I'm seemingly in a huge minority but I think the art looks pretty cool.

While the prize support doesn't seem terrible do to the spread of prize, as it's not top heavy prize support, the fact that it's in packs is terrible. I can't stand places that pay out in packs as opposed to cash or store credit. Sure, the packs might end up being worth more, but you can never go infinite, and I'd rather lose value so I don't have to pay cash for cards/drafts in the future.

This store does do store credit as prizes for the Standard tournaments. I believe its 50% of all entry fees to first place, 30% to second place, and 20% to third place, where the entry fee is $5 per person.

Are you actually complaining about that payout? In my experience that is probably the highest payout I have ever seen in a draft.

I'm not complaining at all. I consider myself good enough to be mostly okay with rare re-drafting but I see arguments on both sides. My main question was that is rare drafting justified given the already solid prize support that the store offers, and the consensus seems to be that it is.

How many rounds are there? How many players in total are competing for the prizes?

If it's 8 players, 3 rounds, $15 is fair. Look at it this way: $15 gets each player 4.5 boosters (3 boosters for drafting, 1.5 boosters in prizes). The extra packs for 3rd+ and pity packs are gravy.

Redrafts do not alter the total payout, only the distribution of said payout.

    Yep, 8 players, 3 rounds.

I don't intend for this to become a debate on the merits of rare redrafting but I suppose that is essentially the heart of my question.

This LGS holds drafts where the entry fee is $15. First place gets 9 prize packs, second place gets 6 prize packs, and third place gets 4 prize packs. Everyone else gets 1 prize pack for each match won (and a pity pack if you dont win any). At the end of the draft, they re-draft all rares and foils.

So basically now you have a situation where first place not only gets 9 packs as a prize, but also gets the best card pulled in the entire pod. I've seen foil money mythics in many pods in the past so first place basically gets $80+ of value from a fifteen dollar draft. If you didn't place you usually just get a bunch of crap rares.

I would understand using rare re-draft as a form of prize support if it were a cheaper draft, but with a $15 dollar draft, there already is strong prize support with the packs. It seems like adding the rare re-draft only serves to really screw over newer players and reward all the veterans. Doesn't sound that fair to me to pay 15 bucks only to hand over all my rares and pray that my deck is able to beat enough people that I can get some of them back. Or is it more fair because with actual prize pack support, you have more incentive to make the best deck you possibly can?

I'm pretty torn on this. Thoughts?

  • posted a message on Can I change my name that is registered with the DCI?
Not entirely sure where this belongs but I thought I would ask it here.

So I've had a DCI number for a few years now but haven't really played competitively until recently. When I signed up for a number, I registered with my legal first and last name. However, I have always gone by my middle name.

Whenever I go to an LGS for an event, I always have to sign up with my first name that I don't actually use and this is also the name that gets used in all the pairings. For convenience sake, I want to just change my DCI info so that my middle name is used as my first name so there isn't any confusion when I play in events.

However, the DCI website says "ENTRIES OF NICKNAMES AND FALSE TITLES MAY RESULT IN A SUSPENSION FROM THE DCI. "

Would changing my first name to my middle name because that is my preferred name be considered an entry of a false title or nickname that could get me in trouble? Is it just not worth bothering trying to change this?

Has anyone that ordered multiple yesterday heard from Hasbro about their order being cancelled?

I can't imagine they would re-list them on the site before informing people that their order was cancelled.

If you wanted the cards that badly, you ought to have gone to SDCC. There is absolutely no grounds for you to think you are entitled in any way to get these promos. It's not like your ****ing blacked-out Chandra is in any superior (gameplay-wise) to a normal one from a goddamn booster pack. Quit *****ing.

This is kind of an absurd thing to say considering going to SDCC would cost up to or above a thousand dollars in flight fare, hotels, food, etc. depending on where you live. Not to mention that if you were to go to SDCC just to get some cards, you would have had just a few weeks to book a flight and make arrangements considering they just announced these things in the past month.

  • posted a message on Lost (not stolen) cards
When I quit Magic for the first time and sold my collection, I kept a select few cards that I wanted to keep for nostalgia's sake. These included one of each Onslaught fetchland, a foil Engineered Explosives, a foil Chrome Mox, and some other stuff.

When we moved out of our house to move to a bigger one, we hired movers to pack stuff up and I was out of the house at the time. When I came back the cards were either gone or packed up, and to this day I've never been able to find them.
