Yeah, some extra part of the activated ability to make it more "un" would be appreciated. Even just like, "read a card's flavor text" or something. Wouldn't impact the function but it'd help it fit more besides some, admittedly amusing, flavor text and art. I'm guessing they're over-correcting from Unhinged's gotcha mechanic and how it made some players clam up and stop talking.
I just went from a thread where someone was complaining about contrapiton "forcing you to run another library" to this, lol. Also, if you get multiples, do you get 16 decks?
If anything refers to a library, pick one of these. That'd apply to a second copy of split screen so you'd pick one of the small libraries to split and end up with 7 libraries.
Huh, I wonder if this set will have actual chase cards. Probably not? (Other than basics, haha)
For fans of silver, I imagine there will be one or two. The planeswalker (there's gotta be one) might. Spike and the pack opening card are high on my list right now.
Without having seen the whole set, yes, I feel like large parts of this set are occupied by things that are not particularly out there.
For one, some of these things overlap. We've already seen dice based contraptions and contraptions that assemble contraptions. Second, we've already seen several cards that assemble more than one contraption. I don't think the set will need 1/4 assemblers if you can easily make multiple per card. Third, for dice enablers, they don't necessitate a huge amount. For example, there are only 12 cards in Ixalan that explore yet there are explore pay-off cards.
Basically, wait until the whole or most of the set is spoiled before you make generalizations.
I feel the same way. Seems like 1/4 of the set are Contraptions, 1/4 cards that assemble Contraptions and another 1/4 cards about rolling die. None of those are particularly out there.
You've seen the rest of the unspoiled set? Do share!
Does the enchantment actually do anything at all in this set? Far as we know, the majority of dice rolling being done cares about the difference between two results, which adding 2 to each result would not change, and the one card that doesn't roll difference between d6s instead rolls a d20 and needs a 20 to activate, so adding +2 could give you 21 or 22 and not activate that ability.
We know, currently, 25 of 200+ cards. Far as we know isn't currently very far...
Watermarks is neat, because it's something I felt they've always needed to try, but honestly its really a mechanic no different from checking creature subtypes, still glad it's added though
Watermarks can and do change on reprints. Because the WotC does not want different versions of a card to be functionally different, they cannot reference watermarks in black border.
This is not true. They printed as much as they would for a normal expansion because they didn't understand supplemental sets yet. Your point is valid, the audience for these sets is a subset of the overall MTG audience, people just need to stop saying the Un sets were a failure or that they sold bad because that's not true.
if every pack has 13 non-contraption cards, that leaves you with 36 cards at the end of a draft instead of the usual 42. That's a pretty big difference.
Assuming you take 2 contraptions per pack. Some players may end up with more or less depending on how highly they draft them. Theoretically you could draft only contraptions or 0 contraptions.
I have a feeling these will be quasi-tokens. We already have the verbiage to "create" tokens so "assembling" a contraption is pretty similar. (And I have a feeling the verbiage "create" came from the contraption design)
The real question is if cards ask you to assemble a specific contraption or can you assemble any? And how exactly the sprocket part interacts.
I really like how HoD stories are really focused on the world denizens, and the Gatewatch are essentially cameoing.
Probably at least in part due to people complaining about the GW. Obviously they have the main story strokes set up well in advance but I wouldn't be surprised if the actual stories are written much later. So they could slide around the details to make the story a bit more about the Amonkhet people.
I agree with MaRo's take in principle, and I think they have the right people in place to do it right. If I were on the Creative team, I would consider Dominaria's wild diversity of places and cultures to be its defining feature, as well as the complexity of its history.
Haven't they said Donimaria is like a nexus for the multiverse as well? They could lean into that for the story and the plane's identity.
(In b4 they split off some of Donimaria's more exotic locations into their own planes because "the mending")
There'll probably never be another set as mechanically diverse as the Time Spiral block. It's kinda sad, to be honest.
The "masters" sets are these, to some degree. It's honestly the only place you'll see as many disparate mechanics in a single place. Which is probably fine. They don't need 40 named mechanics to make a good set.
I think a properly huge creature (20/20) or a creature without a cost are the two most likely of the suggestions here. The former would be good enough Timmy/Tammy-bait to justify the mythic rarity. The later would be odd enough to make mythic, but would probably only see print in a set with mechanics that make it possible to play it.
I thought so too.

Your store leaves the tokens in the pack?

Clearly the price will skyrocket. Get your Storm Crows now before they do!
Storm is in an unset.
