Additionally, I'm not sure why it's an issue to express an opinion to what appears to be the popular opinion? I provide reasons why i think this card is bad and what to be shown scenarios (applicable ones) where it is good and no one has done this. No one has shown me an existing deck that wants to play this that is better than anything else they can play in that spot.

Is this a site where we can have meaningful discussions or just be fan boys that can't handle constructive criticism?

What discussions can be had when the card is labeled “literally unplayable”? Because at that point it is not a discussion, you just want people to agree with you because there is nowhere to go with the discussion.

And “constructive criticism”? Lol that’s what this-
i mean this in the nicest way possible but the majority of you are quite terrible at evaluating cards.
-is? First off, you may need to brush up on what constructive criticism actually is, because that is certainly not what you’ve demonstrated through this thread. What’s wrong with fanboys? They can like the card. They’ll play the card, maybe even have it in a FNM winning deck, at that point it makes all that “unplayable” nonsense you’ve been spewing look pretty stupid.

I mean this the nicest way possible, but you come off as an arrogant dick that probably prefers the sound of their own voice over anything else.

magic players are generally bad at evaluating cards. this is not an insult, it's simply true. this is why there's always cards that slip everyone's radar.

i gave plenty of reasons why this card is unplayable in the current format. it just is. mono red is not even the boogeyman anymore.

if you think I'm being a dick about my point of view... well maybe you need to get your panties out of that knot i tied.

    but ok.

This is actually really great (in Standard). It's probably the best card draw spell in the format, by far. Plus if you want to get cute, this gives Teferi's +1 a legit card to cast at opponent's EOT. Pretty much a "GG, I win" card. Really pushed.

Saying that a card is bad is just as silly as saying a card is good at this point because we haven't seen it in play or in action yet. After that then arguments favouring either side are acceptable and more valid.

I don't disagree with this in principal, but it's also not absolute. We've been playing with a lot of these cards for a long time and understand how they interact. I would say--understanding there's more M20 to be spoiled that could change this--we can look at the meta and cards spoiled so far and can at least make an educated guess about a new card's power level.

The current meta is an important qualifier here. Lost of cards in this meta will be gone come rotation, and this card has a full ~15 months to fill in somewhere. So, unless you have a crystal ball, you cannot speak in absolutes, one way or the other. Then combine that with -

i mean this in the nicest way possible but the majority of you are quite terrible at evaluating cards.

and your left with where we’re at now. At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter how good or bad a card is, people will still play it. Nobody is passing out medals to people who guess right about “trash tier” labels. It’s just nonsense and literally adds nothing to the discussion.

I forgot this forum will close, but others will pop up and i'll show up there. I am not afraid of eating crow if I'm wrong, but i'm 100% sure I'm not.

A lot of folks like to live in magical Christmas land and that's fine. But to argue that this card is good is only to delude one-self. Hell, spend your hard earned dollars on playable stuff. This card fits in zero archetypes. Creatures are too good these days that giving one -2 power really doesn't do anything.

The difference with Sarkhan is staggering.

    1) Sarkhan makes your other planeswalkers into threats immediately
    2) The 4/4 dragon actually kind of has text because if you attack the walkers, it will deal one damage to your guys. It's not great, but it's something
    3) Sarkhan will essentially win you the game over 2 turns. This card, does not.

Tapping your lands to draw card is good, but if you get to a point where you can do that AND cast spells, you've already won the game.

My point is that folks tend to over evaluate cards at the onset without thinking of how they can be applied in existing archetypes. Sure, there'll be rotation in October (4 months from now), but you got a LOT of magic to play between then and now. And at this stage, the card is unplayable.

Additionally, I'm not sure why it's an issue to express an opinion to what appears to be the popular opinion? I provide reasons why i think this card is bad and what to be shown scenarios (applicable ones) where it is good and no one has done this. i mean this in the nicest way possible but the majority of you are quite terrible at evaluating cards.

show me a deck in the meta that wants this over anything else. it's not a card that will spawn a deck by itself so you gotta consider which deck needs this. making a 4/4 on t4 that basically has no text is incredibly underwhelming. it's a token that does nothing etb, has no haste and no ability beyond flying. and it getting bounced by teferi effectively means you've done absolutely nothing of note over two turns.

ignore the ultimate because every walker that ultimates usually wins the game. you have to consider what this card can do on its first two abilities in a color that is hardly aggressive.

vryns prodigy is not a good comparison because his minus cost be used right away and flashing back any spell is significantly better than making a token. plus he was a looter which is a good card in itself.

i can see the appeal of this card as a casual. but competitive play? not a sniff. and you can quote me on that.

I'm willing to place a bet with anyone here that this card will see zero competitive play.

also, playing bad cards along her does not make her better. humming bird, really? cmon man.

this card is not aimed at competitive play in the slightest.

did you also fawn over 3 mana jace?

as for my nick name, I'm the king of noobs. you should think about that.;)

Insanely strong planeswalker. This on turn 3 is a major threat for most decks. The only "problem" is that there is an arguably better card - Teferi, Time Raveler - at the same CMC, and which conveniently is a great answer to a turn 3 Yianling.

Ok please help me understand what i'm missing that makes you think that this is a powerful walker??? I even forgot about teferi which is leagues better than this card.

Goyf barely sees any play (if at all) in eternal formats these days. It's been eclipsed by bigger and better things.

Even in standard it would just be ok. It's a vanilla creature that gets stone walled by a 1/1.

Getting lands in the grave is pretty hard in standard.

Most card types we see are:

    1- Creature
    2- Instant
    3- Sorcery
    4- Planeswalker

That makes it on average a 2 mana 4/5 with no other abilities. Personally, I think it would be just fine. People might think "wow goyf in standard" and then never actually end up laying it cuz green has better things to do than cast a french vanilla cookie monster. I can buy into this.

