, there are very few games that play equally well with two players and with three-plus. They're usually optimized for one or the other.

Actually, I think Magic is one of the best games at player-number flexibility as far as rules and speed-of-play are concerned, but of course it's a TCG so you can't just pull it out at a party. More introverted games, the kinds where you focus on building up your own economy, also tend to do pretty well - I'm talking games like Dominion, Puerto Rico, and Race for the Galaxy. But of course the reason they do well is precisely because your interactions with the other player(s) are limited, so that's a turn-off for a lot of people. (I have heard Seasons strikes the interactivity balance well, but I haven't played it yet.) Cooperative games often offer a very different, but still perfectly effective, experience with two players. Arkham Horror, for instance, gets much more desperate. And a friend of mine just got a game called Castaways that's quite compelling at two. And finally, there are some games that are designed for two sides, which can be either individual players or teams. These tend to run pretty well at all numbers, since the power balance between the sides doesn't change.

I agree, it is difficult to balance the difficulty and gameplay of tabletop games for differing numbers of opponents.

Magic does do it well, but some games tend to drag on, especially when you're playing Commander and everyone is playing combo and tutor effects.

I haven't tried Dominion, Puerto Rico, or Race for the Galaxy. Going to have to give them a try.

I found that Lord of the Rings (the co-op Reiner Knizia version) is borderline impossible with two players, as you're limiting the number of cards you start with for each player less than five. With less cards, you waste turns not advancing the game state just to draw cards or heal corruption. My wife and I keep it at two players, and the few times we've destroyed the One Ring, it was by the skin of our teeth.

Elder Signs is no problem with anywhere from 2 - 5 players, as the daily mythos mechanic occurs at set intervals. I've actually played that game myself, when my wife was out of town. Still enjoyable but obviously lacking the social element.

I also found the magic number for Lords of Waterdeep is between 2 - 4. Any more than that, and you're limited by the number of resources you can get, as your agent pool becomes pretty miniscule.

I got it under pretty much the same circumstances, except we had played it before. My wife enjoyed it, so we got it to play 2 player. It works fine that way - don't sweat it.

Cool. I'm glad to hear that.

I made the same mistake concerning number of players when I bought Settler of Catan. Playing 2 player... definitely not recommended for that one.

7 Wonders is pretty fun - it's a little overcomplicated, but worth playing at least a few times. I got Ticket to Ride for Christmas as well (from my 3 year old son!) and I've had a blast with it so far.

The big draw for me for 7 Wonders (and why I put it on my Christmas list) is that it can be played (supposedly) with 2-7 players. I normally play games with just myself and the wife. However, I just read the instructions for 7 Wonders and feel that I was a bit misled from the description on Amazon.com and Boardgamegeek.com. Yes, you can play with 2 players, but it's primarily designed as a 3+ player game. The 2 player game takes a lot more for extra setup and isn't recommended for your first time playing.

Though, what of Canada? Is it simply impossibly cold there? Is anyone living there? Are there any members who live there who can chime in?

I would think that while what the US mainland just went through was fairly atypical, it didn't seem that out of place for Canada. The news pieces I saw on it basically stated that the "polar vortex" normally originates over Hudson Bay annually every winter but this year migrated south with the epicenter over Lake Superior and northern Minnesota.

  • posted a message on When did you stop playing Magic (and why)?
I started during the Dark, played off and on until Stronghold, and then took a break from about 1999 to 2009. Needless to say, I have significant gaps in my collection.

I'm kinda slowing down on my playing (both MTGO and paper) and have been playing a lot more Pathfinder lately. I may continue to buy a fat pack every release just to stay up on my collection but that will probably be it until I find more friends that play paper Magic.

I got Pandemic, Ticket to Ride, and 7 Wonders for Christmas. Pandemic is awesome, Ticket to Ride is fun as heck, and I haven't busted out 7 Wonders yet, but I'm hoping it's good as well.
