Oct 30, 2014spooky posted a message on Casual Castle: Deathtouch Pingers Part 1Heart-Piercer Bow got me excited for a second, but if I am reading it correctly it is the bow that does damage, not the creature, so deathtouch would not trigger?Posted in: Articles

Oct 10, 2014spooky posted a message on Casual Castle: Gond ComboFor the most part, this is a Legacy article in that it the deck presented follows the Legacy ban list. However, I would stress that the deck presented (and indeed any deck in the series) is not competitive. This article series is about building casual decks on a budget that follow the Legacy ban list. While this means that many of the cards used in the decks will be common (common cards are usually the cheapest) the decks are not normally pauper legal. There is discussion below about pauper because the deck is fairly close to being pauper legal. Some players are brainstorming on how to shift the list to a pauper legal one so that they may play the strategy in that format.Posted in: Articles

Oct 7, 2014spooky posted a message on Casual Castle: Gond ComboEnlightened Tutor is a good option if you don't mind spending the money. It is around $14 USD though, 3 times as much as the whole deck.Posted in: Articles
Gaining infinite life with Essence Warden or any other similar card is also great, but I'm not sure if it is needed. I could see having maybe two copies of a life gain card in the deck as some sort of back up. Great suggestions, though! -

4 Llanowar Elves
4 Elvish Visionary
4 Wall of Blossoms
4 Wood Elves
1 Reclamation Sage
4 Roaring Primadox
4 Stampeding Serow
4 Stampeding Wildebeests
1 Vital Splicer
1 Arborback Stomper
1 Ridgescale Tusker
1 Somberwald Stag
1 Soul of the Harvest
4 Rhonas’s Monument
20 Forest
I'm currently thinking of changing the numbers on the cost reducers. Monument is legendary, so I think a 3/3 split would have been better. Emerald has a lower CMC, too. I also think the deck doesn't have enough turn one plays. Any ideas?
This leaves you with two options, control or combo. I don't see much in terms of powerful control cards and synergies, but there is a powerful combo at your disposal. It comes from an old archetype appropriately named Life.dec. Basically, Nomads En Kor and Shaman En Kor are interchangeable and can combine with either Daru Spiritualist or Task Force to create a creature with Infinite Toughness. Add in Condemn targeting your own creature, Starlit Sanctum, or any other cards with a similar ability and you have infinite life! From there, your opponent scoops, or you eventually win in a number of ways.
Traditionally, the tribal combo would run green for creature searches like Living Wish, but I can see you want to try and keep it White and Black. That's okay, because this color combination has plenty of options as well. This is a casual list I brewed up a while ago. We can use it as a base line.

The key components are all there, but the land base should be upgraded based on what you already own, plus what your budget allows. Benevolent Bodyguard should be Mother of Runes, and your discard suite can be upgraded as well. I think something like this could work?

What do you think? Ayli is nice because she acts as a combo piece and a main deck answer to jace all in the same card. I think the win conditions could be better, but infinite damage from the guildmage isn't too bad. I'm not positive on the land count either. The old GW lists used to run Aether Vial, which could be strong here. Edgewalker might be a decent replacement, though, as he serves a similar purpose. Grand Abolisher should also be considered.
Also, Cabal Therapy can be used to target yourself as well, or simply be used to disrupt your opponent. It is probably more useful to you than Inquisition because of this.
The first thing I would do if I really wanted to make the list better would be to change the land base. Since you have done this already, I would start looking at the creatures. Tireless Tracker is an option to consider, as are Kitchen Finks, Eternal Witness, Sidisi, Undead Vizier, and Thrun, the Last Troll. Beyond this and what you have already done, I don't think there is any room for improvements until you start to splash another color.
As far as Pod goes, I am not confident enough in my skills or testing with the card to give you a straight answer. I know that the more options (search targets) you have, the stronger the card is. This makes me think that if you want to use pod, you should splash another color, either red or white. If you want to try it with just the 2 colors I would look at 3 color nic fit pod lists and see if you can find synonymous replacements for the off-color creatures they use as pod targets.

UW Thopters is a great one for sure. Because you use tutors, I would start there when it comes to your sideboard. Look for artifacts and enchantments that can be used to hate out certain strategies. Additional creature hate never hurt anyone, either.
I'm happy to hear you like the new format! I plan to continue to use the change logs, no worries there! My Squandered Resources are certainly something I would like to continue in the future. Currently, life has gotten in the way. Being a teacher means most of my free time is spent grading and lesson planning. Maybe during the summer I will try and continue them.
The "adding more money" section is something I plan to add in the future. As of now, I just wanted to get the deck lists and initial system out to the public. This allows me to see a general reaction, how people like the new format, and fix initial bugs. As time goes on I will continue to add more decks and features.
Thanks for reminding me about my signature! I had completely forgotten.
As a side note, about 20 more decks are scheduled to be added within the coming week. So, be sure to check back in a bit for even more interesting budget lists!
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please comment, email, or whatever! I'm always open!
This guide was written for all budget-minded Legacy players. Decks have been sorted by the general archetypes of Aggro, Control, Combo, and Midrange, as well as by cost. If you have any questions, e-mail me at Spooky386@gmail.com, pm me here, or post here in this thread!
As a note to the mods, if possible I would like this thread stickied and my previous version archived. (thanks!) If the current Google Doc format is not in line with MTGSalvation forum rules please let me know as soon as possible so that I can work to reformat the content into something acceptable.
