Why would you lose respect for an artist just because his new album isn't up to your standards? Granted that this album isn't his best (Late Registration is his best, in my opinion), but if you're not a Kanye fan, then you should've just skipped it entirely.
I'm not a Kanye fan in the slightest (Indifferent really), but what's a valid reason to not even listening to the album? I don't see anything wrong with at least giving it a look and seeing if you'll like it. Like I did.
Honestly though, I wasn't diggin it that much. Kanye is not bad at what he does, but his music doesn't hit me like Lupe Fiasco, Eminem or Aesop Rock.
A flawed list, IMO, though surprisingly good for Time.
I don't agree much with the list, but I do like the fact that Alan Wake will get more exposure for simply being there. I don't know a single person other than my brother or myself who have played it.
If you like underground rap (or dislike mainstream rap) you'd do well to give this guy a listen. He's from my home state of Maryland. He's one of the sickest and freshest rappers I've ever heard. His beats and production are more along the lines of hard electronica than a generic rap beat.
He are some youtube videos of his music. Be ready for some harsh language, this is rap after all: Firebox Contra (Official Video) Ink
1. Arcturus -Demon Painter Best metal vocalist there is, IMO. ICS Vortexes vocal range is incredible.
I'd actually argue that Garm, Arcturus' previous vocalist, is way better. I think a better case would have been ICS' work in Borknagar (Which I think is better than when he was with Arcturus), but Garm overshadows him there as well. Regardless of who's better, there's a lot worse you can do than ICS Vortex.
2. Amon Amarth- Cry of the Blackbirds. This is one band that just gets better and better with every album release. I think they are the pinnacle of how Melodic Death Metal should sound. The mix of the lead guitar melodies mixed with the super fast paced rhythm guitar make for an unforgettable song that just gets stuck in your head. Johan Hegg has the perfect metal voice and Fredrik Andersson makes stupidly hard drumming look like a 4 year old can do it. He just effortlessly plays super fast rhythms. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxTzQ3nRtas
Amon Amarth's two most recent releases have been good, yes, but they've yet to top their 1998 debut album, Once Sent From the Golden Hall. Victorious March overshadows any song they've put out since.
3. Metallica- Master of Puppets. Do I really need an explanation as to why this makes it on the list? This might be the metal anthem. Every metalhead and even a lot of people who don't like metal in general know that when Master of Puppets comes on, it's time to rock out. Everything about this song is perfect. The awesome riffs, kick ass lyrics, and a wicked ass solo make this song easily in the top 3. OBEY YOUR MASTER! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z-hEyVQDRA
I like the inclusion of this, but MoP was released long before the year 2000. Just sayin.
5. Septic Flesh- Virtues of the Beast. It is going to be very hard to find a band that has a more epic sound than Septic Flesh. Septic Flesh ditches the stereotype "metal must be fast and aggressive or it's not metal" for a much slower, deeper, and melodic sound. They use Gothic style choirs, and use the mighty vocal growl of Sotiris V. to complete the sound. Dark lyrics just round out the entire package. Septic Flesh goes to show that you don't need to be utterly fast and brutal to make great metal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVt7Rl_LTLc
Good choice. I like Septic Flesh a lot, and while my list likely wont include them, if I did it would likely be this track.
7. In Flames- Embody the Invisible. In Flames was one of the proprietors of Swedish Death Metal (more widely known as Melodic Death Metal). The colony album is when they started to hit the peak of their career and in my opinion have not yet started to descend from that peak yet. Embody the Invisible is everything awesome about a Melodeath song, sweet riffs, awesome lyrics and vocals, and lots and lots of melody. Not to mention a pretty sweet melody from 1:40-2:10. Best Melodic riff in metal IMO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi1-vpnfUQ0
I might be being a little nitpicky, but I've always seen a vast difference between Swedish death metal and melodic death metal. Swedish DM is bands like Entombed, Grave, Unleashed, Nihilist, At the Gates first two, and Dismember. Anyone else confirm/deny?
Arch Enemy- Enemy Within. Enemy Within is Angela Gossow's debut track with the band and it proves how well she fits the bands sound. She is aggressive and abrasive which is just what Arch Enemy needed. The riffs are intense and the intro is the best intro in Swedish Death Metal that I have ever heard. Daniel Erlandsson really shows that he can trump his brother when it comes to kicking ass, and the Amott duo kick so much ass that you'll probably go blind. Awesome melody mixed with awesome vocals mixed with awesome rhythms mixed with awesome solos makes for one kick ass song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrSqeS8Ya-E
One of the only worthwhile tracks Arch Enemy has done since Angela joined them, but everything they've done with her pales in comparison to their earlier material. Also a melodic death metal band.
This kinda makes me want to break out all of my dusty Satyricon CD's and re-upload them to my computer. I always forget that I own them.
Then again, as far as I remember K.I.N.G. was the only good song on that entire album, if not one of the only good songs in their entire discography :/
Satyricon were only worthwhile from 1993 to 1996. Everything they've done since then has ranged from mediocre to garbage.
