    No?
Arema is an excellent platform. They are adding cosmetics finally, so it's going to be super sweet as of the Mrach update. Grin

These can be built on Arena, and played to your heart's content in the limited time they'll still be playable. It's just not worth to buy and spend more money on upgrading them to full power, IMO.

This is pretty much it. I think Wizards is missing the mark on this product. It should be released mid-Standard or early Standard, to give people an alternative route to get the singles and decks they need. For the white weenie deck, you'd need to get the Loxodons and maybe the Azorious lands if you want to splash those.
These are not terrible value by any means, but it's just a little late in the game for some of them.

Haha I have that same hat/toque, amazing!
I subbed, your channel is fun to watch.
I mostly watch MTG GOldfish becaue I huge fan of Seth, oooooooooooooooooootherwise known as Saffron Olive, and Tomer and then.

I watch MTG on YouTube for the professional stuff like the big events, and just to kill time. Oh, I like Rudy at Alpha Investments because he's louche and reminds me of a former store owner I knew. Smile

The value on Arena is time and enjoyment.

On Arena I don't have to travel over an hour to get to a LGS and sit on a hard chair.
On Arena I don't have to concede to someone because I don't like them and don't want to spend 50 minutes staring at their face, pretending to be sportsmanlike.
On Arena I can drop a bunch of $ and get full decks with tons of Mythics.
On Arena there is no toxicity because you can't chat or anything, if they spam Emotes you can mute them.
On Arena I get stuff for free every day, and I can save the Gold to get more stuff later. Right now I have 30,000 gold saved, so by the time M20 comes out in July or whenever, or War of the Spark in April, I'll be able to get 30+ packs and have a new deck build immediately.
On Arena I don't need sleeves or dice, or a judge.
On Arena I can get a game any time I want...yes you can do this with Cockatrice or whatever, but I never liked those clients.

Arena is beastly. Once they add cosmetic or Season rewards (Avatars for finishing at Mythic, Gold, Platinium, Diamond, Siver, Bronze...) the game will be unstoppable.

Heck, I sold all my paper junk except for a Commander deck or two because I just don't want to play with people unless one of my best friends that I like is there, and he's there only once in a while because he lives two hours away (or less) in MTL.

Gah, Cryptic is the literal worst.

They are. Champions Online has been in maintenance mode for ages, basically, and City of Heroes was super sweet but got shut down, sadly.
I think their Star Trek game is pretty ok, but man, passing hard here. Not looking forward to lootboxes and keys on every street corner.

So. When can we a expect commander B&R list update? Can't wait to see paradox engine go.

Based on their usual shedule and assuming nothing weird happens - monday, april 29th should be the next announcement.

Yep. I am expecting the usual "Commander is in a great place right now. Various playgroups have different experiences but #NewSet has added some tolls and flavour to improve everyone's experience." And not a whole lot of news from the newly formed Council.

Standard is pretty sweet right now. You can play all sorts of cool decks and win some matches. I am...somewhat concerned at Dominaria and Ixalan rotating out, since we'll lose some multilands and staple planeswalkers, but we'll see.

Man, I'd definitely use some wildcards to get this version on Arena, wow.
    Nice promo, good work here.

Not a big fan of this unless there's a TPK of all planeswalkers and we go a few years without any of them in Standard.
Or give us something like this: "Planar Rod, 2. Artifact - Abilities of Planeswalkers may not be activated. Exile all emblems. Players may not gain emblems, use an emblem's ability or be the target of an emblem's ability."

Immortal Sun reprint would be fine, but shave a bunch of abilities and just make a harsh hoser = better.

Seems like a positive change, but I do not want this in Commander, people will just mull nonstop till they get their combo pieces.

Fetchlands are needed, as are Goblin Guides and a variety of other staples. Turn this into a Conspiracy-type product with a focus on Modern and you could have a winner.
Hoping Arena gets stuff as well, like maybe a re-release of some older sets to support the oft-surmised new format?

I am running a Dragons (mono-Red splash white for Justice Strike) deck in upper goal and I am soaring through matches. I have met perhaps one mono-red, most matches are Sultai, Esper, Gruul, and the occasional Dimir. It's fun times in the dragon's lair. Smile

Here is the list I am using, seemed fun and it is.

    4 Clifftop Retreat (DAR) 239
    2 Spit Flame (M19) 160
    4 Shivan Fire (DAR) 142

  • posted a message on Are that many people really spending money on this game?
I have spent on the game and will continue doing so. I am very close to a full set of Guilds of Ravnica from just drafting, opening packs on Sundays and spending gems and gold on packs. Because of this, my Vault opens perilously quickly; I am 70% to my next Vault opening and I opened it just two weeks ago. The key is having as many sets of uncommons and commons in a set as you can, since drafting gets you tons of this stuff, which goes to the Vault.

With the new duplicate protection program, I am finally finishing my sets of shocklands, Arclight Phoenixes and taking the hit by getting copies of Citywide Bust and other chaffy rares as well. It's worth it in the end, since I'll be ready when Arena Eternal arrives next fall. In the meantime, I have a ton of decks to play with too, and a modest amount of wildcards (5 Mythic, 0 Rare (I use these constantly...), 50 Uncommon and 4 Common). I've managed to build mono-red, green Stompy, various Boros builds and I think a Mardu and Thousand Year Storm and Izzet Drakes. That's from playing two or three months.

