Say I wanted to use Elder Deep-Fiend's ability to tap down 4 of my opponent's permanents at the beginning of their turn but obviously after their untap step. Do I flash it in on upkeep? Or do I respond to the untap step? What's the proper wording there?
Did anyone play SaffronOlive's Insolent Red build over on mtggoldfish? I played it a little bit when SOI first came out and it was tons of fun. I'm thinking of tweaking the list with the new EMN stuff. I've especially got my eye on Otherworldly Outburst in the deck:
in my humble opinion, Madness decks in SOI weren't that competitive because of the lack of payoff cards. Voldaren Pariah seems to be the missing piece. well, we'll find out this weekend on the first tourney with EMN legal.
Are you hoping to ever transform the Pariah? Or just capitalize on the cheap madness cost? Because that's a steep transform clause

These mono black decks have been tearing up our weekly 2 Dollar Legacy event. They rip apart your hand, kill your creatures, destroy your lands, and hate out everything. Here are two of the lists for reference:
I was thinking some kind of Robots build since black has no way to deal with a Cranial Plating. Mind you, I'm not looking for a pure anti-black deck with Whirling Dervish and White Knight, just something that won't fold to these kinds of builds.
Everyone has been watching Pyromancer. Him and Delver fell below $2 but luckily I'm not playing tonight so I don't have to deal with that crap. I have been meaning to do something with Blood Artist, however.
I played UR Thopters back when it was Standard legal and I LOVED it. The fact that you could swing with a 5/5 on turn 2 or deal 5 out of nowhere with Shrapnel Blast was hilarious. I'm trying to come up with a (budget) version of the deck for fun. Here's a very rough preemptive list:
This week it was a paid event, so your standard 4 rounds. I played the above elf list and ended up going 3-1 for second place. Here's a brief summary of each game:
Round 1 vs. some kind of Zoo deck: he had Kird Apes, Flinthoof Boars, Boggart Ram Gangs, etc and some burn. Wasn't too bad of a matchup, I took Game 1 pretty easily. Game 2 he was much faster, killing off my boarded-in Wellwishers on sight. I was able to stabilize at 2 life, but that's not where you want to be vs a burn deck. His Sin Prodder revealed a Magma Jet on upkeep which killed me either way. I ran away Game 3 with 2 Wellwishers and a heavy board of elves. He would attack for 13-18 every turn and I would just gain 20 life at EOT until I eventually overwhelmed him.
Record: 1-0
Round 2 vs Mono Black Rogues: I watched this guy dismantle my friend in round 1 with a turn 1 Dark Ritual into Duress and Hymn. Bleh. Anyways, he wasn't able to get anything going fast enough either game. I think he even kept a one-land hand Game 2. Either way, I ran him over with insect tokens.
Record 2-0
Round 3 vs Heartless Altar: these kinds of nonlinear decks mostly go over my head, but I knew he was trying to mill me with the Altar/Myr Retriever/Heartless combo, which he did pull of game 2. He mostly just spent the time pondering, preordaining, and brainstorming while I went at him with all I had. We went to game 3 and I knew I had to be fast. He got most of the pieces out but wasn't able to finish as he had taken too much damage from Tarnished Citadel (he was at 1 life).
Record 3-0
Round 4 vs Mono Black stuff - Garys, Pack Rats, Duress, Hymn, etc. Basically killed everything I had and powered out an early Tombstalker. I sided in my anti-board wipe tech and Tormod's Crypt, but I never saw either of them game 2. He eventually started destroying my lands with Choking Sands and it was over pretty quick after that.
Record 3-1
It was a pretty fun night. I don't think my deck is that powerful and I'm not gonna run it next week as there are two other elf decks and they are very easy to hate out. It's also not the most creative/exciting build either. So back to the drawing board? I'm thinking mono white clerics or something obnoxious...the meta is heavily skewed towards black.
It wasn't the greatest night, for several reasons.
1. Since it was a free event, it was single elimination. I did not know that until I arrived. I ended up losing in round one, so I drove 20 minutes to play Magic for 20 minutes and then went home after expecting to play for at least four hours. Feels bad.
2. There were 2 other Elf decks, and I drew the mirror (although both of our builds were very different). That wasn't very fun, but we were pretty even.
