    He really didn't give you feedback. He basically bashed you about it. If it was feedback, he would have noted that you made an error on your deadline for the bonus points, not criticized and insulted you.

    Let me clarify what I meant when I said feedback like that:

    While "You're doing OK" and "Keep on doing the fantastic job you're doing" make me feel good, they don't provide information on a new system I'm implementing that may or may not be broken. I'm asking for feedback for a system that's in beta testing.

    Maokun brings up a valid point of "What if life intervenes?" The hard-*** in me says "Tough. You should of thought of that before you signed up." But then, the reasonable side reminds me that life can pull crazy stunts on you basically with no warning. So, how should the rules set bend to cover this? Well, especially in the case of time zone conversion error, ten minutes should probably be overlooked. Say a +15 minute or so after the deadline has passed.

    CrazyMatt has proposed an interesting solution to use Forum Time instead of Eastern Standard Time or wherever the next host is, but the problem I have with that is I can't find where Forum Time is posted. In the options, I set all the time stamps to render in EST.

    I guess a better request would be (Hopes that this doesn't unleash a giant flood) to ask for gentle critiques and suggestions for the bonus points system.

    ...Do you know about the card Tinker and the fact that it is banned in Legacy, right? While the "up to 3" and "total converted mana cost" do make it less powerful, people are still gonna find a way to break this. Turn 3 wins just aren't fun.

    What? I edited my post before you posted that! And you never said that it had to be the very last version and acquit to all requirements before the deadline anyway. I'm starting to take issue with the whole bonus points affair as it rather than reward promptness, punishes people with busy schedules, in different time zones or just bad luck as you're trigger happy to deny points for minutiae. As of now I'm 20 points behinds most of my peers because ridiculous nitpicking! That's in average as many points as a top 1 vote.

    I seriously hope the measure is removed in upcoming months or is at the very least less anally retentive enforced.

    Well, after reading more posts than this one (I happened to come first), I have come to the conclusion that I will honor my word and give everyone the five bonus points. Why?

    Quote from Darkfire_Games

    DEADLINE FOR BONUS POINTS IS 12:45 PM EST, 12/14/2011

    I set the deadline for December, that's why. Facepalm

    This is what I'm talking about when I say speak up when you think I've messed something up.

    ALSO: This month was an experiment Maokun. I went ridiculously anally retentive on giving the points this month to see if that's the way it NEEDED to be. The people who host this after me should probably be more lenient, but what I was trying encourage was to get everyone posting on the first day the thread goes up. If you feel like improvements could be made, go list them in the CCL Discussion thread. And I should probably point out that I've gotten a couple of PM's saying that I need to be STRICTER, not more lenient. Honestly I trust you guys enough to be honorable about this, and again, this was just an experiment. It will need to be approved by Gerrard's Mom and anyone else responsible for rules changes in the CCL before this becomes a regular thing. They may fiddle around with the time constraint, moving it out to 1/2 of time in a round (36 hours for Submissions, 24 hours for critiques) or they might not use it at all.

    I REALLY DO NEED MORE FEEDBACK LIKE MAOKUN GAVE. IT HELPS GIVE ME A SENSE OF WHAT YOU GUYS THINK OF THIS.

    Does this Ally implode? Not really worried about the balance thing so much as the does it stick to the battlefield.

    OK, after more closely viewing the entries, I need to tell MAOKUN and SHADDOCK86 that they need to adjust their entries. The REQUIREMENT for the round is an Enchantment creature or an Artifact creature.

    Overview
    The CCL is among the more fun games on the MTGSalvation forums due to the interactions of the Leaguers (that's you). We actively critique each other's card designs each round, putting a more personal interest into everyone's cards and trying to make us all better designers. Typically, we build worlds more complete than many other games, as each round builds on the designs and ideas of the prior rounds. The CCL allows for Leaguers to delve into the depths of creativity, as the point-schedule aspect allows for three full rounds without fear of elimination.