I have not. Nor was I interested until I read your summary of the content within. It's no secret that I am a huge metalhead, but I am also a huge rap/hip-hop fan interested both in mainstream artists who are talented and underground artists.
I don't really care much for the pitchfork rating of the album, but your description of the albums content has piqued my interest. Not really much of a Kanye hater (Not a fan either), but I do enjoy when people poke fun at him. Glad to hear he's got a fiery attitude in response.
The only thing I'm worried about is said album being too focused on the controversy and not the skill. Is this an issue?
Other than that I'm glad I actually can recognize most of the music you put on your list. It feels like this thread and the sub-forum Music has been taken over by mostly metal loving folk. I'm not saying that metal is bad, it's just that when a new discussion like this comes up, it starts becoming an argument about which metal albums are better. I wish there was more variety. Maybe I just want to find another person on this forum that has a similar taste in music. Or maybe I just want to see this sub-forum to be dominated by a different group of people other than metal loving folk.
Honestly, the past few threads here in the music forum have been pretty awful. It's why I leave most of my discussion to the thread that's intended for metal discussion..because I like to discuss metal.
Anyways, it seems that many of the other threads about other topics have not have had NEARLY the longevity of the metal thread, which is now a sticky hell yeah. Is it truly because those genres aren't as interesting as metal? I'd like to think not. I like Hip-hop a good deal, but that thread didn't go anywhere other than have a handful of folks post what they like...and then peace out.
Also, the issue also seems to stem from a few posters who feel the extreme need to argue about metal as much as possible...in every thread BUT the metal one. No, I'm not talking about TheButt, he actually posts there. Posters like Pervythemilkman and Sharkhan The Mongoloid.
Ok...this was hella off topic, but I think it's a valid observation.
Anyways, I'll post my list for 10 best albums since Jan 1st, 2000:
1) Insomnium - Above the Weeping World - Melodic Death Metal - 2006 This is my favorite album ever made, hands down. I truly feel that this is the most perfect a melodic death metal album has ever been crafted. The lyrics are incredible, dealing with loss, love, mourning and loneliness. They blend perfectly with the instruments themselves, including phenomenal use of acoustic atmospheric parts, which create intense imagery of being alone in the woods for a stroll in the middle of the night. Niilo's vocals can't go without mention either - the conviction with which he growls makes you honestly believe every lyric penned is absolutely from the heart.
2) Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini - Progressive/Black Metal - 2010 This one is awfully fresh. However, I seriously doubt it would be much of a stretch to say that this is the greatest album Enslaved have constructed yet, and even less far fetched to say it's at least the best since they released Mardraum and started into incorporating progressive elements. The biggest draw of this album is the fact that upon listening to the album, you can tell they've incorporated everything they used in their previous albums from song to song, and yet have managed to make it better. In almost every way. I could go on forever, I guess. Last thing - the album has no two tracks that are quite alike, and yet it flows beautifully.
3) God is An Astronaut - All is Violent, All is Bright - Post-rock - 2005 Holy crap, it's not a metal album! This band is nothing short of incredible. This music is so engaging, if I am listening to it chances are I am doing that and that only - the music has transported me to another world. Many albums can do said act, examples are all over my post, but GIAA have some unique otherworldly aspect to it. Without being too over the top, it's like being in tune with the universe. And this is their best album.
4) Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain - Progressive Metal - 2006 Well, 2006 was a good year for me. I know Agalloch release what many consider to be their magnum opus in 2002 with The Mantle, but as important me as both albums are, this one takes the cake. This one almost sounds like a companion piece to Katatonia's Brave Murder Day, another fantastic album. It's not a black metal, folk, post-rock, or doom metal album at all - but it includes elements of all these genres incredibly well. The track Falling Snow has been one of my all time favorite songs for a long time now, and each of the other tracks are amazing in their own right.
5) Edge of Sanity - Crimson II - Melodic Death Metal - 2003 Edge of Sanity's 1996 album Crimson, which began the story, is a better album than this one. That said, this one is almost just as incredible. It's one long 43 minute track, divided into 9 chapters which flow into each other (Because it's one track, like I said silly). Not much else to say here (Since I already said it's ☺☺☺☺ing incredible), other than Dan Swano is an incredible musician and the vocals on this album are killer.
6) Deathspell Omega - Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice - Black Metal - 2004 Okay, so yeah, Enslaved are above these guys on my list. However, this might be THE BEST BLACK METAL ALBUM EVER MADE. Maybe. Enough said.
7) Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With the Stars - Black Metal - 2009 These guys are French, Deathspell Omega are French, and Alcest, who are pretty much guaranteed to be below this album somewhere on here, are also French. Must be something in their water, but the French have made 3 out of my 10 most favorite albums since the year 2000 began. Anyone who listens to Blut Aus Nord may place The Work Which Transforms God on such a list instead, but this one resonates with me more. For this band to so skillfully combine intense black metal with post-rock in the way it's performed here is incredible. I can be in awe at the dissonance one moment to having a chill run down my spine to the next. Awesome.
