Whuwhuwhu-what?! How did Dragonstorm beat Sands of Rebirth!? I saw the quarterfinals this morning, and once I saw Nassif's last 2 match ups i though he had it in the bag, and went off about my business. That is insane, Dragonstorm beating an impossible match up 0.o.
In two games, Nassif had Marytr but no white cards so he couldn't stay out of range of the dragons.
Game 5, Nassif got greedy and tapped out at "only" 20 life to be ready to gain oodles of life on his next turn.
Mihara didn't give him that next turn. Two Seethings Songs made a Dragonstorm that got two Hellkites and a Hunted Dragon and swung for the win with the Hunted Dragon and a Hellkite that was already in play.
Karsten wasn't outplayed. He was cheated against. What's worse is that the judges allowed it. I have Karsten > Mori as a player, but that's irrelevant to this year's worlds
For crying out loud, Karsten WAS NOT cheated.
Karsten didn't catch the non-interaction between Seedborn Muse and Yosei. Neither did any of the judges that were watching the match. Hell, it was Randy Buehler and BDM doing the commentary that realized it first. The judges made the only ruling they could given the situation.
Moving on...
I guess I'll throw out my predictions too. I put them on the other thread about Worlds, but since this thread seems to be exactly about that...
I don't quite know Standard as well as some people, and I'm not entirely sure how some of these matchups play out but I'll start throwing out predictions on this thread based on the decks/card quality..
***QUARTERFINALS***
1-Paulo Carvalho's Gruul Beats [Portugal] against 8-Ryou Ogura's TriscuitTron [Japan]
Truthfully, I don't like Carvalho's chances here. I think Ogura's sideboard gives him a huge advantage in games 2-5, but Carvalho should be able to get game one without much trouble. Carvalho will almost need his "nuts" draw to win sideboarded games and even then Ogura has Faith's Fetters to ruin all the work he has put in. Carvalho has a fighting chance for sure with his sideboard, but I'll pick Ogura here.
Winner: Ogura in four
2-Paulo Vitor damo de Rosa's Boros Deck Wins [Brazil] against 7-Makahito Mihara's Dragonstorm [Japan]
Damn it. Why did PVddR have to get matched up with the damned combo deck?
Anyway, it seems that it all comes down to Worship/Priest (or perhaps Paladin) in games two-five. Mihara's only answer to that is Repeal. Honorable Passage and Cryoclasm could be some good too.
I'm going to buck the trend of combo beats aggro and say PVddR, but it won't be easy (He may have to pull the "lethal on the stack, Helix you to stay alive and kill you next turn bit")
Winner: damo de Rosa in five
3-Tiago Chan's RUW Control [Portugal] against 6-Gabriel Nassif's UW Sands of Rebirth [France]
The question to me is "Can Chan beat Nassif before Nassif gets the permanent-lifegain going?" Looking at these lists, I have a feeling that this match will take a long time (as in Wake v Wake from when Daniel Zink won Worlds three years ago)
I don't see anything in game one Chan can use to stop the engine and eventual victory by Nassif, and it dosen't seem the sideboard gives him any help either. Unless I'm missing it, Nassif seems to win by gaining 8.4 million life and then swinging any number of times with the turnskipping selfreanimator. Fetters could in theory put a stop to that.
Nassif has awesome sideboard cards. Chan might as well scoop if Muse Vessel resolves. Frankly, other than manascrew, I can't see how Chan wins even a game.
Those Wildfire Emissaries would be awesome....if he were playing PVddR. Against Mori, they are just four mana 2-power creatures that can't be Fettered.
I think this plays out almost exactly like Carvalho-Ogura except that Lovett has a better chance in sideboarded games. If Lovett had four Cryoclasms instead of two, this would be a bit closer.
Winner: Mori in four
***SEMIFINALS***
5-Katsuhiro Mori's TriscuitTron [Japan] versus 8-Ryou Ogura's TriscuitTron [Japan]
These decks are exactly the same except that Ogura has 2 Spell Snares in the board where Mori has 1 Spell Snare and 1 Trickbind.
This might go longer than last year's quarterfinal match between Frank karsten-Ding Leong...[NOTE: If the judges didn't step in, they might just be resolving their mulligans for game four right now]
It's UW against UW.....Randy Buehler will wet himself.
For no other reason than he is the defending champion and the designer of the deck, I'll pick Mori to make it to the finals for the second straight year.
Winner: Mori in five, get a cup of coffee and some food, you'll be here a while
2-Paulo Vitor damo de Rosa's Boros Deck Wins [Brazil] versus 6-Gabriel Nassif's Sands of Rebirth [France]
Like Chan-Nassif, the question is "Can PVddR beat Nassif before Nassif gets the permanent-lifegain going?" Unlike Chan, PVddR can do it. It will take one hell of a draw to do it, but he can do it.
The Worships will come in handy again but Nassif has better answers for it than Mihara does. If Nassif can get the machine to work once, that will be game, set, match.
I'm hoping for PVddR, but I think its Nassif's time in Paris.
Winner: Nassif in four
***FINALS***
5-Katsuhiro Mori's TriscuitTron [Japan] versus Gabriel Nassif's Sands of Rebirth [France]
Mori dosen't have a way to stop it either, except for one Trickbind but that's not going to be enough to stop the machinery. Nassif's deck is resistent to countermagic so that won't help.
Actually, its seems Nassif's whole deck is resistent to Mori's deck.
The Muse Vessels will be phenomenal for Nassif.
At the end of the day, Nassif will win the fight and he will win the World Championship in his home country of France.

