Honestly, I never played a game that was that serious back then. People weren't as competitive and didn't scrutinize the rules nearly as much as they do today. I have never seen a card lost to ante that wasn't immediately given back out of good sportsmanship...except to my older brother (because that's what brothers do!). So, I think the answer to your question is: this level of rules hawking was unprecedented and frankly would have been decided by players, spectators, and "judges" (who kind of also didn't exist back then) entirely by commonsense and decency.
I've been thinking about making the dual lands the only proxies in my cube.
Collector's Edition/International Edition, my friend. I sold all my revised duals and turned them into a set of NM CE duals & power (give or take a few bucks). You won't regret it. They look awesome in sleeves...can't even tell they're square-bordered.
If Phyrexian Metamorph is copying Batterskull and someone plays phyrexian revoker, can that person name metamorph to stop the metamorph copy from activating a Batterskull ability? (Matters because both players have a Batterskull, but one is just a copy with phyrexian metamorph)
I proxy my expensive cards, so WE MADE IT, WE OUT HERE
Activating a Library of Alexandria IRL for the first time ever was such a decadent feeling. I highly recommend it!
On a side note, once I finish my 360, I'm probably going to continue my 93-94 cube project which is about 40% complete....good thing I already have power/duals, Moat, Library, and a few hands full of other cards that I nabbed before the birth of the 93-94 format which skyrocketed the prices.
Like any cube manager, I've been keeping tabs on how much $$$ I needed to "finish" my cube (in my case, getting specific versions of each card in my list) since the day I created it (nearly 10 years ago!). By "finish", I mean to have every single card in its final iteration in the physical cube and only needing to add newly printed cards or make changes as dictated by my design decisions. Thought it would be cool for other people to see where other cube managers are in their progress, too.
I started my cube as a so-called "Dragon Cube" and it was 720 cards. As I realized the sheer size of this cube was untenable, I eventually cut to 540, and again to 360.
Cube Size: 360
Powered: Yes
Progress: 92.8% complete (334/360 cards pimped--283 foil/promos, 51 non-foil power/duals/old sets/non-foil printings only/etc)
Cost Remaining: $3,070.00
Biggest 3 Cards Needed: Foil Rishadan Port, Full-Art Mutavault, EMA Foil Force of Will
UPDATE: I didn't sleep on the couch and, in fact, we had a really good night and even played more magic.
"It doesn't go away within the phase unless I use it", was how I would frame my answer in an actual tournament. Since she didn't specify the timeframe, I "assumed" she meant "does it go away right now".
It boils down to both people being too vague--one due to ignorance and the other exploiting the other's ambiguity. I wholly accept that in the lowest REL, a judge would back us up.
From what I gather, I was deceptive and exploitative while not technically breaking any rules. But, because it was kitchen table with my wife, I should have let it slide...but didn't because its kill or be killed at the 6jerfz family table and I didn't come to lose. \m/
For some context: we once were tied, 3-0, in the final round of FNM playing against each other. If we drew the game, we'd have gotten X prize packs. If we played it out and one of us won and one lost, we would get X - Y packs (essentially a few less packs). Rather than draw the game so we'd go home with more to show, wifey decided to play. Like I said....we're a bit cutthroat with each other!
My wife and I were playing this morning at breakfast and this was the scenario:
I had a table full of guys and an island and Library of Alexandria untapped and she had nothing besides a bunch of lands (including Rishadan Port).
She activates port to tap my Island, so I float U from it.
She then asks "Does that go away?"
Because she didn't specify when and didn't mention going into combat or her next main phase, I said "no".
She casts Wrath of God and I Memory Lapse it with the floating U and my library.
She scoffs and gets mad and says I cheated her.
At worst, I was being a dick by not answering her with a more thorough answer to her question. The way I see it is that because she didn't specifically ask when my floating U would "go away", I was under no obligation to tell her the rules of Magic nor to give her strategic advice or to hint at what she needed to do (e.g. had I said "mana pools empty at the end of each phase", it would have given her a clue as to what to do) only to answer her poorly worded question with a vague, yet not technically incorrect answer.
I admit, what I did was exploitative in that I was exploiting her 1) ignorance of the rules and 2) vague wording. I would 100% have done this in a tournament as well.
So...can some rules gurus please tell me how this exact situation would have panned out in a tournament? And for her sake, can you guys also tell me how much of a dick move that was to do at the kitchen table? I admit...I'm super competitive, but my wife has no mercy for me, so I must crush her with all my might.
Here's a good tip from someone who has played both: play the UB version.
RB version's worst MU is drawing your opening hand. Seriously. I lost more games because I had to mulligan down too far because my hand was abysmal than those that I lost due to other factors. Just play the UB version.
They both look beyond "Played" and in the realm of "Damaged". Missing chunks of cardboard/art is no bueno. These probably wouldn't even be tournament legal.
Yeah! I'm traveling to Paris, Barcelona, and Ibiza and then later in the year I'm going to Iceland. It would have been awesome to make some connections ahead of this trip.
I live in Los Angeles, CA if anyone is planning a trip here in the future!
Need a quick answer! Thanks!