8) Alcest - Ecailles De Lune - Post-rock/Shoegaze/Black Metal - 2010 From one French BM band that uses post-rock to another. When done right, this is some of the best music I've ever heard. Neige has crafted quite the album with this one, surpassing his first effort with a vengeance (And by that I mean some screams). More chills down the spine. Incredible vocals too. Enough said.
9) Vader - Litany - Death Metal - 2000
I finally fit a death metal album on here. Want me to say something about it? It's Vader, it's death metal, it ☺☺☺☺ing rules. End. (What? it's after 5am here...)
10) Destroyer 666 - Cold Steel... For An Iron Age - Black/Death/Thrash Metal - 2002 I swear, if you were to gash open any of the members of this band, they would no doubt bleed metal. If you like metal, you owe it to yourself to check these guys out. They're fast, heavy and triumphant. Hard to take the lyrics that seriously, but lines like "Spare none the blade / Rape the world" are pretty damn entertaining.
I have way too many albums to put here and not enough slots. I did my best with ten...seriously, I am tired and trying to list my honorable mentions for such a list would probably double the size of this post. And include Eminem.
Can't really find anything new (new to me) I like lately. I listen to a mixture of older metal (metallica, black sabbath), newer alternative rock (tool), techno/rave/eloctronic (i don't really know the difference, and deadmau5 and Metronomy are examples), led zeppelin, SOAD on occasion, and video game music (Cave Story, FFT, Pokemon). Oh yea, I like a few songs by MGMT, too. I even listen to classical sometimes.
I tend to prefer instrumentals, but I'm open to anything.
Help me out.
Since you prefer instrumentals, post-rock:
God is an Astronaut
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Red Sparowes
Jakob
65daysofstatic
A Silver Mt. Zion
Explosions in the Sky
If These Trees Could Speak
Russian Circles
This Will Destroy You
Since you like Black Sabbath:
Candlemass
Reverend Bizarre
Since you like electronic:
Calyx
Calyx and Teebee
Pendulum
Noisia
Evol Intent
Wolfgang Gartner
Black Sun Empire
Someone mention Tool?:
Mastodon
Neurosis
Kylesa
Isis
You may also like tracks by A Perfect Circle, Katatonia, Anathema, and Paradise Lost.
I am not a punk listener. I know almost nothing about punk. I cannot judge punk well.
However, I recently stumbled upon the latest album by a hardcore band called Nails.
The album is called Unsilent Death, here is what it sounds like:
It sounds like the band Entombed hopped on the Delorean and went back in time to 1990 when they recorded their magnum opus, Left Hand Path, did a metric ☺☺☺☺ ton of coke, stole an oil tanker truck, smashed it into a church, and then proceeded to record the album while screaming at the pastor as the whole place burned down. In 14 minutes.
TL;DR - It's ☺☺☺☺ing awesome. It's fast as hell, heavy as a cruise ship and loud as a jet aircraft.
It's also the perfect album to listen to after reading the recent god awful threads here in the music section.
Also that song he did with Lil Wayne was abysmally horrible.
I actually don't mind Lil Wayne that much (Seriously, if you get down to the technical aspects, he's pretty boss), but that song really suffers from god-awful production. The verses in it are just SICK though, one of my favorites from Eminem.
Honestly, Eminem is at the top of his game right now when it comes to writing verses, as he can do in one line what many rappers can't even imagine doing, ever. It's the horrible production on his latest that really brings it down. Still some great songs on there - Such as: Almost Famous, 25 to Life, Love the Way You Lie.
Go Go Gadget flow may not be my favorite of Lupe's, but it's up there. Hell, anything he's put out is good. Hip-Hop Saved My Life really puts a shiver down my spine though - So much emotion flows from that track.
I'm a moderate fan of Hip-Hop. I really only enjoy a select few genres more, which would be Metal, Post-Rock and Drum n' Bass.
My favorite artists are Nas, Eminem, Cubbiebear, DZK, Lupe Fiasco, Aesop Rock, Wu-tang Clan, and Jedi Mind Tricks.
I on occasion listen to Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Bone Thugs n' Harmony, Cypress Hill and Immortal Technique.
Favorite songs?
Lupe Fiasco - Hip-Hop Saved My Life
Eminem - Sing For the Moment
Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
Nas - Ain't Hard to Tell
Immortal Technique - Dance With the Devil

Because Meshuggah are ☺☺☺☺ing terrible.
This is my favorite Dark Tranquillity album as well, and a great song. However, this is pre-2000. It was released in 99.
There's a difference between this century and the last one. I also realize the thread title and content are confusing.
Amon Amarth's two most recent releases have been good, yes, but they've yet to top their 1998 debut album, Once Sent From the Golden Hall. Victorious March overshadows any song they've put out since.

Nemesis Divina is anything BUT lackluster. This statement is only true for material released afterward.

I cannot believe I forgot to mention him in my post. I'll just blame it on the fact I hadn't been listening to much of my power metal albums recently.
Tony Kakko and A.A. Nemtheanga are two others I forgot.
I actually don't mind Lil Wayne that much (Seriously, if you get down to the technical aspects, he's pretty boss), but that song really suffers from god-awful production. The verses in it are just SICK though, one of my favorites from Eminem.
