Definitely not a trap. This card is seeing play in Vintage and is already packing Top8s in Standard.

It's the first week of the new standard and the motto of the first week is always when in doubt, aggro out. All the top 8 was basically aggro decks in a GB shell and Combo saheeli. Let the meta adjust and I'll bet we will see the exact same trajectory that happened with Verdurous Gearhulk. It doesn't change the fact it is a good card, but it's weak to white and blue control cards and Fumigate is very good against the GB builds, which if you look at the deck lists many of the Jeskai and four color saheeli decks had in the side. I feel confident the price is going to go down. Vintage alone isn't going to get this guy to keep his price tag. That requires standard to make him a 4 of in every deck like rofl copter, which just isn't happening.

The thing is, I think he goes in dedicated control decks, too. He scales really well, which means you can drop him early or late whenever you have extra mana. As the control deck does its thing, he provides a perfect mana sink if your opponent doesn't play anything relevant to counter or kill. Eventually he will take over a game.

Also, the G/B deck that used him wasn't really aggro. Ballista was a crucial tool in that deck's control box.

Patrick Sullivan made some relevant comments regarding this exact topic during the last SCG tournament. The good part starts near here:

What's this about Japan Legacy GP being cancelled?

Yes, can someone please elaborate on this point? When was it cancelled?

The most important thing that keeps my interest is probably resonant flavor. This is the type of flavor that is based on concepts outside the game of Magic. For example, many creature types like vampires, werewolves, and dragons are based on real world legends. Seeing well-designed cards with a basis in things I am already familiar with strongly appeals to me, so I am often attracted to blocks with a strong resonant flavor. (However, I do not like ALL sets like this. Kamigawa was a dud for me.)

To keep the feeling of randomness and exploration in games, I find that mini-masters is a tremendous amount of fun. You build a deck using 3 of each basic land and 1 booster pack. Do not look at the cards you open before shuffling. All other rules are the same. A well designed set will provide many interesting games. I've played aggro, control, and even combo in this format. You never know what you will draw next, and that makes it fresh and exciting every game.

I have to agree with the above posters for the reasons they've given. It's a fake, unfortunately.

So how do you folks feel about Fallen Empires and 4 Strip Mines being legal? Seeing White Weenie take down a tournament of that size feels good to me. I generally prefer the Swedish rules, but my mind could be changed...

I opened a box and got a handful of commons with nearly square corners on the top left, when viewed from the front. I didn't check the backs. It is a much smaller defect than what you're showing though.

For those who missed it, at about 11 minutes into the semi finals (Coulvier vs Sharfman), and for the next several minutes, both Patrick and Cedric have some choice words about the format. I don't think I can link to a part of the live stream, but it's definitely interesting to watch once the replay is up. It was apparently bad enough to warrant a few words from their director about the negative tone they have towards the game and Modern as a whole.

The basis of their comments, as best as I can remember, were:
    - This is the format that we have.
    - It may not be the format that we want, but we're basically stuck with it unless we ban an enormous amount of things.
    - You don't get to play what you want to play because that's not what the format lets you do, and it's going to be like this for the foreseeable future.
    - Why play fair when you don't have to?
    - Imagine what Legacy would look like without Force of Will; that's basically what Modern is.
Is this actually all you thought you heard or are you intentionally cherry picking it? In the same discussion they also said that multiple bans isn't what the players would want, that the format being the way it is can be "fine," that you can have fun as long as you know what you're getting yourself into, that the matches are fun to watch, and more.

I think cfusionpm is seriously misrepresenting or simply misunderstood the point Patrick was making. Patrick's comments were NOT a criticism of the format. Rather, he was sending a subtle message to people who bemoan the format and want it to change drastically. And that message was basically: "Stop being unrealistic."

Holy crap I read this thread and said to myself" pffft YEAH RIGHT!" And look at me with egg in my face (sorta) with a Solemn Simulacrum expedition.

lol. Yeah, I feel sorta the same way. I feel Wurmcoil is highly likely for either the next set or, if not there, definitely in a return to New Phyrexia.

EDIT: I mean Wurmcoil will be in the Masterpiece Series, not a Standard-legal reprint.

I don't think there are any power level issues with either of these cards. Solemn Simulacrum is certainly strong, but it was reprinted in Magic 2012 and things were fine.

Likewise, Wurmcoil Engine is just a good card, not a broken one by any stretch. It was overshadowed by a number of other (arguably broken) cards while it was in Standard: Primeval Titan, Stoneforge Mystic, Batterskull, and of course Jace, the Mind Sculptor. I think it would be fine in the current Standard, especially with the number of removal spells that exile instead of kill (Declaration in Stone and Anguished Unmaking mostly).

Having said that, I don't think either are likely to be reprinted now.

Seems good. Instant speed removal might be even more important than usual due to vehicles - an entire class of cards that dodge sorcery speed removal.

I'm going to want the GB and the UG ones for my Leovold, Emissary of Trest EDH deck.

How much do you think these lands will end up costing money wise?

I'd say early hype might put them at $8 to $10, but they will quickly fall to around $2 to $6, depending on which ones see play in Standard.

I've been drifting away from Magic lately, but WotC still does things that make me happy.

I'd been looking forward to this article for a long time. I was and am an ardent detractor of Battle for Zendikar. I think it ranks among the 5 worst sets ever printed.

This article is definitely not as harsh as I would have been. However, it does echo a lot of my sentiments, and that is a reassuring feeling. I do take comfort in the fact that many people apparently feel the same way I do.

Also, I think the article is indicative of why Magic has been so successful over the years. Mark Rosewater and others at WotC actually do listen to the players and make efforts to improve over time. They don't always get it perfect, but when they miss, they at least make an effort to avoid the same mistakes in the future.

  • posted a message on creatures like Fleshbag Marauder, Merciless Executioner, and Slum Reaper when Liliana's Emblem is out
Any creatures sacrificed during the end step will be returned by the emblem's trigger at the beginning of the next end step, no matter if that is yours or your opponent's. The loop is not infinite in the game-drawing sense. However, you can return and sacrifice the Fleshbag Marauder at the beginning of every end step. It will enter the battlefield, trigger, then get sacrificed (if you choose it). Then it and any other creature sacrificed because of its ability will lay in the graveyard until the next end step.
