Actually at one of the ptq's this season a deck top eighted that was fae with the dark depths combo in it, so you could essentially sub the 4 hexmages and four dark depths in that list for four thopter and 4 sword, and also make some other minor changes.
Dead/gone is bad... i have seen one deck post decent results with that in the BOARD and it was a combo elves list. Thopter/depths is probably the best deck in the format, and for the short week its been popularized its certaintly posted the best results. Its really hard to beat it because you have to essentially disrupt both combos in the deck, while playing through their disruption. Gerry Thompson did certaintly break the format with this one.
Guys, how about you all go learn how to play this deck before you comment on it?
This deck is designed to beat the crap out of Dark Depths combo decks and yet win with tempo before the Thopter Foundry combo comes online.
It also does well vs Zoo and Faeries.
The majority of its impact spells are high manacosts and this allows it to dodge Chalice, EE and Spell Snare.
Muddle is also somewhat dodged too because of its varied ways of destroying Dark Depths.
Lol at the ignorant people commenting without even trying it out or have an extensive knowledge of the intricacies of the format.
The problem with your statement though is that we have tested the deck. Your dark depths matchup would be decent if dark depths was still just running the dark depths combo, but no they are running thopter also. Plus the hate in the deck is to erratic, your running one of's and random 2-0f's which signal erratic deck building. Also, the majority of thopter players have switched from lsv's controlling version to a more combo oriented version where you get the combo assembled as quickly as possible and ride it. Zoo, you will beat because you are running flat out burn and creature hate. The big problem i have with the deck is it tries to be a very tempo oriented deck, while lacking the tempo. Garadon isn't that good of a win con on a lot of different levels especially with how late it comes down and how it forces you to build and play around it. By the way, i know a lot about this format, already I've top 16ed two cardboard ptq's and top eighted an online one. By all means though, feel free to play this deck if you don't mind the 0-2 bracket.
Regardless of the synergies of the deck me and my playtest group built it just to play with so could understand how to play against it if we had to play it in a tournament and the deck is honestly bad. You have a good zoo match but after tha you start scooping games to dark depths, dredge and especially thopter. Fae just 2-0's you before you can even resolve a spell. The deck is awkward and all over the place, this is probably one of those "fluke" situations where a bad deck gets there.
If you are going to play a deck at a ptq i'd play phage a.k.a gerry thompson's thopter/dark depths list which he won and also top 4ed a ptq with and since then has won and top 8ed 4 ptq's
Seems like he just got the match-ups and draws he needed to win a ptq. I've won my fair share of ptq's and it seems like you need from my personal experience good match-ups, good draws, tight play, and a lot of luck. The deck itself looks pretty bad, and seems to be ll over the place and have no purpose other than to land the garadon. If you are looking to center your deck around a big creature why not just play dark depths?
The version running multiple copies of swords and thopters is no where near as consistant as the control version. Essentially in that list you are trying to randomly win by getting your combo. its pretty reminiscent of the swans deck of last season where you could top deck chain of fire and just win.
I'm still curious how you're making a turn 1 3/3 nacatl? lol I know he's gonna be 3/3 on turn 2, but turn 1? really?
Anyways, I am not supporting Boros in extended, rather a Boros "sight minded" strategy that is currently being used "one drop zoo" with the inclusion of Ranger of Eos, no more than a two of, which does make you a favorite in the zoo mirror (see last years Ranger Zoo builds teched for winning the mirror) in a Zoo heavy environment. Adding a singleton Bushwhacker as a Ranger search target is a decent option as it makes all your guys bigger, gives them all haste and can blow them out if they aren't prepared.
Already a lot of zoo list are running ranger of eos, its not like he's the new tech. I don't understand though how you expect to win the zoo mirror playing one drop zoo against big zoo decks or rubin zoo decks which are meant to prey on the zoo list with smaller creatures. Once they get their grove of burnwillows/punishing fire engine on you essentially lose.
In standard the deck is viable because you play fast creatures before your opponent can deal with them and essentially outrace them. In extended you are dropping small creatures like ismaru or goblin guide on turn one which pales in comparison to a turn one 3/3 nacatl. Then on turn two the can have a 2/3 or 3/4 tarmogyf which just keeps getting bigger. The deck isn't viable in extended and for the most part its a bad idea to take popular strategies from one format and try to transplant them into a different format because the card pools significantly change and therefore the field and decks you will ply against are different nd better and the card selection and availability becomes different therefore altering your deck and sometimes making the overall strategy of the deck become void. I think largely thats what is happening to your bushwacker strategy in extended.
Na, he just got me kind of upset...but i'm good on the girlfriend end, lol
Dark depths just rips the hate out of the hand then proceeds to say well i either have dark depths or thopter, you can't beat both of them.
