    Some questions:

    1. Would Monastery Swiftspear be better than Goblin Guide in this type of deck? I'm still undecided to use a playset of guide or a playset of swiftspear.
    2. Is the manabase ok? This is basically a red deck splashing green for Noose and Blossoming, so I thought 8 green sources might be good enough.
    3. Is Blossoming Defense ok? Or it would be better to use Rancor or maybe Giant Growth?
    4. Are there any good red madness cards that I can add to this deck?
    Thanks for reading. Smile

    Introduction... please read:

Hi, to start this deck is not intended to be super competitive. Won't be bringing it to FNM. Created only for nostalgia purposes - and for casual Modern format playing with friends and cousins when they visit my house. Went for RG, since it's not possible to make a decent UG madness deck that is Modern legal.

All cards used are cards that I already own.

    12 Madness enablers:

Noose Constrictor - modern legal Wild Mongrel

Insolent Neonate - fast and reliable, allows the casting of a madness spell on turn 2.

Faithless Looting - helps madness cards, and also fills the yard for Grim Lavamancer

    12 Madness cards:

Fiery Temper - lightning bolts 4-8

Bloodmad Vampire - he dies to almost anything, but the 4 power is decent.

Reckless Wurm - 3 mana 4/4. Not really impressive, but he can appear at instant speed as long as a neonate or noose is alive.

    Other support cards:

Goblin Guide - efficient beater on turn one. He can do a lot of damage against slower decks. My Modern Burn deck is taking a rest, so the Goblin can stay here for now.

Grim Lavamancer - for removing blockers, and he can deal the last few points of damage an opponent with low health.

Blossoming Defense - for protecting important creatures like Lavamancer. Also allows Reckless Wurm to fight with bigger creatures.

Lightning Bolt - needs no explanation.

The deck has no sideboard, since it will only be used at home.

Have noticed that the goyf stocks at SCG have been slow to sell. And a goyf is only 67 dollars now for SP of the 2017. Perhaps the slow sales are making the price drop??

Hopefully, it will go down even lower next month. Smile
At the current printing rate I think 50 dollar Goyfs are coming are way. Tarmogoyf isn't as specially as it used to be, Cheap vanilla beaters are more common now. I need to pick up 3 more myself but I'm going to wait to pick them up.

Honestly, I've already suffered some loss. Bought a 2017 SP goyf for 76 dollars, in about ten days that same SP goyf is down to 67 dollars at SCG. Their 2015 I think is already down to 63. Since the price of goyf is unstable now, I won't buy one next month - will use the money on another card instead. I do hope goyf get reprinted in that iconic masters set... so that the price goes down a bit more.

Need a reprint of Compost for helping to fight the Death Shadow decks.

As someone who started magic during the time that Basking Rootwalla was standard legal.... I'm not upset with the Sandwalla at all.. because I don't play Standard anymore. Only playing Modern now.

Anyway, the sandwalla artwork is nice. Might buy a set and throw him in a casual "only play this at home" madness deck but still modern legal... with noose constrictor, reckless wurm, and fiery temper. Yes, mr. sandwalla has no madness,, but he's just there because Basking Rootwalla called that he couldn't make it to the party due to not being modern legal. ^^

@The Fluff, I asked a friend to switch up their deck a little and played against a Grixis Shadow list with Nights Whisper and Ancestral Visions slotted in. It was in fact tougher to play against than the regular version in my opinion. Still, I think that I've figured out why your match experience seems to differ compared to mine. We played five games in total, of which I won four. Aggression, and persistent threats was key. Kitchen Finks, Gideon of the Trails, Eldrazi Displacer, Restoration Angel, and Sun Titan were MVP. The only real difference between our games and your play by play was that it seemed my friend had to commit more removal which tied up their mana and slowed down their overall gameplan. When I did cast Wrath of God to clean away the board, they were able to restock effectively but Gideon, of the Trails or Eldrazi Displacer kept Death's Shadow, Tasagir, and Angler in check while still present a clock and coutning down to Emeria, that or Sun Titan. My opponent did play through an active Emeria at my promoting and I was surprised. The game did not immediately end as I thought it would but rather I was usually in position of reanimating Lone Misionary for the first few turns before committing to real threats like Flickerwisp or Restoration Angel.

In conclusion I think that resiliency of the creatures and aggression that I was provided tied up my opponents resources by making them commit multiple removal spells a turn instead of advancing their own board state. Gideon, Sun Titan, and Eldrazi Displacer would often also force my opponent into committing multiple threats to the board which would be cleaned up by a Wrath of God.

