A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era
  • posted a message on New to modern and would like some feedback on my first deck. (UR Control)
Fist thing that stands out is the Ionize. It's a really slow counterspell. I'd switch those out for 1 Remand and 1 Mana Leak. Wizard's Retort should probably be Force of Negation.
The Winged Words and Favorable Winds are so circumstantial that they would be better just being something else. I get the magical christmas land where you have 2 of them out and make a lot of 3/3s. But this style deck wins by achieving inevitably. Think about the games you lost because you drew Favorable Winds but didn't have a flier. Invocation is also not very good here. That makes 7 slots. Sprite Dragon should take the spot of 3 of them. 4 slots could be Monasteries Swiftspear. It's one of the best creatures in modern.
I'd take out an island and a mountain for 2 Reflecting Pool.
That's about all the changes I'd make right now. Then I'd look and see what's performing and what isn't to make changes from there.

They should all be may have target opponent do x. That way you control the outcome. I will say they are all over the place though. They don't fit into the color scheme of what the Mana they produce does. At least most of them don't. Like the blue black one should do the thing where they look at the top card and decide if they want to put it in the graveyard or keep it there. The blue red one would be a good one for scry the green white one should allow them to put a +1/+1 counter on up to one creature they control.
Make it feel like they are getting to do something the color pair does but in a small amount to properly represent the color combination.

Maybe I missed it but what is learn? I like your card design. Seems fitting for the idea with cool design and power level seems about where it should be.

The intention is to have a land that can copy other lands or can act as all creature types at all times. It doesn't need to keep changeling if it's a land. Did I miss something. I need to make it tribal? Thank you guys.

It's really really not friendly to new or younger players. I've been playing the game since it's inception and it took a second to figure out what you are trying to do here. It is very cool but ugly my guy. There has to be a better way. Let me suggest this.

    Batwing Fumes 1B
    Sorcery - Brew
    Each opponent sacrifices a creature.
You may pay an additional 1B as you cast Batwing Fumes. If you do exile target instant or sorcery card with Brew from your graveyard then add the exiled card's effects to Batwing Fumes.

    Devilblood Olio 2R
    Sorcery - Brew
Create 2 1/1 devil creature tokens with menace.
You may pay an additional 1R as you cast Devilblood Olio. If you do exile target instant or sorcery card with Brew from your graveyard then add the exiled card's effects to Devilblood Olio. This pretty much gets the desired effects. BUT it can get better and also allow more powerful spells if you change it up. Right now with my current design you don't want to make powerful brews since for just 2 Mana you can get the effect copied. So a better way should be....

    Batwing Fumes 1B
    Sorcery - Brew
    Each opponent sacrifices a creature.
When you cast an instant or sorcery card with Brew you may pay an additional 1B as you cast it. If you do exile Batwing Fumes from your graveyard then add Batwing Fume's effect to that spell.

The reason you would want to go this route is because you could have a spell such as

    Bearcaller's Sarumit 3GGG
    Instant - Brew
Put 4 2/2 bear creature tokens onto the battlefield.
You may pay an additional 1G as you cast Bearcaller's Sarumit. If you do exile target instant or sorcery card with Brew from your graveyard then add the exiled card's effects to Bearcaller's Sarumit.

While that effect isn't broken imagine if you cast a cheap Brew spell and paid an extra 2 Mana and got 4 2/2 bears. Not balanced at all. So the better way would be...

    Bearcaller's Sarumit 3GGG
    Instant - Brew
Put 4 2/2 bear creature tokens onto the battlefield.
When you cast an instant or sorcery card with Brew you may pay an additional 3G as you cast it. If you do exile Bearcaller's Sarumit from your graveyard then add Bearcaller's Sarumit's effect to that spell.

This design allows you to make the Brew cost different for balance purposes.

    Epitome's Bailiwick
    Legendary Land
    Changeling
Epitome's Bailiwick enters the battlefield tapped as a copy of target land except its name is ~ and it is legendary.

Flavor text actually would fix the issue. Sometimes they do this... Although it's more rare.
Second version seems broken! Yes it puts you off going off the first turn. But my deck has 5 Black Lotuss. Or can just cycle a Wraith or Probe to draw it. It would have to be restricted in Vintage upon print. If that's cool with you then it's kinda fine in recent formats.

Lot of good conversation. The first one is too cheap for that effect. Scry 2 is nearly as powerful as drawing a card. Even Horn of Greed was too powerful. Won a or several major tournaments. You need to either make it cost more or give it a Mana tax/cost.

Pretty sure red can have counterspells if they are limited in some way. I mean the very last printed set does have a red counterspell. I'd like to see this card as you first made it but gave RR as the cost.
Talking about a 2008 "mistake" when they printed one for 2021 holds no water. The game evolves and changes every couple of years.

Path isn't always the best option. This format a slightly better option is On Thin Ice. Reason being you don't want to give an extra land to the Red/Red and Blue Prowess decks. And being sorcery removal isn't really that big a deal when you consider that this deck should always be the aggro deck. They have to leave guys back to block. Only exception to when this deck isn't the aggro really is against the Prowess decks... Then we go back to do we really want to give them extra lands? Nopes. So right now it is the better removal spell.
I challenge yall to open your mind and stop going with the popular option just because it has been correct for so long. The format can shift where the lesser card is actually the better card. Like Condemn when Death's Shadow and Scourge is the top deck to beat.
Besides going up to 30ish creatures I'd put in 2 more lands. Probably Mutavault but the castle that makes a 1/1 guy can also be very good.
Usher of the Fallen while not a human does make humans. And it is putting a challenge up for best white 1 drop in the history of the game. So it should at least be considered.

It doesn't really matter what scenarios you put it in there is also going to be ones where it shines. Say you have a bolt and they are at 4,5,or 6 life but they have a full board. You can swing, exert, and then bolt.
Another could be that you know they only playing small dudes with big butts. Like a defender style deck. 0/4s and the like. This would never get through but with the exert ability you can still punch in for damage.
As you can tell as many negative scenarios you can think of someone else can flip it around. So the point is the card. Is it cool and unique, but not broken? Yes it's good the way it is.

Looks fine. It's a nonabusive lotus card. Could stay as is, but the name doesn't reflect the second ability at all. That is the only tweak I see needed.