I'm confused about how y'all distracted by the pretty picture and the ultimate because this card is damn awful.

    1) It starts with 2 loyalty, which means the ONLY thing you can do is tick it up.
    2) That first ability effectively does nothing.
    3) In order to activate the second ability (making it make a 4/4 flyer), it takes two turns. And a 4/4 flying token on turn 4 is pretty much on par with the curve. Which is to say, nearly unplayable unless it does something else.
    4) Why on earth would you play this over Narset, which impacts the board immediately and generates card advantage???

Seriously guys, this is unplayable chaff, just like the 3 mana Jace. Too bad cuz the art is great on it.

Looks to me like Gobos are nearly going to be a thing in standard too. No matron but having access to ringleader is gas.

Missing a 2/3 mana lord (which I absolutely expect to show up) - since we have trashmaster - and the possibilities are endless!

    O well some points:
    -origins all over again
-uncommon and rare walkers that looks really playable (I know they are the first spoilers, the ones to hype the set)
-mythic walker with static ability and 3 other loyalty ability
-rare Chandra has one effect that is desirable in modern much like litle Jace from origins(but not mythic rare), and the elemental tokens can be relevant too
-big Chandra wins the game in 6 turns with her + ability, her and liliana dreadhorde commander both are gamewinning if let alone liliana is better vs midrange strategies, Chandra is better vs control strategies
-please can we move on off the gatewatch, there is soo much variants of those characters alread, can wizards please stop making the usual members in main sets after core 20? Like make them in the intro decks of the collection if they are in the story of the block/set, make new and interesting characters as main sales of the sets, Comeon we they will stop printing new jaces and Chandras after we get the 100th new card of each of them?
-I like those 3 Chandra cards, really, just tired of soo many cards with just those characters, think they could save cards for them in the main set when something really special happens to them, the last 4 jaces and Chandras has nothing of special, liliana at least was commanding a horde of zombies last time we saw her (her other cards tho are kind of the same), Gideon at least had a sword that could exile things(but aside ally of zendikar his other cards are kind the same, tho he has less cards), Nissa (?) (well that is other level of same kind of card being printed over and over again, with her amonkhet card being very distinct from the others at least). If we look at ajani he has at least 3 styles of cards, not the ideal but at least it gives depht to the character, garruk has 3-4 styles, Vraska 3, Sarkhan 4, Sorin 3 (or almost). Those characters have diferent style or archetypes of cards but they have less printing than gatewatchers, those have like 4 each but 5x more cards in sets

for those wanting to move away from these walkers... don't think. it's gonna happen. wotc prez has made it a point that they wanted the game to revolve around a series of specific walkers (like chandra). this creates a sort of attachment to the game that makes it easier to sell. it's been like this for years now. it's not about to change.

No offence, but y'all out to lunch on this card. Like every iteration before it, it looks big and flashy. Starts out at 40$ (please don't buy these at 40$) and then quickly fades into obscurity. I guess you can make this "good" if you're playing Narset, but we already are able to do this and that deck isn't breaking anything right now.

It's a cool card, sure. But this is way more EDH staple than Modern bomb. If everyone sees it like that, then coolio.

I would be shocked if this ever becomes anything in modern. But i *could* see a resurgence of High Tide in legacy (well not really because how many people can afford 4 x Candelabras?).

10$ mythic, at most, before the end of the year. You heard it here first folks.

Here I thought there would be discussion of mirrodin besieged as a win-con and artifact producer. Both its modes can be used depending on the board.

I think there are more than enough win conditions now, maybe too many! I think the deck only needs 2 (and the second one is a back up). Although that card definitely does a good impression of Sai!

I think there's potential for a Paradoxical Outcome list with cards like these.

    Ok, let's keep this going.

Goblin Engineer is basically THE card this deck wanted. If we can't make this happen with this card, the deck will simply never happen. This allows you to trim down on copies of citadel so that it's less likely to be a dead draw (plus 6 life when going off). Additionally, it allows to trim down on pieces that try to make the whole thing all in. You can play a game that's a bit more grindy with a combo potential.

Goblin Engineer only reanimates artifacts with cmc 3 or less, though. Comboing it with Trash for Treasure to cheat in Bolas's Citadel is a fine strategy, but doesn't that require 3 cards?

yes correct. the ability to play a grindy game ia better than an all in combo only imo. it adds versatility to a deck that is just a surgical extraction away from doing nothing. i feel like this little guy will play a big role. don't forget you can dunk a bloom and bring it back for little investment.

But can we play a grindy deck with Bolas's Citadel instead of Experimental Frenzy or Future Sight? Costing 2 more mana than the cheapest alternative feels quite ugly and pushes me towards trying to make sure Citadel grants me the biggest CA edge possible...which often means combo decks.

I tried Experimental Frenzy Jund with decent results (and Frenzy in Affinity with good results before it went mainstream), so I know grindy decks with these kinds of permanents are possible. I'm just skeptical that Citadel is better than Frenzy/Future Sight in grindy decks.

I made this comment prior to knowing that future sight was spoiled. Frankly, going the grindy route makes more sense with future sight. This is a very strong card and would be very tempted to build something around it. But ya, it wouldn't be combo based like the citadel is. But i think it would have more even matchups than the citadel ever could.

None the less, I still feel like the Goblin is what will put citadel on the map if the deck is ever to amount to anything.

This thing stacks. It is incredibly obnoxious. And like TheGreatGig said, combined with Thalia...this thing is...weirdly enough, this kind of card does encourage linear non-interactive game play.
