The End of an Era
  • posted a message on MTGOTraders/Cape Fear Games discussion thread
I recently sold my MTGO collection to MTGOTraders and I got exactly what I expected after dealing with them for years: prompt, reliable, and fair service.

You can trust pros like Heath and Gustavo. If I ever return to the game, I'll be sure to look them up.

I like the Norin-esque idea, Naya supports it very well.

One of Hazezon's neat tricks is to use Shields of Velis Vel with his exile trigger to exile someone's army.

Neither Beatdown nor Deckmasters is online. They only released actual blocks and their own Masters Edition sets retroactively, not special sets such as those two.

The oldest core set printed online is 7th.

Mirage was not the first block released online, IPA was.

I plan on trying this out. May as well spend the 4 Phantom Points I somehow acquired, and this fits the bill perfectly.

Am I correct in assuming that these events also count toward the MTGO player rewards event promo? I'd like to snag a Desertion while I'm at it!

  • posted a message on The Tactical Scoop
    Another MTGO player here.

As others have said, it comes with the territory that people scoop, tactical or otherwise. I tend to give people a lot of leeway if they scoop without a fuss and it doesn't seem spite-fueled, after all RL does get in the way sometimes and it always takes priority.

That said, I really hate when people scoop for other reasons. If you're going to sit down to play the game, then you should finish it without being a petulant poor sport about the outcome.

There are a couple caveats though:
This only applies to multiplayer when more than 2 players are actually alive in the game.
The losing players can agree to concede simultaneously when a game-ending combo or attack phase is happening and nobody has an out.

The reason scooping is fine in duel magic is because it has no real effect. You lose faster, big deal. In multiplayer magic it has many potential effects depending on the board state, regardless of whether it's mid-attack or not. The simple fact that you provide other players with a potential target for their attacks and spells is something that should not change until you've lost.

  • posted a message on [[MCD]] Maralen/Mindcensor
My favorite Maralen combo/lock is Teferi->Maralen->Teferi's Puzzle Box. Each piece supports the next so well, and the whole thing can be started by a simple Mystical Teachings. This won't work for your deck obviously, but perhaps you can combine elements in your colors to do something similar.

There are the obvious flash options like Winding Canyons and Vedalken Orrery to get Maralen out just before your turn. Doran's colors are particularly good at graveyard recursion, so you could also try rezzing Maralen from your yard at instant speed or during your upkeep to avoid being last to tutor. Chainer, Coffin Queen, Nighteyes the Desecrator, and Debtors' Knell come to mind.

So you can be the first to use Maralen's tutor, and you can grab the Aven Mindcensor to make it difficult to answer, but I don't see a way to really lock the table down like Teferi does. Perhaps that's a good thing though, most people hate the combo when it achieves a nearly unbreakable lock.

I'm glad they realized how bad it was and got outside help, this is progress.

  • posted a message on [[MTGO]] Swords to Plowshares new expansion symbol
luminum can is correct, it is the symbol from the Commander precons that were only available for MTGO before the other 5 were released. There was a Rubinia Soulsinger deck and a Xira Arien deck.

    Here are the decklists.

Should the Community team somehow manage to vanquish the totally dominant and unquestionably powerful Wizards team, Magic Online players who logged in between Friday, August 30, at 10 a.m. Pacific and Saturday, August 31, at 7 p.m. Pacific, during the Community Cup, will be granted a premium foil Sliver Queen promo and Rakdos Cackler FNM promo on September 4.

The promos arrive on September 4.

  • posted a message on [[MCD]] Kresh vs Sek'Kuar
I prefer Sek'Kuar, he's easily one of my favorite commanders. You have a lot of explosive options with him, stax or not. If swinging for general damage is something you really love, just pack Fallen Ideal. It's pretty amazing tech for Sek'Kuar: a self-recurring free sac outlet that gives your general evasion and a pump, I'm never sad to see it.

Regarding hate from your table, I would never hate on a Kresh player more than Sek'Kuar. Maybe that comes from playing the latter myself, but Kresh never really scares me the way Sek'Kuar does. Sek'Kuar is a strong combo general that can utilize many different types of wincons, but does so while building an early board presence with resilience to boot. Have I mentioned I love Sek'Kuar? Smile

I'll probably start buying paper precons if this goes through and you don't lose the paper cards. Seems like a good way for me to get back into paper while maintaining my online collection, which is something I've wanted to do for a while.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Dune yet. The greatest sci-fi book ever written deserves better than the Lynch version and the SyFy series.
