If they include stuff like Food Chain and a bunch of other staples for Commander, Legacy and maybe move the needle a bit on Modern (they could have put in the Leylines, for example) it might be worth it. In the end, I sure as heck won't be getting a box and my pal that generally get a box of Modern Masters won't be either. Since the price is prohibitive to the casual buyer, it looks like UMA is basically a "thank you" to big sotres like StarCity, ChannelFireball, that "jerk" Rudy and Wal Mart, who will have them at a discount.
We'll see tomorrow, but I'm not super confident in the commons or uncommons, which will need to be essentially all hits for these packs to be worth it.
(Less confident because very few of the people that design these sets actually play Magic competitively...but I'm guessing that's because they'd have the equivalent of insider info so they can't do that. )

My biggest hope is for some needed EDH reprints, like Three Visits, Council's Judgment, Tooth & Nail and such.
Not betting the farm on those, but 3visits would be an amazing boon.

They come out with ANOTHER lottery set???
WHERE IS THE LOGIC??
If people are buying this *****... You deserve to buy the next one at 400$ then.
It depends on EV. If the box is literally full of format staples, with a few small duds (Wildwood for example) with an expected foil per pack, then you'll likely get your $15 per pack worth. There will be tons of these opened. Big stores will just crack them and re-sell like crazy. So enjoy your $20 Urborgs and $25 Creeping Tar Pits and $75 Liliana of the Veil for a while, then the prices will creep back up.
By no means is this an amazing deal, but it will sell if there are any amount of needed staples in here.
Nov 5, 2018I get what you're saying. They can reprint Modern staples in stuff like Battlebond and so on as well.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Unfortunately, Booster delivery is their preferred mode, so unless Modern Event Decks return, it's going to be a recessive format.
I absolutely empathize as I dip my feet into Modern every few years, and my preferred deck is $800 or so, which isn't a small amount. In this case though perhaps they'll add Modern to Magic Arena, or just trickle stuff back into Standard. It's not great, but this is where we are.
Nov 5, 2018There are 14 other cards in the pack, and this is virtually guaranteed to have one foil per pack.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
If they put a high amount of playable staples it will be fine. I'll gladly pay $16-$18 CDN for one pack to get something I can just flip for value, etc.
It will be fine.
Nov 4, 2018This is a nice perk for those that missed their purchase, but hoping that these find their way to a Masters set of some sort.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Nearly all of them need a reprint, and $ are available if this is even a new Hasbro-only sales thing.
Not sure how they would do this if they are "box toppers" for a set, getting a Balefire Dragon instead of a Demonic Tutor or Engineered Explosives = :(.
Nov 1, 2018I don't get what this is supposed to be.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Generally if you copy a critter (say you copied a Royal Assassin), you could just use spare copies of that card or a die to indicate the number of copies next to the copied critter.
Having to scribble out "Royal Assassin" "Creature - Human Assassin" "T,:Deestroy target tapped creature" and "1/1" seems like a massive timesink.
I'd rather have tokens for stuff that doesn't have it, like the 3/3 Spirits from Oyobi, or the 3/1s with Haste from that legendeary orc, iirc.

Glowing Anemone for extra fun.
Oh, and Teferi, Hero of Dominaria with Nexus of Fate, for more interaction.
Oct 8, 2018MagicFest is actually a festival of prestidigitators and they've notified Wizards as such.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Edin Magic Festival has trademarked their event as Magic Fest, and are now in touch with Hasbro apparently.
Overall, these changes don't affect me except that I can win a PT invite as a regular event and then trade it for cash and so on.

I bought a box of Dominaria for Firesong & Sunspeaker (and the set was way cool) but I had not bought a box since...Oath of the Gatewatch (it was given to me by the store for writing) and the one with Hidden Treasures prior. Basically, I only buy boxes if there's a gimmick or the set is a reprint mine (split wit ha friend for Masters).
I do buy singles. Lots of them. I paid $25 for Revised and 4th Ed basic lands and another $10 for sleeves for my 2HG partner and I Saturday (Team "Revised Basics" needs its landbase ) and I'm probably going to get a bunch of other janky singles soon (Ensnaring Bridge, Lady Zhurong, Warrior Queen, Riding the Dilu Horse #2 for Jugan, the Rising Star EDH) and a new custom playmat...I mean, I like watching Modern but it's too annoying getting all the fetchlands to play a format I participate in once or twice a year.
I don't think MTG is going down the toilet, but they do need to find a way to keep reprints rolling while keeping the game fresh for Standard players.
Guilds of Ravnica Mythic is a fine idea. It got me interested in SDCC foils and I'll be getting singles of Mythic and some others for my decks,
I mean, there are going to be a ton of these Mythic boxes in circulation, so waiting and grabbing off Ebay should be like picking a plum off your favourite tree.

May 1, 2018Well, people saying Legends is a bad set...it's not really playable in limited or sealed. A lot of the creatures are very expensive to play. When your best limited beater is Thunder Spirit at 1WW and that's a rare card, yikes.Posted in: Articles
I do have a casual Jasmine Boreal deck that's based on destroying evil, peace prevailing, nature and the odd Shuriken, because I had thought for a long time she held a shuriken in her hand, whereas someone pointed out that she's holding a snowflake. Cards such as Fyndhorn Pollen, Northern Paladin, Southern Paladin, Penatarch Paladin, Cleanse, Shuriken, the meld Gisela and Bruna and so on. YOu get the idea, it's not very good but it's fun!
Legends is one of my fave all-time sets, but I always sucked at pack wars. My best card an Elder Land wurm and his? A Mana Drain lol...
