You know...I would actually love to see the numbers for these formats. Wish WOTC was more transparent with that.
Excluding modern, I would actually think that the number of players for the other eternal formats is actually relatively small. And the majority of these players already play paper magic anyways. No one can complain about the price entry of pauper you know.
I don't think WOTC cares at all whatsoever about Vintage or Legacy. These are not formats it supports (or they are on life support). It's a healthy community that organizes their own tournaments.
Additionally, WotC doesn't see a penny from the secondary market and thus, have even less reason to support it - let's not forget that these are NOT the people that are putting money into the game anyways.
From a purely business perspective, WotC has all the reasons to continue to focus on both e-sports via arena and standard. That's their cash cow.
Porting older formats might be in the plans only because it will allow them to take in even more money for all the wild cards you'll need to put together to get a deck. The economy of mtga might actually have to shift in order to support these formats.
I've had this opinion for a while now, but I think WotC absolutely wants to kill paper magic. Mtga is way more profitable for them. And the logistics, don't get me started.
I predict that paper magic is no longer supported within 10 years, based on how things are moving currently.
MTGA will move to mobile and you'll get "fire gatherings" like hearthstone to play in.
Magic is getting turned into a video game. The end of days of the TCG are near us my fellow friends.

These cards are all over the place man...i wonder if there's any grounds to the speculation that this set is to front line a new format. Cuz otherwise, some of these reprints are bizarre.

Wonder if Gemstone Caverns will be in now!

I have a worse scenario than this.
Mine is where every pack has an EV of 8-10$ (average) and it's easy to break even+ on any box. The set is filled with modern/legacy staples. So what happens? The limited print run causes the packs to rise to 25$ each and the boxes well over 500$.
I thin it's basically impossible to have this sort of thing work out positively for anybody. In a way, i'm kind of glad they are shelving these. it causes so much brouhaha in the community every single time.
I'm sure there are a lot of standard environments where many of these cards could see a reprint. This will rest on the balance team, who seems to be doing an amazing job (Tom Ross, Mike & co). If that keeps it up, I wouldn't be worried about introducing something like Snap Caster again. It didn't break standard the first time, it won't break it again.

Clearly on a war path to...cleaning up the yard.

I played UB turns for a while and had the most success with that version (Collective Brutality and Fatal push being key). Additionally, now that Leyline of the void is super relevant for this deck, UB seems to be the correct path (since interacting before your turn on the draw seems to be key these days). What happened to that version?
I think this is the kind of deck that can really benefit from playing Baral. Combined with Remands, it allows you to cycle through the cards you need faster. Having the ability to reduce your spells by 1 is essentially getting faster by a whole turn.

These cards do not beat KCI.
Splashing for white for Stony silence and RIP does.