    Schedule
    • The CCL runs six rounds each month, all but the final lasting five days.
    • In Rounds 1, 2, and 3, the host will divide the participants into even teams (generally 4) and then assign either a general task for all teams to complete or specific tasks for each team to complete. Each of these rounds are divided into a Challenge round and a Critique Round (Described below).
    • In Rounds 4 and 5, the remaining competitors will be divided into pairs, with the pairs again either receiving a general task or a pair specific task. This round has a Challenge Round and a Critique Round.
    • In Round 6, the two finalists will be given one final challenge to complete. While this round does have a Challenge Round, it does not have a Critique Round.
    • Each round will last five days: 3 days for the Challenge Round and 2 days for the Critique Round.
    • While this isn't always a guarantee, the schedule will use EST (Eastern Standard Time, GMT -5) if no other time zone is given. We will stick to this schedule as closely as possible, adjusting as necessary.
    Challenge Rounds
    • When the round is posted, the host will provide a challenge for the round. This challenge may be a general task for all players, a list for the players to choose from, challenges assigned to each team, challenges assigned to each leaguer, or other variations the host might think up.
    • Each Leaguer will post his or her entry by the posted deadline or 3 days after the round is posted.
    Critique Rounds
    • After the Challenge Round ends, the host will close the round and start the Critique Round. After this point, modifying the post that contains your entry for the round will incur a Penalty.
    • Each Leaguer is encouraged to thoroughly critique all of the people he or she is given to critique, though this is not required.
    • In addition to the critiques, each Leaguer will provide a list of Top 3 entries for the team they critiqued. As these T3's are the main source of points in the CCL THEY ARE MANDATORY. Even if critiques are not submitted, a T3 must be to avoid any Penalties. Even if a person gives a team critique, they are not required to base their T3 on those critiques.
    • A valid critique does not need to be very long. A few constructive sentences will go a long way, so long as they are meaningful. "Hated it", "Too Expensive", "Bahhrokken!" are all invalid critiques, and will not be counted as such.
    EXAMPLE:
    The following card was submitted for the round:
    Searching the Tomorrows 4UU
    Instant (U)
    As an additional cost to cast Searching the Tomorrows, discard a card.
    Search your library for a nonpermanent card.
    Shuffle your library, then put the card you searched for into your deck second from the top.
    At the beginning of your next upkeep, draw a card.
    And lo, I sought tomorrow, hoping to find riches not here today. However, my search was in vain, for I died before the sun rose.

    All of the following are valid critiques:
    Templating issue with "nonpermanent card," as that is confusing and should just read "instant or sorcery card." And the cost seems steep: I'm spending mana, discarding a card, and I only get to put my card on top of my library. Creative, but not bad.

    I hate the name. Also, the shuffle part should be right after removing the tutored card instead of on a separate line. Seems powerful for an instant, play it on an opponent's turn and you basically get a free draw, but you get to pick it.

    A bit complicated for an uncommon. It doesn't go to microtext on a render (at least, without the flavor text) but it still isn't all that intuitive.

