standard defined = black(ish) devotion. esper (uw) control. gr (jund) monsters. blue (uw) devotion. red (rw) agro/burn
recently monsters and mono blue have fallen off slightly AND nearly everybody seems to play black or control SO
in a world of non-basics coming into play tapped or shocking, I think the time is ripe once again for...
Ive been on MBD since December, but this list has favorable matchups against public enemy #1 AND #2
as long as I draw only/at least 2-3 mountains every game... I think 18 is perfect
should I play this @ Saturday iq instead of black? does this "go under" tier 1 enough?
I'm trying to find a list for the SCG open this weekend, I like the idea of W/r White Weenie but I was thinking I really want to be using thoughtseize. I'm coming off some moderate success with B/W midrange, which is no longer good enough in the meta (mono black stomps it). When I was playing B/W midrange I noticed that my best hands were the fast ones supported by removal and thoughtseize. If I curved out well I could win before needing obzedat to close the game out. Those fast hands were almost always unbeatable. This got me to thinking about W/b White Weenie. Utilizing the same idea as the old B/W midrange, but lowering the curve and bringing in brave the elements to end the game. Here's my currently untested list:
Unlike B/W midrange where you had dead cards in almost every matchup, this list allows you to be aggressive game 1, and then side into the appropriate cards depending on the matchup (removal and hand disruption).
Let me know what you all think and please give me some constructive criticism. I don't have a lot of time to test the list due to my schedule
My BW/midrange deck also recently shrank into this Orzhov Human deck:
It runs like white weenie w/ thoughtseize and hero's downfall.
High Priest of Penance and Imposing Sovereign trip up aggro;
Banisher Priest and Soldier of the Pantheon typically hose midrange;
and Xathrid Necromancer and Cartel Aristocrat help defeat control.
Sometimes I feel like I'm just playing an inferior aristocratic build from innistrad, but strangely enough this mix of "bad cards" have been matching up pretty well against the devotion esper field lately
Why? Because I get to play Goat token!
This won't win any larger tournament, but it will embarrass your friends on Friday night:)
I wish I had the Elspeths, and I just traded my Blood Barons, but I really like your list. I'm still working out the sideboard: Needles, Evictions, Renounces, Tutors, Gifts, and Bonds...
I love Banisher Priest, but doesn't he only exile when god is creature?
A man after my own heart. Is the scry 1 on Titan's Strength worth the tradeoff of uncounterable pump, more toughness, and (in very rare instances in whick we're probably already losing) a Hill Giant that Rubblebelt Maaka gives us?
I'm currently running a singleton Pyrewild Shaman as a repeatable pump spell and struggling over whether to include burn or more pump stuff or even Goblin Shortcutter or Seismic Stomp as an additional Firefist Striker.
Regarding the SB:
-I like Reckoner but I think he is too slow for this deck. I want my 3 drops to either be Dynacharge or Flames of the Firebrand.
-Peak Eruption seems niche. I'd only side it in on the play to try and stop decks from getting Anger of the Gods mana, and even then, I'd probably just try and play around it by not overcommitting to the board.
Here's what I'd do for a SB:
4 Mizzium Mortars
3 Skullcrack
2 Act of Treason
3 Flames of the Firebrand
3 Frostburn Weird
Skullcrack and Weird for control, Flames and Weird for the mirror, Mortars for pesky stuff like Smiter and Blood Baron (and other midrange), and Act of Treason for midrange and other random decks with big dudes.
Ok so I couldn't decide on the last few cards: maaka or jet, jet or maaka, then I saw titan's strength...
I love pyrewild, been playing him as a 1-of for months now, but I think he belongs in a slightly heavier RDW
I'm swapping shortcutters in for chainwalkers, and stealing your sideboard:)
calvinw: if firefist is good enough then so is shortcutter:)
i swear this thing goldfishes like modern burn, and it can recover from 3rd turn anger of the gods on the play. Seriously, how do you beat this on the draw?
my friend said: multiple chain to rocks
yes, 19 mountains, 16 1-drops, and 16 2-drops
phoenix reckoner chandra purphoros mogis all belong to bigRED
yes, burning tree and ash zealot together - no mutavault then
I couldn't bench either, and odds are decent enough I'll only draw one or the other
I only like to play madcap when i'm sure it's a lightning strike:)
Foundry street denizen is not the weakest 1 drop in this deck
yes, titan's strength (maaka jet), helps get to 20 after anger of the gods nukes the first wave
last outs and strong considerations: phoenix, maaka, reckoner, magma jet, lightning strike, mogis
sideboard with skullcrack peak eruption reckoners maybe a couple mountains lol"

while it's true this combo will never win a larger tourney, you can definitely still embarrass your friends at fnm:)

all this ramp gives us a better chance of holding back an extra land or 2, responding to their doom blade with combo crush ah I can see it now
2 GOOD GR pwalkers with BTW satyr dorks seems so broken but we still have more to see...
I was thinking the same thing btw
no gw pw yet so I think it's a fair speculation
