I also think Duels of Planeswalkers 2012 is a great way to teach someone magic. You didn't mention if this person is local. If so, I would be a lot easier to learn MTGO if they get the basics down with real cards first, so they don't have to learn the game and the archaic MTGO interface at the same time.
Thank you vyperesque for your explanation. It has helped alot.
So the only thing I do not understand is, why say add 2 +1/+1 tokens, wich would make for eg a 2/1 card, to a +4/+3 card. Why not just say add a +2/+2 card instead?
Would it be because as you say, the +1/+1 will cancell out the -1/-1 and will there for still be a +1/+1 counter on the 2/1 creature then?
One reason I can think of is because cards with proliferate, such as Contagion Clasp. It will add a +1/+1 counter to the card in your example, instead of a +2/+2 counter.
You should try to resolve the problem through eBay. Go to your purchase history, find the item, then under actions click "more actions" and then "resolve a problem". This way everything is official and you won't get ripped off.
The lack of MTGO on iOS is probably WOTC's most glaring current failure to market. The quality of the sets is solid these days and organized play weathered the upheaval and is entering a decent state of affairs, but there are eight figures left of the decimal in the number of iOS devices sold MONTHLY and right now WOTC gets ZERO revenue from that.
Agreed. However, MTGO might be too robust as an app, but, at the very least they should have an app that is something like Duels of the Planeswalkers.
If you combine it with a free dropbox account it is even better. I can drop a deck list on my computer into a folder in dropbox and the deck will be available in decked builder on my iphone. No need to use itunes. Very convenient.
For life management I like MTG Counter. It has a very simple interface for tracking life and poison for 2 people. SCG Mobile and iMTG are good if you need more features (like Commander).
The dealer has a good rep on Amazon, but there is a catch: as others pointed out, the shipping costs are where the prices are jacked up. As for mapping, the packs were individually sealed, so I don't imagine they could be mapped.
Even still, the foil packs (which sold for 11.99 at release) are still at a great price after shipping: 10 premium foil packs for $56 USD after shipping.
The Future Sight packs aren't so hot; at best they come out to be about the price of a current set, and that's not including the possibility they've been mapped.
I've decided to go ahead and gamble on the foil premiums; I'll update when they come in.
Amazon also has a booster box (12 packs) for $55 with free shipping:
Ok, I am very new to MTG and I have a question about lands that is confusing me. If someone is using a mono color deck, lets say red in this example, why would they put a card in like Scalding Tarn when they can just put another mountain in its place and not pay the one life. I have seen these types of cards used frequently on mono colored decks but I don't understand why.

Why is Marsh Flats used in the above deck?
I'm in - MTGO user name ArmiaKrajowa

Apparently it was made by Magic tournament players.

It doesn't have much for charts but the interface is very clean. You can also import multiple cards at once into a deck.