    Valid Entry Requirements
    • A valid entry for a round cleanly delivers all required components of the challenge. The CCL is based around card design, so each challenge will direct Leaguers to design on or more cards, but other components may be given according to the host's discretion. Historically, these non-card components have included things like keyword mechanic design, story pieces, and various ideas for the host to incorporate into later rounds.
    • While it is not required, adding a render of your card is customary. Some leaguers may not have access to render design software and therefore shouldn't be penalized for posting an entry without a render. However, a proper render makes it easier to critique a card, as it allows judges to quickly gauge wordiness as well as making it simply easier to imagine the card. Commong rendering software includes The Magic Set Editor, Adobe Photoshop, and The GIMP. Note that the MSE and the GIMP are freeware.
    Scoring
    • In Rounds 1, 2, and 3, players will have a chance to get up to 110 points towards their score.
    • The Top 3 provides points for those players on it: 3 points for the person in 1st place, 2 points for 2nd, and 1 point for third.
    • In addition, players will receive 1 point for posting a Top 3 and 1 point for providing valid critiques to the appropriate team.
    • The points gathered this way are fed into this equation: P = (X/Y) * 100
    • P is the number of points that player recieves for the round. X is the number of points the player received from their T3's and from providing critiques. Y is the total number of points that player could have received in the round. ((3 * Number of Judges) + Critique Points.)
    • In addition to those points, each player who posts a valid, critiquable entry 24 hours after the round thread IS POSTED will receive 5 points. This is not dependant on any anything else.
    • Each player who posts a full Critique and T3 within 24 hours of the Challenge round closing will also receive 5 points. This is not dependant on any anything else.
    • The Points from each round are totalled at round three, and the top scorers from each Team will advance (Usually top 2 for four teams, or whatever combination is needed to get 8 people for the Quarter-Finals.).
    Penalties
    • Failure to post an entry into a Challenge Round or failure to post a Top 3 during a Critique Round will result in a player being put on PROBATION. While on Probation, failure to post a challenge entry or a T3 will cause a player to be Disqualified for the remainder of that month.
    • Once a Challenge round has been closed, any Leaguer who modifies their entry will be disqualified for the round.

    * Penalties
    * Resources
    * Credits
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    * Overview
    The CCL is among the more fun games on the MtGSalvation forums due to its inherent aspect of interactivity among the Leaguers (that’s you). We actively critique each other’s card designs at the end of each round, putting a more personal interest into our cards and generally making us all better designers. Typically, we build worlds more complete than many games, as each round builds on the designs and ideas of previous rounds in the month. The CCL allows for Leaguers to plumb the depths of creativity, as the point schedule aspect allows for three full rounds without fear of elimination.

    * Schedule
    o The CCL will run six rounds, each lasting five days.
    + Rounds 1, 2 & 3 will be free-for-alls with each leaguer fighting for the most points during critiques. At the beginning of each of these rounds, the host will divide the league members evenly into two teams and each team will be assigned their design challenge. At the challenge deadline, the round will elapse into the critique section (see Critiques below). Once the critique section ends, the host will tally points and post the next round. Team rosters are likely to change between rounds; the new rosters will be included in the initial posting for the next round.
    o Each round will last five days: 3.5 to finalize designs, 1.5 for critiques.
    o The schedule will usually operate according to US Eastern Time Zone (GMT -5). We will stick to this schedule as closely as possible, adjusting as necessary.

    * Challenge Rounds
    o At the start of each round, the host will post the challenge for the round. This may be, at the host’s discretion, a single challenge for all leaguers, a list for each leaguer to choose from, challenges assigned to each leaguer, or other challenge variation.
    o Each Leaguer will post his/her entry by the deadline, 3.5 days after the round is posted.

    * Critique Rounds
    o At the end of each challenge round, the host, or an individual the host designates, will officially close the round and open the forum for critiques. After this point, modifying the post containing your entry for the round will incur penalties (see Penalties section).
    o Each Leaguer will thoroughly critique at least 50% of the entries given by the leaguers on the other team.
    o In addition to the critiques, each Leaguer generates his/her list of the Top 3 entries for the round. The Top 3 listings are the chief source of points within the CCL and are therefore required to complete. Even if critiques are not completed, Top 3’s must be listed to avoid penalties (see Penalties for penalty schedule). Regardless of the cards actually critiqued by a given Leaguer, Top 3’s can be drawn from any valid entry of the round. Submitting Top 3’s grants one point.
    o A valid critique does not need to be lengthy. A few constructive sentences will do as long as they are meaningful. Neither “Hated it,” “Too expensive,” nor “Bahhrokken!!!” are valid critiques.
    Example:
    The following card is submitted by Fitzgerald:
    A few decent critics:

    from Tiberius: Templating issue with “nonpermanent card,” it's confusing and should just read “instant or sorcery card.” And the cost seems steep: I’m giving up a mana, a card, and immediate access to the card I looked for. Creative, but not bad.

    from Wilhelmina: I hate the name. Also the shuffle part should be right after removing the tutored card instead of on a separate line. Seems powerful as an instant, play it on the opponents turn and you get basically a free draw, but you get to pick it.

    from Beauregard: A bit complicated for uncommon. It doesn’t go to microtext on a render (sans flavor text) but it still isn’t all that intuitive.

