I don't think Magda needs dwarf support to be good so much as gold support to win the game with a dragon.

As of right now the dwarves are sorta like a Ravenous rats, which are moderate playables in limited formats. You kinda have to hit a turn 2/3/4 curve with them to really get value out of them over any number of other 2 drops that exist, so I don't think Magda alone will get there, especially without a good 1 drop dwarf, and really you probably need 2.

I feel like runes could also be similar to seal of fire type enchantments, just from a playability perspective. I have to believe the runes to have moderate effects at best because they never would have printed that cost reduction otherwise, it is too broad if they ever want to go back to it in the future.

I'm betting it's real now. Phyrexia was always the real big bad of Magic going back to antiquities and they need a new baddie since Bolas is "gone" and Im pretty sure the eldrazi are all dead. They never resolved the scars block story line either so we know they are out there, and the praetors are character driven enough that they work for EDH, work for constructed, work for other product lines.

I hope they don't overdo it though. I like the idea of 1-2 of them floating around per set, much like Eye of Ugin was spoiled before the Eldrazi came out.

1 mana cheaper than Vizier makes me think this is far better than some are giving it credit for. If anything in tribal EDH lists it can easily function as a second vizer at the least, and it could see play in elf combos.

That elf doubler feels a bit too good to me. I can easily imagine that in modern or even legacy elves where you have Heritage druid shenanigans.

By the way the commander decks is not the only thing on that page

    collector edition packs

The word kaldheim looks rockstar/heavy metal style

so that means “party hard shred harder” secret lair was secretly a preview of kaldheims showcase art style

I really hope this is the way the showcase stuff looks because it is totally rad. The font is borderline black metal/doom metal style which is very fitting anything Scandinavian / Nordic, and the art itself has a Heavy Metal Comic feel. It would be a LOT of work to do all the showcases in the set with full art ala the secret lair though.

Overall yes but the individual cards and color templates are hit or miss. With a little work on the clarity I far prefer these, though it is just yet another premium treatment that will not match all the other premium treatments we have. I am almost surprised there were not full art etched cards, or etched lands or whatever.

Champion's Helm is far and away superior. Solid Hexproof and +2/+2. Paying one time 3 mana and only 1 to equip is better than paying a low upfront cost and 3 to equip each time. 3 and 1 are good mana costs for tutoring in artifacts, but Helm is the best of these.

    And requires a reprint.

I dislike this logic a lot. It is a singleton format. Just because you already have the best thing in your list does not mean you don't also want the next best thing that is also very good. Fewer colors you use the more powerful this effect becomes and the less likely you are to be able to find either one of them in your deck because you don't have the options to go fish them out.

A large and unimpressed 'meh' for this one. Not the worst equipment in the world, but very much not actually good.
Are you kidding me? It only costs 1 then 3 (or 5) to equip. Of course, it loses it's effectiveness with multicolored generals, but still, most decks are 2-3 colors so it will always protect from 2-3 colors at the least! The +3/+3 bonus is just gravy....

Going straight into my Urza, Lord High Artificer deck.

No? The protections are not the important part of swords. The triggers are. Maybe mono-white is desperate enough for this I guess, but I can't think of a good reason for anyone else to bother.

I can think of a whole lot of reasons Traxios and your Eldrazi Legends may want to also be progenitus. This card represents a pretty huge boost for colorless commanders who are already at a huge disadvantage, and along with some of the other goodies in this set like Lotus and War room you may actually see viable colorless decks in the future.

This is a stealth boost to monowhite commanders, since the only protection you lose that way is the one most don't play and you get the most equipment matters stuff.

Is war room functional in other formats? Does no commander = 0?

WOTC made a card that I don't think they can actually ever ban. The card is legal and playable in 1 format at printing, Commander. That is it. Where as with Oko, or Lurrius or Omnath, if you ban it in like 3-4 formats, there is usually still a place where it is playable, which is usually the way it can be justified for a ban. Imagine buying this set, getting this staple 100+ dollar card, and then having them tell you it is literally a worthless piece of cardboard you won't even be able to sell because it is not legal in any set where it functions?

This is a mistake card, they should have just made it sac for 2 mana or something.

You know, there used to be a Kobold Cheerios deck back in the day, and though I doubt this adds anything to that except style points, there is a very large part of me that really does wish to see this find a competitive home. If could be interesting in Enchantress/Boggles lists because it has the dual mode functions of A) being edict bait to protect your boggle and B) Can voltron up.

    A man can dream.
