Are DDs good anymore? Are they worth buying? Whenever I see an announcement for a DD, I don't get excited. Haven't been excited for one of these since Elspeth v Tezzeret.
Here's hoping DFCs don't make a return. Can't stand 'em. Although, I will take the flavor of Innistrad returning, thank you. Bring on the tricorns again!!!
What about mixing Voltron equipment strategy with tokens strategy with Zurgo as general? Run cards like Sigil of Valor that abuse having a swarm of tokens out? The problem then becomes that Wrath effects and Pestilence cards would make less sense with Zurgo. Or would it? As others have mentioned before, I could chuck and sacrifice creatures to deal damage before one of those cards goes off, right?
I love your Alesha and her Aristocrats EDH deck in your link. Awesome, awesome deck!
Thanks! Some further suggestions: Valorous Stance - Its both removal and can save Zurgo from destruction (can make for a high impact play on someone else's turn as it's very unexpected). Death Pits of Wrath - Zurgo is immune to it on your turn and it means that you can kill every creature with earthquake for just 1R. Soul Link on Zurgo can gain you a lot of life over the course of a game. Pestilence effects (Pyrohemia / Crypt Rats) - can also be pretty good, as you can often keep Zurgo on the board.
So. How is this the ONLY Eldrazi-themed Animar deck listed on a forum search for "Animar Eldrazi" after BFZ released? There are SO many goodies to put in! There are more Eldrazi to throw in and replace other non-Eldrazi cards on your list, OP. I'm excited for you. I may have to make the deck myself. Void Winnower to be even more annoying playing Animar. From Beyond for search POWER!!! Conduit of Ruin and Herald of Kozilek for further consistency. Titan's Presence for removal. Desolation Twin for da value! Shrine of the Forsaken Gods, man. (Side note: Why is Shrine not Legendary? Four of those in Modern could be really, really cool.)
This looks like a ton of fun to play in EDH. And just think, we're getting more Eldrazi goodness in the next smaller set of the BFZ mini-block.
I too am looking to get Zurgo out as soon as possible and trying to make room for more ramp cards to smooth out my early game. I'm considering adding a few more lands in addition to the 35 I'm running now. That or some more mana rocks. I fully recommend Talisman of Indulgence because if you get an opening hand with that and Sol Ring, you're almost guaranteed a turn 2 Zurgo. I'm also looking in to adding the Boros Signet, Rakdos Signet, and Orzhov Signet. Another thing I'm trying to trade for is Tithe and Land Tax, those cards as well as Knight of the White Orchid, Weathered Wayfarer and Gift of Estates are why I've centered my mana fixing in white and play more plains than swamps or mountains.
I also suggest that you might want to test out Sunforger as an excellent repeat tutor for spot removal and all around toolbox card.
[quote from="Sinis »" url="http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/commander-edh/642552-mardu-deck-strategies?comment=4"]...I'm pretty sure they are talking about Zurgo Helmsmasher.
As far as Lifeline goes, it has been errata'd to say "Whenever a creature dies, if another creature is on the battlefield, return the first card to the battlefield under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step." so it doesn't work quite the way it is printed.
OP here. This is exactly what I am looking for. When I originally posted, I was thinking of Alesha or Zurgo. I have seen Alesha decks, think they're awesome, but want something more than token-ETB-sac gameplay. Your idea of running Zurgo with sweepers and otherwise taking advantage of the "on your turn" clause on the text is the "new" I want out of a WBR strategy. So Voltron Zurgo is what I am looking at now. Equipment. I want to see Zurgo wielding numerous swords to smash the helms of those other generals out of play and back into the command zone. Any suggestions for other equipment to run? Sweeper suggestions other than Wrath of God and Damnation? Chain Reaction? It would potentially work well with my FOIL Repercussion. Other Earthquake-like suggestions?
Lifeline I have always wanted to play, and I would still play it even with the errata. It makes more sense to go with Alesha. Although, it would be cool to see my Mogg Maniac potentially return to play after flinging some massive damage from a red X spell.
Thanks for the other card suggestions. Thanks for the comprehensive response!
WBR is quite a suitable for a range of combo builds such as Worldgorger Dragon, different infinite loops with Reveillark, Karmic Guide, Sun Titan / Fiend Hunter, Kiki-Jiki etc. With GWB it probably has the greatest variety of removal, both spot and mass removal and for creatures as well as all non-creature permanents. As others have mentioned, RWB can also work well with punisher style cards. Stax decks also work well, particularly with Alesha since she can bring back a range of hatebears such as Magus of the Moon and Containment Priest.
Overall the color combination is quite versatile in EDH, and as long as you don't have to deal with too many combo decks (particularly those that can only be responded to with counterspells), it should work well in most groups.
I love your Alesha and her Aristocrats EDH deck in your link. Awesome, awesome deck!
Now I want to make a deck with him. Thanks!
I was looking at its design, too. She won't get ping-ed off so easily. I just wish she also afforded a +3/+3 boost to keep the luck going around.
She will be going into my Zurgo Helmsmasher EDH oh so soon.
.....So how about adding Breath of Darigaaz?
Pestilence effects are PERFECT for Zurgo. Wow.

Do you run Grim Monolith or Mox Opal?