Try to build my Golgari deck in real life here in Ottawa? YEah $45 CDN for a Carnage Tyrant...pass. I love that I get to play Standard and goofy formats whenever I want. It's a lot of fun and I'm learning about Standard along the way! Grin

The people seem pretty cool overall, though I think I've only heard of Josh-Lee Kwai, and he's pretty sweet so I'm glad to have him on board.

Overall though, this won't mean much unless there are changes to the banned list (hello abundant tutors and fast mana rocks) and as that does not look to be happening at any time, and I expect to see "No changes" in permanence on each update, I'll keep my Commander playing to a minimum and focus on Duel Commander, MTG Arena and building my sweet, sweet Mirage-Ice Age Block 5th Ed Standard Cube. Grin

(I know that sounded a little snarky, so I'll re-forumulate a bit here. It's great to have new and different voices. It has been needed. But if overall the banned list stays the same, I'm not sure what the Advisory Committee is outside of a public outreach forum, or perhaps a Comms group to get the message out there in a timely fashion. It cannot hurt, I suppose, but I'm unclear about its purpose, even after reading Sheldon's take on the topic. I'd like a really thorough explanation about what kind of Commander these players play (any of them cutthroat combo players? Any of them on a strict budget? Any of them just build casual clunky fun/theme decks? Any of them online only players?) and I hope to hear from them here, on the forums, as well as the official Commander forums. Welcome all! @Sheldon, glad to see you back and sorry to hear about your family. Please know that we really do love hearing from you here and appreciate everything you and the rest of the RC members do for us.

So, does anyone else have a sleep deprivation from staying up too late playing the new set on Arnea?

I do, but I nearly have enough shocks and buddy lands to finally build a Standard Prismatic deck for when the reset hits next week.
Condolences on the family issues as well, @Sheldon.

  • posted a message on B&R Update: Ironworks Banned, Hada Freeblade, Spatial Controtion, Circle of Flame banned in Pauper.
    Announcement Date: January 21, 2019

    Modern:

    Krark-Clan Ironworks is banned.

    Effective Date: January 25, 2019

Magic Online Effective Date: January 21, 2019 (see below)

The list of all banned and restricted cards, by format, is here.

    Next B&R Announcement: March 11, 2019

"Games with Krark-Clan Ironworks can often involve excessively arcane rules interactions using mana ability timing windows, the understanding of which are necessary for players to agree on the game state. This can create a barrier to entry to Modern for players playing against the deck and to those who would feel obligated to play with it because of its strong win rate. We're sensitive to community feedback that the combination of polarized matchups, complex interactions, and long turns can lead to unenjoyable gameplay and viewing experiences."

Also keeping an eye on Mox Opal and Ancient Stirrings, but not taking action yet:

"Ancient Stirrings and Mox Opal represent two categories of cards that R&D keeps a careful eye on: card selection and fast mana. One factor we consider is that Ancient Stirrings, unlike more general card selection spells like Ponder and Preordain, brings deckbuilding restrictions. When we examine the effect of powerful cards, we consider whether they are increasing or decreasing the number of viable decks in the environment. In the current state of the metagame, the build-around nature of Ancient Stirrings supports decks that look very different from a simple collection of the strongest rate cards, and that otherwise may not exist. The recent resurgence of a new generation of Amulet Titan decks is a good example of this. Mox Opal is a similar case. In addition to showing up in high-profile decks like Hardened Scales, we also see Mox Opal enabling a variety of more fringe artifact synergy decks. As a category, we think these are generally healthy provided they appear in small doses and have reasonable win rates. As Modern stands, our metagame data does not indicate a need to impact the other Ancient Stirrings or Mox Opal decks.

Bear in mind that this is based on the current state of the metagame, and that Ancient Stirrings and Mox Opal are not being given a free pass in perpetuity. While we have no current plans to take action against these two cards, we'll continue to monitor the health of the environment and the strength of decks that use them. If the metagame reaches a point where we determine these cards are doing more to suppress archetype diversity than enable it, we will certainly revisit this discussion. At this time, we're choosing the surgical ban against Krark-Clan Ironworks itself and avoiding "splash damage" against other archetypes.

    A Note on Pauper

We've heard some recent discussion amongst the Pauper community about the potentially problematic interaction between Gush and Foil, the latter of which was recently added to the environment through Ultimate Masters. While our metagame data indicates that taking action at this time would be premature, we'll watch the format as decks adjust to play with and against this combination. We appreciate continued community feedback on this topic through discussion on forums, in articles, and on social media.
    A Note on Magic Online

With today's announcement, Magic Online will debut a new system to handle card bans while the system is live. At 10 a.m. PT today, Krark-Clan Ironworks will be banned on Magic Online while the system is live. This neither requires a downtime where players are removed from Magic Online while we make a ban list change, nor a system where we need to prematurely end the League and create a new version.

Players who have the card in their decks will be automatically removed from any Leagues they are participating in and their entries will be reimbursed. Prizes earned at the point of removal will be granted manually, though the results of any active League matches at that time will not count.

Players who are waiting in a queue for a tournament to begin will be removed from that queue and will have their entry reimbursed. Players participating in a non-League tournament that is already underway will not be affected and may finish the event normally.

This new system lets us make changes as soon as possible while only impacting players who are using banned cards.

In addition to the announced ban, Hada Freeblade, Spatial Contortion, and Circle of Flame will be banned in Pauper to correct a format issue where they are currently legal in the format despite only appearing at common as promotional cards. These bans will use the same process outlined above.

(Whinge: Whence the UW changes since it's got more T8 finishes? Exeunt Cryptic Command and Settle the Wretckage sometime? :p)
