You are incorrect. The Ur-golems were mentioned in the novels... in fact one showed up in the books. Bosh, Iron golem is an Ur-golem.

The Ur-golems were created by Memnarch in order to combat the Mycosynth. They failed. Memnarch dismantled them. The only known surviver was Bosh, who sunk into the Dross and so wasn't around when Memnarch destroyed his race.

    * The Ur-golems weren't around at the start of Mirrodin, they were created by Memnarch to combat the Oil. From the flavor texts we know that they must have been around before Memnarch rennovated Mirrodin's surface. We also know they must have been destroyed after the Dross was complete. So they must have been around for a very long time.

Memnarch must have told them of Mirrodin's past, which is where the four towers come from, though the Ur-golems weren't around to see Mirrodin's creation. (nor was Memnarch by the way)

Could you please find me where in the novels it mentioned this? I don't remember it. But I hope you're right. Smile

These were my four favorite flavor texts from Mirrodin, because there was something mysterious, tragic, and ultimately beautiful about them. I hate the fact that they could have been retconned....

Maybe I should shoot Doug Beyer a question.

I'm misremembering something then. My bad. I could have sworn that there is some kind of retcon involving this flavor text, though.

Now I'm not going to be able to rest my mind untill I know for sure. X[ You have any idea at all where you heard this?

I know Barrack Hussein Obama is a Christian, yet 18% of Americans believe he's a Muslim. I'm supposed to be surprised by this?

And then there's that annoyingly ignorant percentage that believe that Muslim = terrorist.

    Hey everyone --

I'm new to the forums, but I've been playing Magic since Odyssey, which was like, about half my lifetime ago.

I've only ever played casually with local friends, so my competency at MTG is somewhat limited, I guess. Wink But now that I'm going to college and will be in a bigger city, I'll have access to FNM and people who are actually good at this game. I definitely have room for improvement.

In addition to the cards, I've always been a huge fan of Magic's flavor and storyline. My favorite block was Kamigawa, because I love the setting (I'm obsessed with Asian cultures), and as far as flavor goes, it was top-notch. I'm unusual in that I judge a block almost completely by its story/flavor/setting, and not by its power in relation to other sets (though that's not to say I don't acknowledge such aspects). I also tend to judge individual sets by the quality of their Black cards. :p

My favorite color is Black, and my favorite two-color combination is BU.

The race of Ur-Golems on Mirrodin was mentioned in the flavor texts of the four "Tower" cards in Mirrodin, and on the Card Ur-Golem's Eye. The flavor text of Tower of Murmurs suggests that not ALL the Ur-Golems are extinct, and since they are presumably native to Mirrodin (and therefor unaffected by the soul traps), they SHOULD still be on the plane.

But what I want to know is... why were they never mentioned anywhere else? Something so significant to the history of Mirrodin should at least have been mentioned in the books, and yet the novels not only ignore them, but seem to contradict their existence (With the implication that Memnarch was the only being on Mirrodin at the time of Karn's departure, though granted, I don't think this was ever stated explicitly.)

Here's hoping that SOM will make use of this to work out the inconsitencies....

Do you think this will have any bearing on the story, or will the Ur-Golems just remain an unsolved mystery of the continuity?

Planeswalkers--even the best of them-- have often shown traces of corruption.

Urza--though he's been dead since 2001--was the world's salvation, the ultimate opponent of Yawgmoth. He was Magic's "Hero" for a while. But even then, he's been portrayed as cold, arrogant, and often manipulative. Many "good" characters hated him.

Karn seems, to me, the Planeswalker with the least capacity for evil.

    As of yet.
