This came up at FNM and we weren't really sure what happens.

Golden Guardian was activated, targetting a vampire token.

In response to the activation, the token was Fatal Pushed.

What we were confused at that point is if the ability fizzled because the token was gone, or if the rest of it could resolve and thus if the Guardian was killed that turn (to a Hidden Stockpile for example), it would transform.

Have you considered Naya Engery Super Friends? GWR

I was playing Naya Superfriends before rotation, and it was a beast. In my local meta, it was a dreaded match up; a solid Tier 1.5 deck at the time and just off kilter enough to not have as many answers available for (and still have answers for everything else).

After rotation, I did briefly toy with a Naya Superfriends build; but I was short a Hualti, and overall I didn't really feel like I had the power to run it like I used to (The Naya Oaths were VERY powerful, and now we're just down to Oath of Ajani Frown ). Maybe an energy package would help out; I think I was trying to push a dinosaur package instead but it didn't really work.

IIRC, it was a deck I basically tossed together, with 2 Gideons, 2 Chandra, 2 Nissas, 2 Ajani, 2 Samut, and 1 Huatli; along with cards to support them/help ramp/get them out faster. With as strong as Control is at the moment, I found I just didn't have enough to pull it off. (Not to mention lacking the room for critters to support Samut and Huatli)

I'm running/tuning an Esper tokens deck now, but maybe after the next set I'll toy with another Superfriends build. I've been steadily building up my friends collection to make sure I have those options when I want to shake things up again. I love the Superfriends style and may try a combo other than Naya when I go again.

This is probably what they're doing, although I wouldn't discount "or planeswalker" beind added to every spell that targets and "each planeswalker that player controls" for spells that do not. Most of the cards that would get a serious buff from this are legacy-only anyways. I mean the big ones are Earthquake, Sulfuric Vortex, and Hurricane, right? And the first already has been "fixed" for Magmaquake.

I do wonder, now that Planeswalkers can be legendary, if they will consider adding other properties to a Planeswalker. Probably not since the text box is usually quite full.

But for example above, "Magmaquake" is only supposed to hit nonflyers. We have Planeswalkers that are clearly flyers (Ugin and Bolas for recentish examples), so technically they should not be hit by Magmaquake, but they are with the new reading. If a Planeswalker could have Flying, then Magmaquake would still fit thematically. (Of course it would have to be errata'ed to say "each creature and planeswalker without flying")

Of course that opens up a whole other can of worms that they probably don't necessarily want to jump into.

Another thing to remember, is that a Deck isn't built in a day. It takes time to build up your card pool, and until you do, your decks aren't going to be the best (unless you dump a buttload of money into it all at once).

So build a deck with what you have, and go to the FNMs and Standard Showdowns and learn how the deck plays, what works, what doesn't work, what's working for other people, if you like a particular deck style, etc... and pick up cards when you can. Remember Standard shakes up every time a set is released, and it REALLY shakes up when there is a rotation (like next week with Ixalan), so cards that didn't seem good/seemed worthless can suddenly become good, and the best card in the format, can become garbage with a new release.

In time, especially if you take advantage of prereleases and drafts, your card pool will build up, and you'll find yourself able to be building these Tier 1, Tier 2 decks that win (or at least challenge) at FNM without needing to drop hundreds of dollars in cards all at once.

If you are just starting out, recognize that you are not likely going to win often. But recognize that you are learning. You are seeing what styles you like and don't like. You are learning the card combos that are active out there, and seeing what ones might fit your deck style. You'll often find other players who can give you advice, or may even donate cheap cards to help you out.

And in time, you'll soon find that you'll have a deck that will be challenging, that will be winning, or maybe a deck that just throws a spoiler in your local FNM community, that they have to plan around even if it isn't a Tier 1 or Tier 2 deck, just because they know YOU are showing up. Smile

For Jace ending up on Ixalan, I wonder if it is an effect of Ral's briefing. The disappearing Vraska and the hidden plane might have been tugging at the back of his mind all this time. So when his mind snaps under Bolas's attack and he jumps, it takes him in the same direction Vraska went to.

I'd almost bet that the first scenes of Ixalan stories will include fragments of Ral's briefing echoing in Jace's mind, implying that was how/where he went.

Now that we know Ral is an Agent of Bolas, it does shed a slightly different light on Ajani's mission.

If the gatewatch HAD waited and gathered planeswalkers, there is a somewhat decent chance that Jace would have brought Ral along (as a Frenemy, or with the Common enemy argument), meaning Bolas would have had an inside man into the expanded Anti-Bolas-watch PW crew right from the start.

Even now, assuming Gidds, Chandra and Nissa regroup and meet up to grovel for Ajani's forgiveness, they'll likely be grabbing every PW they can find and feel they can somewhat trust.... So their ranks are probably going to have more than one Bolas-spy in it right from the start, and I doubt any of them are sufficiently paranoid to suspect the new ones, especially with Jace gone. Hell, Ral could show up at Tamiyo's place, claim he knows Jace and join in the team and short of actual mustache twirling, would probably be accepted in right off the bat.