Yeah, PV is awesome. I didn't like a couple of his draft picks though. He drafted BR Slivers, but not picking Stuffy Doll? Isn't Stuffy Doll the awesomest in Limited? (I think, it was pick3, pack3? I think, he took Grapeshot over it...)
Edit: Checked: It was pack3, pick3. Fujita 1st-picked Errant Ephemeron from that booster. Arita 2nd-picked Amrou Scout. PV 3rd-picked Grapeshot. Ruud.W 4th-picked Spined Sliver. And then Jonathan Rispal (probably shouting "Christmas!!!" in his mind) took Stuffy Doll...
Truthfully, its better in Time Spiral Sealed than in Draft.
If PVddR was drafting Black-Red Slivers, he probably was looking to be aggressive and did not want the five-cost Doll over the two-mana Grapeshot that can serve to finish a game (I am assuming that he is drafting a low-cost aggressive deck that can really take advantage of a lategame Grapeshot)
@RickCorgan: Edel hasn't fallen that far off. He is only one point behind the top 8 right now.
Here is the top 32 as WotC has them now (it has been having trouble staying up today)
1 Japan 78 56.74% <--THAT'S A STUNNER
2 Portugal 72 55.40%
3 Netherlands 72 51.93%

8 Argentina 63 54.58%
9 Wales 63 52.08%
10 Austria 63 51.31%
11 China 63 51.01%
That just means everyone isn't being random enough
For the sake of randomness, what game system (if any) is everyone going to get, the PS3 at $650 or the Wiii at $250? I'm going with the Wii until the next GTA comes out on the PS3/the system comes down on price a bit.

The reason I selected Last Laugh was because I like to see somewhat mediocre cards made into something special. I believed that it would indeed present a challenge to both Chimpanzee and zu_Faul to see how they would utilize the symmetrical effect to their advantage.
---
I would like to publicly congratulate both Chimpanzee and zu_Faul for making it to the final match. I know they have done an excellent job as Iron Chefs and either one would make a fine representative as the first King of Iron Chef Salvation. I am proud that my creation had enough interest and time dedicated to it that this event was possible. The American Nightmare has done an excellent job and I am absolutely sure that Jobie will take ICS to new heights.
Nahhh, I won't be here often enough, maybe twice a week at most. I have some time tonight so I thought I'd see what Salvation looks like.....just keep me on the friend list. Thanks.

CynicalSquirrel, I must agree. The forum awards are a joke in many regards. I am happy though that I am not being nominated for awards which I do deserve, like last year. I mean, I won best Block Constructed Strategist when it was Mason who deserved it.
Aw, shucks. I don't know. I mostly did the top 8 lists for Raia and spent time on the Gifts Ungiven thread during Kamigawa Block.
Next year, its going to be TAN for Time Spiral. **he's going to be pissed I said this**
He is resolving himself to break the Time Spiral format before anyone else does. If he gets lucky enough to win a PTQ for Yokohama, he will be ready for it. If not, than the Time Spiral Block PTQ season will be his playground.
