I loved them in limited. Helped you splash a color or add to sunburst or use off color activated abilities (looking at you Pewter Golem). Also, late game, they can wield equipment.
Actually I'd say more Cancun really (having lived in the UK for a year, it was where all the young college kids went, much like Cancun is for US students)... to be fair, there hasn't been any major Magic events out there. Purhaps there is a bit of "avoiding anything too touristy?" Let's face it, Nationals in Minneapolis didn't exactly scream "come hang out."
I'd avoid nations like Mexico until they can secure things up against the drug cartels. Cancun just had a bar molotov cocktailed bombed and I read about mass murders by these cartels daily.
The issue with the tiebreaker system is that it creates an additional luck variable. I can win each and every game I played and still be considered inferior to another player due to tiebreakers. Sure, they may have played a more "difficult" opponent, but they were given that opportunity, I was not.
If you win every game in the swiss portion of the tournament, you'll be the only undefeated player so tie-breakers won't matter.
The best (and by best I mean worst) tie-breaker I know is during 2-headed giant tournaments, the team who registered for the tournament earliest has the highest tie-breakers (being very serious).
Overall this top 8 rule sounds good. Kind of janky to make it to the top 8 as the first seed just to lose the roll and have that burn deck that squeaked into top beat you by half a turn the games they got to go first.
Heh. That was my wife. And it was a minor foot injury.
Wow, I was talking with a friend at GenCon after watching Thursday's FTV handouts and figured someone was going to get hurt, which I was surprised they kept doing it the same way. Had someone gotten hurt, I would imagine Wizards' ultimately responsible, and would have to settle for more than a promo Day of Judgement. Also, GenCon LLC and the convention center would have some liability allowing it to continue through to Sunday. I even saw someone fall after getting pushed into and knock over a speaker. It looked like the table sheldon was edh'ing at was going to get flipped too.
I wished they had done a lottery or scavender hunt. For the lottery you get a number in the morning and stamp your badge for that day, and numbers X to X+100 get one.
For the scavenger hunt idea, they could post at their booth and on twitter daily at 10am (when the dealer hall opens) 10 items associated with the game magic (Revised Mons Goblin Raiders, Snow-Covered Island, a card with a dragon, dci card, etc) and the first 100 people to bring them to the Wizards' booth gets a FTV.
Any speculation as to why some of the "best" or most deserving dragons were not in this FTV:Dragons might be because they're saving them for FTV:Dragons 2? Seems likely that if they just sent out the best 15 now, there is no incentive to buy the next boxed set.
I know people in my area are excited for a FTV: Angels/Demons/Legends, but it seems likely that another Dragons set would be possible.
Codenames have nothing to do with the sets they refer to.
The codenames for Odyssey, Torment, and Judgment were Argon, Boron, and Carbon. Did they have anything to do with the periodic table of elements?
It could be a new set for all we know.
I agree, the codename doesn't have anything to do with the set, it's just a better option than calling it "Set to be named later" or "Set name still waiting for Brand to approve."
I'd be happy if it were a reprint set, including cards needed to play Vintage or Legacy. I'd also be happy if it had cards that were more "fun" that would go with vanguard.
[Edit]- Perhaps the connection with this being announced on Gleemax and there being a Gleemox in the Mtgo database isn't a coincidence?
Can't these "Hey I just got XXXXX in packs I openned!!!" be auto-deleted unless a scan is upload? The same thing happens everytime. No one believes it, demanding scans, the author claims he will tell us all when we see the proof for ourselves, and even gets "someone else" to try to vindicate their original post and a couple hours later it gets locked by a mod. The auto-delete would save everyone the trouble.

Sub Haunting Echoes for leyline and you've convinced me.