Yeah, it felt like Samut went to Theros; between her spark being ignited by divinity, and the description of the stars, it really felt like Theros. I wonder if that means she'll go back there for our Return to Theros set, with Ajani and Elspeth maybe?

I enjoyed the story even though I knew the events that were coming, the description was good, and the fight certainly worthwhile. Samut immediately returning makes sense. Her entire characterization is that she will NOT abandon a worthwhile fight, and while the fight against the god was done, the whole fight was still on going. I'd be severely disappointed if she hadn't jumped back right away.

I wonder what will happen to the last two gods now. I don't think any cards showed them dieing like Puncturing Blast did, so the field's wide open, if Bolas leaves them, takes them or the Gatewatch kills them/disables them during the fight.

One little quibble I have is the giant sand storm. On the one hand, it would explain how the temples became deserts so quickly. But the actual effect of said sandstorm seemed a lot less dangerous than it should've been, and it blew through quicker than I might expect. Oh well, a fairly minor quibble ultimately. Smile

  • posted a message on Bought my first binder. Now what to do?
I buy a binder per set, just a regular 3 ring binder, and buy a box of 9-up sheets that fit in them. Each pocket I put up to a playset of each card in the set (depends on all I get). Anything more than a playset will either be in my overflow boxes for giving away (commons and uncommons), or in my trade binder (Foils of all types, rares/mythic rares). That way, when I'm building decks (EDH or Standard or Other), I just need to look on Gatherer and I'll know where the cards should be, no matter what rarity.

  • posted a message on What to choose: Archenemy vs planeswalker decks?
Archenemy is probably best played 3 vs 1; so if it is just 3 of you playing, it may not be as fun to play. (You can try to adjust the rules but it can be awkward). So in that respect, the Commander decks may be your better pick.

You might want to look into the Commander Anthology that also just came out. It has 4 decks (and costs more than Archenemy), and comes with the life counter spinners. The extra deck might be useful for some variety and to help you and your kids find a deck theme they like to play.

Otherwise, I'd probably look to get some Commander decks and go nuts. Smile

This curves directly into Ajani Unyielding if anyone wants to give him some love.

    No? Just me...? Okay.

Big Kitty gets some love in my Naya Planeswalker deck... and when he comes out to play, he quickly frustrates my opponents. Smile

As for Djeru, I would love to fit him in; but I just don't have the room. Maybe I'll try him as a 1-of for a bit, to see if the synergy works okay. Nahiri can always use an ultimate target with some value after all.

So even the core sets will be "Large" sets of around 269 cards each. Which means when we are in full Large set deployment, Standard will have over 2000 cards to pick and chose from. That amounts to a 'free' large set worth of cards.

For example, the Scars to M13 Standard period amounted to 1743 cards total; and that period even had an extra large set in it already (Avacyn Restored). Hopefully that gives Standard the card space needed to deal with everything.

Seriously, I hadn't even thought of that, another snow set would be amazing and could perfectly fit in a one-shot block.

Dare I say it? Full Art Snow Basic Lands.

Personally, I missed the original Snow sets, but I've seen them around and it certainly does seem to be something ripe for new development.

Seems very promising. Reading between the lines, the Core sets will be smaller; probably to offset the 3 large block going on now. It also handles the upcoming problem of a Block set only lasting 15 months (Like Hour of Devastation is going to); few people (well I certainly didn't) minded a Core set rotating quick, but having a block rotate that quickly felt wrong to me. Especially since the lore-freedom of a Core set lets them reprint easier. (The Titans lasted 27 months due to reprinting in 2 core sets in a row for example; but reprinting an Hour of Devastation bombs in Summer 2018 would be really difficult)

3 Large sets sort've reflects what my LGS owner commented on last FMN. He regularly does Drafts, and he's noted for years how when a set comes out, Draft is big, then it tapers off. When the second half of a block comes out, the initial spike isn't as high (since you aren't all new cards) and it trails off faster. So this new model will make him happier.

The Masterpieces are a bit hit or miss; I understand why they're making them rarer (for the sets). I'm hoping a bit we'll get a Creature-themed set that would encourage them to do Creature-Masterpieces fairly soon.

Wizards is still trying to figure out who let him out. Smile

As for this card, it looks fun. It costs too much to do much for Saheeli Kitty, but EDH Kitty tribal decks should be fun with it. I might even give up Superfriends for a bit to run it.

If I read this right, this completely hoses the Authority/Thalia counter for Saheeli Kitty. Frown The "Exile all tokens" and the Throne trigger would both go on the stack at the same time, so you can resolve the throne first, see all those tapped down tokens and blast you that way.

Well, I guess Authority is still an answer (thank goodness for the life gain trigger); but Thalia is no longer an answer.
