this does indeed seem in-flavor, and I'm glad to see they're trying to mine the design space of "already injured" mechanic, since so far most of those cards (all red) have been pretty sucky due to their conditionality. Hopefully this pushes the strength of the +1's enough to make it good...
It is a bit vampirish, both in word choice and mechanical history, but with reshuffling color pie it makes perfect sense in RG.
Certainly it will be new cardface. And the design will be better. But how does that play into the woefully bad snowy cards. I hope they actually validate the snowcovered lands, as they've been trying to sweep that whole mechanic under the rug for years now.
Could it really be a ice age block set that just exists by itself, and yet is T2 legal. The only interplay it would have would be with sets ten years old. Maybe it will be a Chronicles white border thing with the first two sets, in the new cardframe, to go with the coldsnap black border set?
nice tiny bit of rumor to whet our palates as the GP theories start to flow like saliva.
I wonder if there are sleeper GP/DIS cards in RAV then are they some kind of even cycle that we could figure out or unbalanced. Maybe it's a block cycle that we'll only be able to see after all three sets....
Has anyone mentioned the missing piece of the big Mirage Oracle update?
That is, the Phasing rules change? We don't know what it's gonna be yet, my Mark Gottlieb (new rules manager) strongly implied that phasing needed some alteration...
I like a lot of the creature type moves, but some of the creature types, while understandable that they're trying to "streamline" the creature types, are somewhat irksome. e.g. meerkat > mongoose (meerkats are real things, and that's the picture); melesse spirit > spirit (could've just added spirit unstead of un-angelizing it); harbor guardian > gargoyle (could've added gargoyle instead of un-guardianing it); abyssal hunter minion > human assassin (too, loses a perfectly useful minion type).
By changing all these without reprinting cardboard versions, I think the casual type oners will be suffering a bit...
I am so not surprised at the immediate and vitriololic negative reaction to this.
Since it doesn't take up a card slot, at the very worst these are just silly. And most likely there will be some people who collect them, either just because they're addicted to the notion of collecting, or more reasonably, because they like the idea of having Kai tokens or whatever.
I completely disagree that these will litter the floors at the prerelease, because it'll only take a few people who want to scoop 'em up. And I'd be willing to bet that some of you in the huge majority who are knee-jerkily ridiculing the whole concept will be keeping them in your binders in the months to come once any small secondary market emerges. If that becomes you, you should be honest and where a sticker that states you'll be more patient in judging WotC's future changes.
Personally, ANYTHING that has a chance of bringing more people into the game is a good thing, as longevity is the most important thing to keeping this game valuable and viable for generations.
dos centavos,
Colors are all confirmed. (Your guesses are right though)
See the 'compiled info thread'.
We will get further definite confirmation soon from WoTC too, I'm sure.
Yes, I'm sure we'll have wotc confirmation soon, but it felt rather odd that the Feature article didn't just explicitly SAY what the colors were. It's as if they are planning on leaking it out instead of announcing it....But the combos are so clear they should have just listed them.
I'm disappointed they are not new to us, but the Feature Article did have some intel:
the names of the six other guilds, with my (pretty obvious, methinks) guesses as to their colors:
GRUUL are R and G
RAKDOS are R and B
SIMIC are U and G
IZZIT are R and U
ORZHOV are W and B
AZORIUS are W and U
I agree that it is unlikely they will use other-plane names and actually reprint "llanowar" or "kjeldoran" or whatever. But what about "Loxodon" on the partial spoiler? is that confirmed or just an indicator name like ">>>>>>>" to represent an elephant cleric? I would be very surprised if the Loxodons made it to Ravnica. But maybe they're starting a new crossover-block things like that....
My Favorite card is Swords To Plowshares.
It is obviously very powerful, which is important.
But it also has the best flavor, and a resonant name that means something wonderful in the real world.
Homerun!