I'm not sure if that helps at all but I hope so. If your still having trouble, I would suggest asking to swap decks and play with the one that you were losing too. It helps get a feel of how the deck plays overall. Along with the strengths and weaknesses and what kinds of cards are most difficult to deal in Emeria.

    Thanks for your effort. Smile

That particular Grixis player is not a regular playtest partner. Only see him during Sunday Night Magic. As far as I know, his deck has 4 Tasigur, 2 Death Shadow, unknown number of ancestral vision, Kolaghan's command, Angler, and Snapcaster. No thoughtseize, but has Remands, terminate, dreadbore, serum vision, and night's whisper. It seems his list is optimized to fight against UW control decks, GBx decks, and the mirror match which is our usual meta during Sunday Night Magic. Anyway, I'm unfavored game 1 - 60/40 in his favor... but becomes close to even after sideboarding. I don't have a Gideon of the Trials right now, but I use Elspeth Knight Errant instead. An active Emeria greatly increases my chance of winning... although there was one time he was able to kill me with an Emeria active.. dismember my two wall of omens.. his 2 shadows are both 10/10 - they attack, and I'm dead from 18 life.

Just quote the post when you reply, so that I will know that you replied.

    @damagecase

Are you replying to me? Well, I see your point. It is a unique card. I think Ramunap having Crucible of World ability can be compared to Magus of the Moon having the ability of Blood Moon. But I don't really have enough money to shell out for it anymore. The earliest I can buy it is next month. My magic money for this month of July was already spent on a goyf, a windswept heath, and a Treva for my dragon collection... will just be hoping that the price of Ramunap goes down instead of up.

First, the Holostamp is already being faked. There are 3 different ways of doing so (which i encountered), which (for the time being) all can be spotted, nonetheless, if you think holostamps are save, you delude yourself.
If you go for the Holostamp, always inspect them closly, but don´t forget to test the actually card as well.

Second, it seems to be a common practice nowadays to give the fake cards some wear and tear, because a lot of people belive the same jackad does.
Although i encounted it some times, it was always on reserved list cards (that otherwise very easy failed inspection).

Hmm, even the holostamp get's faked? That is a bit disturbing...

Anyway, my response to all these fakes going around is just to not buy anything expensive from small sellers and our LGS. Have been doing it for years now. The only thing I buy these days from our LGS are sleeves, basic lands, tokens, and some very cheap standard cards. All Modern staples - for example...the fetchlands, maelstrom pulse, planeswalkers, and the Tarmogoyf all came from SCG - as I'm sure that a large store like them won't be giving fakes to their customers.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I will wait then. Smile

Not really rushing to have them, just want to have a playset of Crucible creature form. There might be a Modern deck sometime in the near future.. that makes good use of it.

Noticed it when I was shopping around SCG in which goyf to buy. Almost bought their 67 dollar MM15, but noticed that the MM17 looked brighter. Probably noticed it because I'm also a photographer who spends time cleaning cosplay photos for blurs. Anyway, what I said is subjective opinion... some people might prefer the darker look of the MM15 version.

On another price question. What are people's opinion on Ramunap Excavator? Buy now or wait a few weeks / months? They are currently at 7 dollars each.. I'm hoping they might drop to 2 or 3 dollars each..

Does the deck have another card that makes use of high toughness , in case Doran is not drawn?

I know I'm quoting an old post here, but I would LOVE to see a deck that used high-toughness creatures and Phenax, God of Deception. It should be possible to build a deck capable of winning the turn Phenax drops, in combination with toughness-boosting instants (much cheaper to boost toughness than power, this should be easy) and possibly instants that untap all creatures you control. I attempted this in Standard when Phenax was legal, for 2 FNMs. I won one game, I think. Maybe with the larger pool of cards in Modern it would be stronger.

Hmm, maybe Phenax would fit right into one of the Doran decks out there as another win con. Although the manabase would be a bit difficult because blue is needed as a 4th color...

Too late. I ordered the MM17 from SCG yesterday. The reason I chose the MM17 instead of MM15 is because the 2017 version looks brighter. Just personal preference.

    2017

Well, could get the 2015 one when goyf money becomes available again. Smile
Also going to order the "tarmodie" that they're selling there. Maybe next month.

To the OP. Have you tried having a "pet deck", the one that get more attention than the others. For example, my pet deck is the BG homebrew in my sig... the best deck that I own is a complete affinity, but in fnm's I bring the pet deck more often... because I enjoy playing it. Have stopped building Modern decks, after I've become busy improving the homebrew.
