What you have is a 0/1 Noble Hierarch with a +1/+1 counter on it. Static abilities all apply continuously, and the replacement effect "...enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it" is in fact a static ability. Both effects work at the same time, both are working the next time state-based actions are checked, and they cancel out with regard to the Hierarch's power and toughness.

Like all core sets, M20 does not have one single setting, even though they may have associated story vignettes that are set in a specific time and place. For example, while there were stories published for M19 that were set on ancient Dominaria and Tarkir, that does mean that all the cards in the set were actually associated with those settings.

Well, you don't lose the game, because you can't; you continue playing and if the effect still applies when your opponents have all lost the game, you're the winner. But as soon as that effect stops applying (assume you have 0 life and control a Platinum Angel and it leaves the battlefield), you lose the next time state-based actions are checked if you still don't have a positive life total.

    The DCC: July 31, 2019

    Welcome to the DCC!
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post in the DCC Discussion Thread.

    How To Play

How does this card-making game work? It's simple! Whenever your card receives a vote in the day's poll, you receive [1] point for the month. If your card ends up with the most votes for that day, you will receive [2] additional points for the month. In the event of a tie, each person who tied receives [1] additional point. At the end of each month, the person with the most points on the scoreboard wins that month, then the scoreboard is cleared for the next month. You can participate in as many or as few days as you want in any month.

    Rules

    • Each day you may post any card you want. On the next day all of the posted cards will be put into a poll the thread as long as your card didn't get disqualified - see the next point for more details. If you post more than one card in a DCC thread, only the first card you post will be taken.
    • When you vote, you need to make exactly two votes for two different people. Vote for the cards that are listed in the first post, not other cards being posted in the thread. If you notice that you've only voted for one person, include your second vote in a post, even if you're not submitting a card.
    • If you want to change your vote for any reason, post that change in the day's thread (you can include it with your card if you want). Changed votes in the discussion thread will be ignored.
    • Voting for only one person, for three or more people, or for yourself will earn you an asterisk by your name in the monthly leaderboard. So will failing to vote if you've posted a card. (We're not going to do anything about people who don't vote or post cards; that would be kind of silly.) This indicates that you're on probation for the next 21 days. If you're on probation and you make another improper vote, your card will be disqualified. Repeated disqualification is grounds for warnings and/or infractions for not following the game rules, so please don't do it.
    • Voting for everything in the poll will be grounds for a lifetime ban from the DCC. Don't do it. It just wastes the thread creators' time.
    • If you wish to post a render, please use the hyperlink option when posting your card and make the card name the image link. Renders are usually large enough to clog up the list, so submit a text-formed card and (optionally) a link in the name to the render.
    • This thread is just for your card submission. Take your questions/comments to our discussion thread. If it's a question, comment, or complaint about probation, PM me instead and I'll explain it.
    • Anyone can post the new thread for the day. When you post it, make sure that:
      • You have a poll in the thread;
      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);
      • The poll is marked as public and multiple choice with a one-day time limit; and
      • You update the leaderboard with the previous day's scores.
(An easy way to post the new thread is to hit the multiquote button on every post in the previous day's thread, then click Post Reply. Select everything in this post, copy it, and then paste it into the first post for a new thread. You'll have to clean up a few small things, like quote tags around the opening post and the previous day's cards.)

    Notes of the Day

No entries today. I only want to ask everyone who participated this month to vote for yesterday's cards to get a final score for the month, and to thank everyone who's ever played in the DCC for an incredible run. I hope to see every single one of you and more besides in the MTGNexus edition of the DCC, and not only that, in the other monthly contests.

Yes, the flavor text is a quote from "Waiting for the end" by Linkin Park. A song and a line that are very appropriate for this day. The first line of the song would also be: "This is not the end, this is not the beginning...", as would be many others from that song.

  • posted a message on July MCC Round 3 (finals) - It's over
    Design -
(1.5/3) Appeal: Txmmy prefers their card advantage to be less costly. Definitely Jxnny uses here including Aristocrats.dek. Spike would sometimes be willing to play something like this but is well aware of what would happen if this spell was countered (hint: a blowout in the wrong direction).
(2.5/3) Elegance: There's an "X+1" in the text (incorrectly - see below - but still). Definitely a smallish inelegant element in an otherwise understandable card.

    Development -
(3/3) Viability: Sacrificing permanents and impulse draw are both red things and this card should very much be rare.
(2.5/3) Balance: Neither overpowered nor underpowered per se, but this card is very swingy. It being cast will decide games one way or the other, and that's a lot to ask out of a three-mana spell.

    Creativity -
(1/3) Uniqueness: Very similar to the likes of Reprocess.
(2.5/3) Flavor: Name feels off - it seems like mass removal instead of sacrificing to impulse draw - and then what's the connection between multikicker and New Phyrexia?

    Polish -
(2.5/3) Quality: "Exile the top X cards of your library, where X is 1 plus the number..."
    (2/2) *Main Challenge: Done.
    (2/2) Subchallenges: And done.

    Total: 20.5/25
    Design -
(2/3) Appeal: Txmmy and Jxnny both want to try this out but it's way too unpredictable for Spike.
(1.5/3) Elegance: A wordy card overall whose effect is a possibly fairly lengthy mini-game.

    Development -
(3/3) Viability: Black and rare seem right - this card feels a lot like Choice of Damnations after all - but maybe being BR would have been even better? Still, fine as-is.
(3/3) Balance: Five mana is a prohibitive enough cost and an effect that requires enough permanents that this card won't make any games miserable in the early goings. Still, might not make you many friends at certain Commander tables.

    Creativity -
(2/3) Uniqueness: Feels like a combo of the aforementioned Choice of Damnations and Pain's Reward - both, however, wacky and unique cards.
(1.5/3) Flavor: Name's very generic and doesn't really describe what the spell is doing; no room for flavor text, however.

    Polish -
    (3/3) Quality: Fine.
    (2/2) *Main Challenge: Done.
    (2/2) Subchallenges: And done.

    Total: 20/25
    Design -
(2.5/3) Appeal: This is an all-rounder, with Txmmy possibly liking it the least but still wanting to see the looks on everyone's faces when they pull it out at a key moment.
(3/3) Elegance: Somehow very very complicated and very very elegant at the same time.

    Development -
(3/3) Viability: Rare feels right - it's a unique effect that isn't quite big enough for mythic. White might be more controversial but I fully believe that it's justified in that color and there's precious little precedent; a couple of cards end turns but nothing ends phases.
(3/3) Balance: An extremely powerful card... under just the right circumstances. Otherwise, well, it's a combat skip and nothing special. Ultimately something that can turn games around if it's played very smartly.

    Creativity -
(2.5/3) Uniqueness: Time Stop is the precedent - and Holy Day in a pretty narrow sense - but this is a pretty wild thing in white. Still, just feels totally in-color and a great pie expansion.
(3/3) Flavor: Absolutely perfect top to bottom.

    Polish -
(2/3) Quality: Not a lot of precedent for this wording but it'd probably be "Cast this spell only during combat. End the phase." No "current" needed.
    (2/2) *Main Challenge: Good.
    (2/2) Subchallenges: And done.

    Total: 23/25

Fortunately for him (not for others, certainly) Caumotch knows most of her moves and takes a chance on an attack that should banish her for a while.