    * Valid Entry Constitution
    o A valid entry in a given round cleanly delivers all required components of the challenge. The CCL is based around card design, so each challenge will direct Leaguers to design one or more cards, but other components may be given according to the judge’s discretion. Historically, these non-card components have included such things as keyword mechanic designs, story pieces, and various ideas for the judge to incorporate into later rounds. Include only what is described by the challenge requirements, as superfluous items may sway judgings unfairly and will incur penalties.
    o It is customary to include card renders in entries. This is not required. Some Leaguers may not have access to render design software and therefore will not be penalized for posting an entry without a render. However, it must be understood that a proper render is easier to judge/critique as it is more pleasing to the eye, more memorable and allows for Leaguers to judge the card by its wordiness, a very important aspect of a card’s design. Common rendering software used include Magic Set Editor (free program, the standard that most amateur designers use), PhotoShop (not free), and GIMP (free PhotoShop knockoff).

    * Scoring
    (This has been depricated, and pending approval from the powers that be will be deleted. See the next spoiler section for how Scoring works.)
    o The bulk of available points will be derived from Top 3 listings, as is League custom. Within each Top 3 listing, the choice for 1st place will be awarded 3 points, the choice for 2nd place will receive 2 points, and the choice for 3rd place will receive 1 point. It is common for Leaguers to post an Honorable Mention or two along with their T3 listings. Honorable Mentions are not awarded points. Posting T3s is required and awards one point for completion of the requirements. There are penalties for failure to post T3s (see Penalties section).
    o Critiques are an optional aspect of the CCL, therefore no penalties are given for failure to complete critiques. Any Leaguer completing critiques for at least 50% of the other team's entries will receive 1 bonus point. An additional point will be awarded if a Leaguer critiques all valid entries in the round.
    o As noted in the section on Valid Entry Constitution, entries are encouraged to contain proper card renders. Some Leaguers may not have access to render design software and will not be penalized for posting an entry without a render.

    * Penalties
    o Failure to post Top 3s as required during the Critique section of any round will put a Leaguer on probation. While on probation, failure to post an Top 3 in any later round will disqualify that Leaguer for the remainder of the month.
    o Once a Round elapses into its critique section, any Leaguer modifying their entry after any leaguer has posted a critique, will be disqualified for the round.
    o Failure to post an entry within the Challenge round will put a Leaguer on probation. While on probation, failure to post an entry in any later round will disqualify that Leaguer for the remainder of the month.

    * Resources
    o This is a templating guideline compiled by Kraj. It is quite concise and very useful.
    o Making Magic by Mark Rosewater, current head of Magic Design at Wizards of the Coast. Making Magic is a weekly article detailing the trials, tribulations and achievements of Magic R&D in riveting prose.
    o Magiccards.info is the database mtgsalvation draws upon when you use the [card] tag. The advanced search functionality is useful for searching all cards officially printed by WotC.
    o Gatherer is the database maintained officially by WotC. It has slightly different functionality than magiccards.info, but the differences are too numerable to list here. (Someone should write an article about that)
    o Your other Leaguers are fantastic resources. We, more than the players of other games on this forum, are a community, as can be seen by the dialogue of any CCL thread.

    Each round, the players have a chance of getting a total of 100 points toward their score. Each score is determined by the following equation:
    The grading of 3 points for first place, 2 points for second and 1 for third still stands. This is also the case for up to 2 points for crits and Top 3.
    Total points of player A in round N = 100 * X/Y
    Where:
    X = Total number of points given by judges + (Bonus points for critiques & Top 3)
    Y = Total number of points possible (3*Number of judges + Bonus Points)
    This way the grading is more streamlined in the fact that all rounds up to going to top 8 are graded equally, and there is no handicap for any team that has fewer judges.
    Each player starts the next round with the score that he previously had, and another possible 100 points is given to him at the end of that round. Therefore, there is a possible 300 points before the CCL goes to top 8.

