How about Undead Warchief? The +2/+1 bonus is crazy with a bunch of cheap zombies out.

Ahh sorry. Thought I was right about that. I thought the clause in the card about enchant creature you control only mattered when casting the spell. I didn't realize it would fall off like that. Guess it always help to look at gatherer first when making sure you are playing a card right http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=398641.

Yep this works as you had intented. After you cast Press Into Service the creature is under your control and a legal target for Murder Investigation. Even after you lose control of the creature at the end of the turn you still control the aura enchanting it. It doesn't matter who controls the creature when it dies you will get all of the tokens either way. If Murder Investigation was worded differently such as "When enchanted creature dies, it's owner put X tokens" then it would be different but the lack of any such specifics would indicate that only the controller of the card gets the tokens.

    Indestructible.
As long as your devotion to black, green and blue is less than eight, Hobek isn't a creature.
    Creatures you control have deathtouch.
XGUB: Target creature gets +X/-X until end of turn.

  • posted a message on How does OGW fare in comparison to BFZ?
    Quote from Yatsufusa »
OGW is a pretty average set in my opinion, but it really screams out a lot of wasted potential (that was mainly wasted by BFZ preceding it), seeing that we won't be getting much of these mechanics after OGW soon.

I don't actually fault the set's "power-downs" for Shock and Rampant Growth because Devoid has implications when it comes to removal in particular and I suspect they intentionally powered-down traditional ramp in an Eldrazi-focused set.

OGW's biggest mistake is introducing too many "new" mechanics and not retaining enough of BFZ's mechanics - now that the blocks consists of two sets, the two sets need to share mechanical consistency in order to maintain a "Identity". Pretty much the main reason BFZ and OGW have the same identity is simply from the "Eldrazi" (+ Devoid) and "Ally" subtypes now, mechanically, they are almost from two different blocks.

I know the 2-Set Block Paradigm is new, but they need to realize they can't do drastic sweeping changes mechanically like they did with Rise of the Eldrazi, Avacyn Restored, nor can they even do it less drastically like with New Phyrexia and Dragons of Tarkir, the second set that links the first and third set's differences isn't there anymore, and the few mechanics brought over to OGW from BFZ cannot hold that line. (A quick scan through the spoiler shows pretty much only the 2 Elemental Creatures in RG have landfall, which literally makes Devoid the only "mechanic" that is left over and it is more of a "Colorless Indicator" than a "Mechanic" play-wise.)

Red is going to love having more options to deal with pesky things like Kor Firewalker, Burrenton Forge-Tender or Etched Champion. Kozilek's Return is amazing to have as a cheap colorless sweeper for older formats especially.

If they would have made it "If you paid C do this" instead of paying in addition the ability would have been much better. A 3/3 Flash for 3 ain't bad still. Doubt it will see any constucted play if Bounding Krasis and Wolfir Avenger didn't.

I think she is deceptively powerful. Her mana cost makes it easy to have her out on turn 2 in modern with a mana dork or something which is one big appeal. Otherwise she reminds me of Elspeth, Knight-Errant. The best part about that card is she affects the board and goes up 1 so it is awesome to have something comparable on a 3 mana planeswalker.

  • posted a message on Friend got swindled. How much would you pay?
Sure, seller did great. Doesn't mean someone got swindled. If seller misled the buyer then sure, but if they just asked a ridiculously high price and someone was dumb enough to pay it then that is on the buyer.

The seller took advantage of someone's ignorance in order to get a highly inflated price. Whether that person is naive or not it still counts as swindling in my opinion, even if it is not technically stealing. You should always research stuff before you buy these days but I get the feeling that the seller must have misrepresented what they were selling in order to get that high price. Although I have never been swindled quite like that I remember trading away a couple dual lands as a kid because the person lied about their value and I've always felt pretty cheated especially when looking at the price they demand these days. That guy was definitely a swindler IMO.

