    what about ancestral recall Wink

Valid, but I should have clarified that I was searching for cards that aren't banned or restricted in any sanctioned format.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I'm looking at cards that focus more on card filtering/card selection than raw drawing power. Although, "draw a card" after doing that is ideal. I forgot about non-blue effects, like Sensei's Divining Top. That's useful for my non-blue decks.

What other cards are like Brainstorm, primarily in terms of low casting cost? I can think of Ponder and Telling Time but are there others? Thanks.

    White has weaknesses, per se.

    1) No direct damage, like Lightning Bolt.
    2) Few effects that deal damage to creatures directly. Most damage-dealing effects against creatures are conditional or combat-oriented.
    3) Few outright destroy effects on creatures. Most are exile effects. Cards that get rid of a creature on the battlefield are either conditional (Divine Verdict) or give the opponent something (Path to Exile)
    4) Primarily smaller creatures in its creature card pool.
    5) Large effects tend to hit everybody

Artifacts, in general, are designed to provide effects that certain colors lack. The trade-off is that the effect often costs more than the effect in its native color. The design on this card is balanced. White has cheaper exile spells. Black has Unmake. Blue, Green, and Red colors can't exile in general, so to access this effect, it will cost more.

Can you use Swerve on Cancel and make Cancel target itself? Thanks.

Alluring Siren and Air Elemental from M10 have classical quotea, but recent core sets don't seem to have as many of these as they did back in Revised. I wish they use more of these in core sets.

There are manga/anime styles that don't make females look like cute teenagers. Based on Chandra's Western art style, I would have thought Chandra to be a little older. Character design in the style of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood might be more on target with the creative direction, in my opinion.

    Quote from luminum can
No, I'll say it again, M10 already had a cycle of lords. This cycle will be something that differentiates M11 from M10. It will be something new.

It didn't quite have a proper cycle. It had lords, but they were not all symmetrical. Captain of the Watch was 6-mana and not a 2/2. Vampire Nocturnus was 4-mana and not a 2/2.

EDIT: Ok, if Wizards meant new as in a completely new cycle, then the lords would not be correct. But since M10 had asymmetrical lords, Wizards can pull a Maro-ism and say that Knight Exemplar and Captivating Vampire are "new," so the whole cycle is "new" since symmetrical lords had not been in M10.

I am betting on a Lord cycle that Kajar listed.

    Captivating Vampire
    Knight Exemplar
    Elvish Archdruid
    Merfolk Sovereign
    Goblin Chieftain

All 3 mana, two of which are from their base color. All 2/2. All with a creature type that is common for that color. Vampires for black, Elves for green, and Knights for whilte.

The number crunch thread still leaves open the possibility of Merfolk Sovereign and Golbin Chieftain, both of which are 3-mana, 2/2 lords for their respective creature types.

I am pretty sure we discussed the lord of atlantis vs preacher ordeal before in this thread. With that said, we do play 4 swords to plowshares, engineered explosives, and path to exiles for reasons such as Lord of atlantis and such.

Yes, we've talked about Preacher vs Merfolk deck. Sorry, but I wasn't sure if the Lords were worth stealing in this context, but you clarified that now.

    Quote from Cecilia
As for shackles against merfolks, I suppose it could work if you have alot of basic islands available since your going to need them to play around wasteland. Generally though, Shackles seems more resource intensive then preacher because with preacher you don't need to run that many islands and he only has tap for his activation cost.

I'm running a UW-only build, so I have more islands than other builds. But I see your point that Preacher is quicker to cast and use.

Thanks for your opinion on this.

Would Vedalken Shackles be ok against the Merfolk matchup? Since most Merfolk have power less than 3 power, so three islands should not be hard to get out, right?

If the Merfolk player has a Lord of Atlantis out, what creatures would you steal? Lord of Atlantis give islandwalk to all merfolk, so if you steal one, you can't block your opponent's merfolk. Or do we need to counter or StP Lord of Atlantis quickly and steal something else? Sorry for the seemingly stupid question. I'm trying to visualize what to do in this situation, since islandwalk is pretty detrimental against the Landstill deck.

what are you trying to say?

an indestructible creature can go to the graveyard if they are dealt with too much damage?

An indestructible creature goes to the graveyard if their toughness is reduced to 0. This is not the same as a creature accumulating damage greater than or equal to its toughness.

If you had a 1/1 that is indestructible and it is targeted with a -X/-X effect like Disfigure, that creature's toughness will be zero, so it will be sent to the graveyard. It's not a destroy effect in this case.

If you had a 1/1 that is indestructible and it is targeted with Lightning Bolt that does 3 damage, that creature stays alive. It is now a 1/1 that is indestructible with 3 damage. It is destroyed if you somehow remove its indestructibility before the turn's cleanup step.

EDIT: Somebody beat me to it.

No, it comes back with the 3 counters.

306.5b A planeswalker is treated as if its text box included, “This permanent enters the battlefield
with a number of loyalty counters on it equal to its printed loyalty number.” This ability creates
a replacement effect (see rule 614.1c).

O-ring a Planeswalker permanent causes it to change game zones. If it is brought back into the battlefield, it just comes back with whatever loyalty counters it normally starts off with.

EDIT: Someone beat me to it.
