Sphinx Revelation by itself was assessed to be too mana heavy for just some life gain and free draws. However the presence of early game support cards made it feasible.

I don't like BOTG so far but I'm expecting it to be as competent as the old sets when Return to Ravnica rotates out.

Well we usually have one flop set in every block anyway (DGM, Dark Ascension).

Wishing for a Tribal deck as strong as the Vampires of the Zendikar block.

Minotaur Tribal will need some support instants and sorceries to make it competitive. Hoping that the next few spoilers will reveal some for us.

So far I'm not liking the set. So far the cards seem limited bombs and not standard changing cards like Desecration or Elspeth.

Drown in Sorrows is by far my favorite card in the set. I'm crossing my fingers that this doesn't end up like Dark Ascension or Dragons Maze.

The problem with R/G now is that the creatures are too big. Among the creatures Polukranos is the most consistent hitter, and that says a lot about the "4-drop" in R/G being in the 'Goldilocks" spot of mana curve.

    Quote from italofoca
And here it comes another season of people saying card x and y won't see play while they turn out to be dead wrong a few months later.

Hero of Iroas is interesting but the chances of him seen play are much lower then the phoenix. He will only see play if a voltron deck appear again, which demands a Rancor-level aura and if no edict spell is printed after rotation. While his good in a specific but generally weak shell, phoenix is a option if mono red doesn't want to go for 5 mana drops (almost never).

The phoenix is potentially better then SBD as well. Both of it's mods are better and giving your opponents the chance to choose will probably won't change that fact. 4 mana 5/5 flyers is considerably better then a 5 mana 4/4 flyer-haste and a 4 mana 3/3 flyer haste is also better then a 5 mana 4/4 flyer haste as well. Pro white is not that relevant (not many white creatures to block it, not many white spot removal) while the ability to come back is always nice.

You guys are seriously underestimating the difference between cmc 4 and cmc 5, specially in red that more often then not wants to top it's curve in 4 manas, not 5.

In theory it's not so bad but we have to take into consideration its rivals for the 4 drop spot, and in most RDW decks there's only one spot for the 4 drop.

You have Fanatic of Mogis on one hand and Purphoros on the other.

The biggest risk with this card is a ready removal the next turn, which would mean that you'll end up dealing 0 damage at all. Mogis deals instant damage which can only be prevented by counter and Purphoros speaks for itself.

It's probably wrong to view this card as made for RDW. It's more likely made for the R/G. It's a Turn 3 5/5 Flyer. You'd want him out early rather than Polukranos IHMO.

As a card it's not so bad. It would actually seem like it's the "non-synergy" dependent finisher RDW needs right now. I don't mind putting around 3 in my sideboard.

I do agree that it doesn't seem like a mythic. Chandra's Phoenix is so much better than this yet it's just an intro pack rare. If they wanted it to be a fair mythic they should have stuck with the original draft for this "4 Drop 3/3 Flying with Haste with the Return feature"

Fanatic of Mogis still seems superior to me though as far as the mainboard is concerned. The only solution to Mogis is a counter spell. On the other hand the Phoenix is easily removed by both counters and removals. Losing haste would also mean that you stand the risk of dealing 0 damage, compared to Mogis' speed.

This will definitely be a 5/5 flying for 4 at around 90% of the time.

This is playable in Standard. Currently RDW's only finisher is Fanatic of Mogis and Purphoros, which both require creatures in play. Stormbreath Dragon's 5 casting cost is out of reach for most RDW decks. This is a good third alternative.

I just dont understand why it's a mythic. Chandra's Phoenix is so much better I believe yet it's just a rare. Essentially it's a 4 drop 5/5 flying without haste.

Doesn't make sense to have a packaged product of 6 booster packs when you can easily buy 6 of them anywhere. As far as collectors are concerned that's already covered by the fat pack.

This might be a 2-player starter set.

I have the feeling this will be similar to the old Tournament Decks.

Anyway I hope they still release Event Decks. If not I hope they make better intro packs.

Wow how are these stores able to sell packs at $7? Eventually competition should be able to catch up.

Packs here are just $3.50. At most it's $3.80. Intro Decks are usually at $13 and booster boxes are at $95. Live in the Philippines by the way.

You can make a budget version of this and still maintain some competitiveness since the key cards are Xathrid, Brave and Spear.

I'm a bit surprised that the deck won GP Shizuoka. It's competitive against Aggro decks when it's mainboard v. mainboard but other aggro decks have better sideboard options. I played against a similar deck in FNM. I lost the first round and I filled the deck with burn spells in the second round to notch an easy win. I won the third round with Mogis.

It would seem that Spear of Heliod is a bit crucial for this deck. I'd probably make it three.

You have to realize that the FNM environment is largely dependent on the individuals who go to the event, which is beyond the control of LGS owners. There's no single way to describe FNM nowadays because each FNM event is different, even if it's at the same LGS.

There will always be oddballs in Magic. Also, do not expect everyone to be friendly because there's some pressure involved when you shelled out $6 on an event wherein you might not take home anything.

  • posted a message on Fat packs need to contain card sleeves
The fat pack is only meant as an "instant collection" for players. It would seem like they were meant for storage/reserve purposes instead of being playable right out of the box.

What the fat pack needs is the novel since it gives you a good background story on the set.

The sleeves should be included in the event deck, but then again this might skyrocket the costs of event deck which Wizards is keeping low to attract new players.

I'd rather have Wizards release a regular "Gift Box" which includes 2 boosters, a deck box, a deck sleeve and a playmat of the set.

Hi we're buying a glass covered wooden table and I was wondering if anyone here has a Hi-Res copy of the tablemat design being used in GPs and Pro Tours? I'll be printing it and placing it under the glass. Smile