  • posted a message on When do you declare target when casting a clone?
Good question. There are certain cards that don't require a target and simply ask you to choose a card on the battlefield. The neat part about this is that you can copy creatures that you couldn't target in the first place such as creatures that have hexproof like Troll Ascetic. When your opponent casts Clone he/she doesn't choose which creature to copy until the spell has resolved and the creature actually enters the battlefield which gives you a chance to sacrifice your Acidic Slime before your opponent has the chance to choose it as the creature they want to copy. Whenever a player plays a spell or ability it goes on the stack and you are passed priority so that is your window to play other spells or abilities before your opponent can choose which creature to copy. Once you pass back priority to the person playing the spell their spell resolves and the creature is put onto the battlefield which then involves making the choice of which creature to copy. If you hadn't already sacrificed your slime by then he will probably copy it and destroy your Phyrexian Altar or something bad. If there are no other creatures on the battlefield when it resolves Clone won't have any creatures to copy and will enter the battlefield as a 0/0 and instantly die.

I like the idea of what your going for here but making a 2-tribe deck back when Lorwyn was out never worked very well so I would have doubts about making cards that require 2 other tribes. That being said none of the cards that play with other tribes in Lorwyn were any good so if you bumped up the rewards for running more than 1 tribe I could see it being decent enough. Making a player run 3 tribes for a card to be good seems like it would be far too inconsistent though. You might be able to do it by giving creatures more creature types so you fulfill the requirements by having a creature with "Warrior Knight" for instance but it sounds like that would get crazy to keep track of all the creature types though.

  • posted a message on Why does WotC keep using bad artists?
Sure WotC might be paying the most for artists in the fantasy market right now Dr Worm and be the golden goose. Go ask Jesper Myrfors how it was back in 94 though. They were getting paid far more back then then they are now and the game is several times larger now than it was back then. Until the WotC CEO Peter Adkison decided no more royalties and went for what most CEOs go for nowadays/more money in their own pocket than the people who do the real work. WotC is a pathetic company if you look at it closely. It's almost a shame MTG is so popular or in other words no matter how badly run WotC is as a company it's not like it means anything because they still get millions in profits annually. Artists are underpaid virtually everywhere. The grossest irony in this is that when an artist dies their art goes up in value dramatically but money means nothing to the deceased.

I miss old magic artwork a great deal. When I first started playing the game around 7th ed. and onslaught I loved the art a great deal. Now I look at current art and just sigh.

I miss Quinton Hoover a lot may he rest in peace. Good to know some of his original sketches are in good hands. Vesuvan doppelganger is one of the finest pieces of magic art ever made with ease. The funny side was that he got paid $50 for the original piece because all alpha artwork was commissioned at that price as WotC was a very poor company at the time of course having not made a big splash yet.

People constantly misjudge artwork. If you look at the full artwork in its original size it is often far more beautiful than it appears on the card. You can only put so much detail into a little square on a piece of cardboard.

That sucks didn't know he passed away. I don't think there was ever a bluer card than Vesuvan Doppelganger definitely my favorite piece of magic art. I loved his use of bold lines and bright colors. He had kind of more of a comic book looking style but his pieces really stood out among the old cards. The art for Preacher and Archangel was really top notch too.

    Quote from Jhyrryl »
I personally think that caring about the relative "quality" of sets is a little silly, especially before people have had the chance to play it. The only meaningful thing that should be judged is the fun factor of playing the set in Limited, which can't be evaluated prior to actually playing. Eternal formats, are only ever going to care about a small sliver of the cards in a new set, if any. Modern will care about a few more cards, particularly reprints of staples. And even Standard only cares about a fraction of the cards in a set, a fraction that shifts over time.

Do people think the top competitive players look at the set and think things like, "They expect me to replace Hero's Downfall with Ruinous Path? Well they suck!" Because I doubt it...they're looking at the whole picture and having fun while figuring out what's going to be their next winning deck.

I'm sort of glad they changed the Hero's Downfall effect to sorcery. Having an EOT answer for planeswalkers was a big tempo play when they are only getting a +1 out of the deal. We'll have to turn to Ultimate Price to instant speed answer creatures in black now. I will miss Lightning Strike but we still have cards like Fiery Impulse.

I always thought Pin to the earth was a decent card for a mono blue deck but I think Singing Bell Strike is still better than Tightening Coils though.
I always thought Singing Bell Strike was booty in Khans limited. Getting to 6 mana is pretty easy. Plus, there isn't a whole lot of early stuff you want to hold back with it in that format.

Sorry I meant it could be decent in type 2. It's a good card for mono-blue to stop early aggressors. I thought it was decent in limited still. It won't stop there bombs late game yes but there are a lot of 2 mana cards that don't in limited such as Defeat.

Also, I forgot that Innistrad came after Scars lol.

Innistrad block would be like a 3.5 probably.