    ROUND 3 CHALLENGE: Create a creature that is a piece of art or bit of permanent magic of your civilization that has begun to move under its own power.(MUST BE AN ARTIFACT OR ENCHANTMENT CREATURE!)

    First bit of story for this CCL: A tiny crevice in the ground, no wider than a needle opens in one of your cities. The small holes begin to ooze a mysterious, glowing, blue substance. At first, the goo seems like tar, slowly creeping out onto the level plane without heed of landmarks. Then, with no warning at all, the small glob speeds towards a nearby statue and seeps into that. Two days later, the statue gets up and walks away.

    Again, just to get your creative juices flowing: Have the statues and monuments to your great heroes come alive? Have your underwater city bubbles begun to sing? Maybe one of your railroad trains has taken on a life of its own?

    EXAMPLE:
    Living Shocknet 3GG
    Enchantment Creature - Elemental (R)
    Reach
    When Living Shocknet enters the battlefield, you may have it deal damage equal to its power to target creature with flying.

    CRITIQUING ORDER:
    The Sanguine Team will provide Critiques for The Phlegmatic Team
    The Choleric Team will provide Critiques for The Sanguine Team
    The Melancholic Team will provide Critiques for The Choleric Team
    The Phlegmatic Team will provide Critiques for The Melancholic Team

    DEADLINES:
    SUBMISSIONS are due by 2/15 at 11:00 pm EST (GMT -5).
    CRITIQUES are due by 2/17 at 11:00 pm EST (GMT -5).

    IMPORTANT NOTICE
    I will be trying an experiment this month. If you post your actual submission within twenty-four hours of the thread going up, I will award 5 extra points to your total. If you post your full critiques within twenty-four hours of me saying “Begin critiques”, you will receive an additional 5 points. However, don’t let this bonus rush your designs. Better cards means a better chance that you’ll be top in the Top 3, and that’s worth more points.

    Kat, Tim, and Greg are all on Team 1. They have next round’s challenge; Kat and Tim both post with 24 hours of the thread going up, but it takes Greg 48 hours to post his submission.

    Likewise, Tim and Greg both post their critiques within 24 hours of go, but Kat is 6 hours late. The Top 3’s from the Critiquing team look like this:

    1. Kat
    2. Tim
    3. Greg

    1. Greg
    2. Kat
    3. Tim

    1. Tim
    2. Kat
    3. Greg

    1. Kat
    2. Tim
    3. Greg

    Thus, each player’s final score for the first round will look like this:

    Kat: ((3 + 2 + 2 + 3) + (2)/14 * 100) + 5 = 90.7 (85.7 without)
    Tim: ((2 + 1 + 3 + 2) + (2)/14 * 100) +10 = 81.4 (71.4 without)
    Greg: ((1 + 3 + 1 + 1) + (2)/14 * 100) + 5 = 63.1 (57.1 without)

    DEADLINE FOR BONUS POINTS IS 12:45 PM EST, 12/14/2011

    Yes, it seems that it is ill advised to make the critiques line up with Thursday-Friday, as everyone seems to be missing. We're missing most of the critiques for one team so:

    24 HOURS ADDED. ROUND WILL END AT 11:00 PM EST ON 02/12/2011.

    That should give everyone enough time to, as Rimeshade said, sober up and post critiques.

    Quote from PsiJet
    Oh, that's right, I'm just weird because I didn't see mine being critiqued:

    Monkey Playing MTG
    NightArcher
    Oculus
    PsiJet
    Rimeshade
    Rocket Powered Turbo Slug
    Ryder052

    *facepalm* Oh, that's what you meant. I thought you meant he'd gotten the team wrong.

    Anyway, 3 hours to closing and we're still missing nine critiques. I've sent out a PM to those who haven't already posted.
