Are there seriously no elderly people in red cards???

There's Kumano, Master Yamabushi (another master!). I think he looks old, but also hard.

    cunning bandit
    Iizuka the ruthless
    purphoros, god of the forge

YES! I knew there had to be old red dude out there! I may have to run these guys JUST for the flavor. Old, wrinkly flavor, but flavor nonetheless.

I might do that. I really want to stick with Jeskai colors, but if green were included I could run Lambholt Elder. What a beast, right?!

Red is really more of a "live fast, die hard" kind of color. You may be able to find some elders on red cards... getting toasted.

I realize this is being nit-picky, but Old Man of the Sea is a Djin, not a man. Djins have been known to join the Jeskai, though, so maybe it isn't that big of a deal.

    Here's a few more:

The Antiquities version of Sage of Lat-Nam is much more old manish than this one.

You know, I saw that too about Old Man being a djinn, which, as you say, isn't such a bad thing considering the Jeskai have djinns among their ranks. And I wish I was going for an artifact sub-theme after seeing the Antiquities version of Sage of Lat-Nam.

Izzet Chronarch will definitely be included. I suppose he is the closest I will get to seeing an old dude on a red card.

Mother of Runes looks 40-50ish to me, not exactly geriatric. I would recommend a UWR search for the name Elder. Seems to be plenty of options. Smile

You're right about Mother. Although, with the wrinkles, I would argue that she is definitely on the 50s -side of your range. I'm still gonna include her.

Both arts for Impulse have geezers on them.

Definitely gonna throw this card in the deck. I like the FtV one better. What do you think?

Fo' sho'! I just have to FIND one.

For being a game about magic, the art direction tends to go out of there way to avoid the gray bearded old wizard.

    Barrin, Master Wizard
    Martyr of Sands
    Wizened Cenn
    Academy Rector
    Geist of Saint Traft
    Enlightened Tutor

I'd also take a look at the card art for Portal Three Kingdoms and all of Kamigawa block, since both there stories tended to have more elderly characters.

I think they go out of their way because of Magic's target audience. But I don't plan on playing bingo at my retirement home. I'm gonna keep all of my EDH decks and spank the young orderlies out of some candy bars!

Barrin may have to go in the deck. I've always wanted to have a reason to run him since Saga came out.

    Who's gonna be your general?

In Fate Reforged, Ugin is obviously super old, but no living man he is. Refocus has an old man and works well with Jeskai strategy, and Serene Master fits your bill perfectly.

Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest will probably be my general. And i love ALL of your suggestions to include in my deck. Refocus will work flavor-wise for my deck's theme considering who I want to populate it with. And I can't wait to play Serene Master in EDH. How good is he in the format?

    There's Lighthouse Chronologist.
Patron Wizard, Wizard Mentor, Lullmage Mentor and Venerated Teacher... I guess teaching takes a toll on you.
Academy Researchers look like they have tenure.
Magus of the Unseen is quite the silver fox.
The original illustration for Archivist is an old guy paging through a book.
There's a lot of "old masters": Master Healer, Master Apothecary, Odric, Master Tactician, Serene Master.
The old lady on Enlightened Tutor is married to the old man on Land Tax.

I will definitely run the Chronologist. I've always wanted to play him. He probably won't last on the battlefield, but I will chance it.

Teaching does take its toll. I am a teacher myself! Hopefully I look much better than these dudes do when I get there. I really dig the white wizard card suggestions. I want to run Wizard Mentor JUST for the artwork.

What are some cards in Jeskai colors that feature old people in their art? I want to beat face with geriatric power! So far I have included in the deck Mother of Runes, Jeskai Elder, and Lighthouse Chronologist. What are some other cards that feature old people in their art?

What are cards in Jeskai colors that feature old people in their art? I want to build a deck that smacks opponents around with geriatric power! So far I have Mother of Runes, Beloved Chaplain, and Jeskai Elder. What other white, blue, or red cards have old people ready to kick butts in their artwork?

I'm a fan of Words of Wind in combination with constellation enchantments from Journey Into Nyx.

Would you consider changing your general choice to Ruhan of the Fomori? You could still run Anax & Cymede in the deck. This would give you more access.

Thanks for the clarification. The MtG Top 8 site seems like an excellent resource. I've been looking in various sites at essentially the same data. It's nice to see one site that can serve as a place of reference. Thanks again!

I am ignorant for the most part about what fetches are played the most so I have to ask: How do you know exactly? I thought Polluted or Scalding Tarn were played the most. I just don't know for sure. How do you figure this kind of thing out?

Eidolon of the Great Revel is a pretty bonkers good card. It does see cross format play but only in specific strategies. I have no doubt it will rise over time (barring bannings or reprints) but I'm not sure it will skyrocket. Dig Through Time would be a decent investment as I'm sure it will rise - especially if Treasure Cruise gets banned (which is a real possibility). DTT also sees quite a bit of cross format play too. My best advise, if you're looking to invest seriously, is to pick up Fetches. Foil, regular, whatever... just get as many as you can while they're in print. They will go up, probably nowhere near as much as they were, but they will go up. Focus on getting the Blue ones though, they're the most desirable.

I appreciate your advice. FOIL fetches are my plan. I still think I will invest in at least 1-2 Eidolon of the Great Revels. I don't think it will be reprinted. Being such an unique design as an enchantment creature makes that unlikely in most scenarios. I suppose it could get banned, but I am willing to take that chance. With DTT, giving up my FOIL copy for store credit like a fool was disheartening enough for me to move on to other options.

The thing about Eidolon of the Great Revel is that it doesn't have any protection. It can be targeted. It'll most likely cost a player 2 life, but it will get answered. The fun part would be to play 4 of this little eidolon and have multiple copies on the board. I guess I will have to look at the banlist thread to see what the argument is exactly for it to be banned.

On a related note, delve cards like Dig Through Time seem to work nicely with the eidolon. Is Dig a card that I should invest in? Like a fool, I just traded my FOIL copy in for store credit, but now am thinking that it can only go up.

What does everyone think of investing in Eidolon of the Great Revel? It is a card that must be answered in Modern. I don't believe it is played in other formats other than Standard. It is powerful and possesses potential that reminds me of Linvala, Keeper of Silence. And that card has shot up in value in recent years. Am I off?

Thank you for letting me know. I was thinking of the new FOIL fetches as my new chase cards. I saw that FOIL Polluted Delta went down a bit. I'm hoping it drops a bit more before going after that one and the others.

I am relatively new to investing in Modern cards, specifically FOIL versions. I feel like this is where the value will be consistent and steady. I was wondering if it is smart to look at investing in certain Theros block cards relevant to Modern because Theros was not opened as much as other blocks and sets. Is it even true that the block was not "opened" as much as others? Are Modern-relevant FOILs worth me spending my online store credit on?