3. My draws were awful. I didn't see a single Wellwisher in 3 games and only drew one Drove. I've since moved the Wellwishers to the side.
4. My opponent made illegal plays. He counted my elves while Shaman of the Pack's trigger was on the stack. I caught it the second time, but I need to RTFC more closely. Also in Game 2, he attacked with 4 creatures. Since we were both playing elves, there was a lot of boost in his Timberwatch Elf's ability. However, knowing it wasn't lethal, I blocked 3 creatures and let one through which he predictably boosted. He then bounced the Timberwatch with Wirewood Symbiote, played the Timberwatch again, and illegally tapped it again to boost for lethal. I didn't realize that until I was ten minutes from home.
I'm not too worried about it although the illegal plays kind of annoy me, but it was a free casual event (though the winner did get 2 EMA packs) so I didn't worry about it too much. However, the event has become so popular that we're increasing the players from 16 to 32 and making it a paid event. I'll pay better attention next week. What WAS encouraging was that my deck played exactly as it was meant to in Game 1 so I can take that away at the very least.
Anyways, if anyone has any suggestions on my deck, I'd love to hear them.
Don't you mean Average? Or Median? TCG is tricky like that. They constantly change their metrics. Where do you go to check?
Why use Mid/Average/Median anyway? It's not like anyone actually pays that much (I hope). Why pay not-the-lowest price?
How does a player prove that his/her deck is legal? I sometimes use TCG to check if a deck is worth max $20 total, but that doesn't give me information on every single card.
What if a price fluctuates between the day the deck is built and the day of the tournament?
Unless a single printing of that card happens to be under $2, it is eligible.
Don't you mean "If a single printing..."?
As for the decks... tier 1 Peasant decks should provide a good starting point. Like, Astral Slide/Lightning Rift, Soul Sisters or Grapeshot Elves. Maybe a Swans of Brynn Argol deck. And there's probably something to be found in the Budget Legacy forum, though it's not usually that budget.
If the card goes over $2, it's deemed illegal, all the way right up until the tournament. Bear in mind that it's not super strict, as the entry fee is free and the winner only gets 2 packs. The moderator has a watchlist of cards that are constantly hovering right around the mid price. A good to way to verify the price is to use magiccards.info.
I actually already have a cycling deck, but wouldn't you know it - fluctuator is over $2.
I recommend cephalid breakfast. I did it on a $10 total budget, but with $2 per card you actually get access to cantrips. Mono-black control is always a good option on a budget too.
My LGS just started this weekly event that greatly tickles my casual fancy. The rules are as follows:
- All cards must be under $2 TCG mid. Unless a single printing of that card happens to be under $2, it is eligible. For example - there are some printings of Dark Ritual and Counterspell that are under $2, so that makes them legal even though other printings may be more expensive.
- All decks must follow the legacy banlist.
That's it. Everything else is normal: 60 card deck/15 card sideboard/3 match rounds, etc. The only rules are the ones above. So far the meta includes the following: 8 post, infect, elfball, affinity, storm, burn, reanimator, enchantress, mono black, etc. People are going T1 Dark Ritual into Master of the Feast for a 5/5 flyer, so I want there to be some SHENANIGANS.
So how about it, casual players? Can we build some ruthlessly competitive decks where every card is under $2 and not from the legacy banlist? I HOPE WE CAN!
My earliest ideas include some kind of cheap Heroic build or mono black aggros with Shadow creatures. What say you all?
Question, when Smothering Abomination and Catacomb Sifter are on the battlefield, how do the triggers line up? Sac a guy to Abomination for the upkeep trigger - do you then scry off the Sifter before you draw a card? Or do you draw then scry?
Thanks in advance.
Are you hoping to ever transform the Pariah? Or just capitalize on the cheap madness cost? Because that's a steep transform clause
T1: Play Insolent Neonate
T2: Enchant the Neonate with Skin Invasion
Opponent's end step: target Neonate with Otherworldly Outburst, sac it, untap with a 3/4 and a 3/2 on turn 3.

Elves can usually kill you by turn 5, and artifact hate obviously needs to be a thing. I was thinking of running this:
