  • posted a message on Debate Forum alums: Where do you debate?
After a number of years away from the forums, I logged back in on a whim, only to find debate shelved?! And, I guess the vs forum must have been axed, as well Frown

Those two subforums were among my favorites. There was nothing like having fellow magic players to engage in lively discussions on those topics Frown

It is a tragedy, no doubt. And, I haven't figured out how I feel on the topic, but out of curiosity: How do you feel about the idea of the US acting as the World Police?

  • posted a message on MtG expansions: Do you collect complete sets?
Long ago, in the earlier days of Magic, I collected a complete set of The Dark. I loved that set's flavor and artwork.

I took a long break from Magic, but got back into it a few years ago. While going through my rare binders, I realized I had unintentionally oollected all the rares/mythics from WorldWake and New Phyrexia, so turning those into complete sets wouldn't take much.

Now, I'm also thinking of collecting Innistrad block.

People with guns or conceled weapons are either paranoid or just trying to get into trouble. Even country like englund just think its outrageous for us to have weapons. We might as well let people strap bombs on themselves or let them have gernades.

Is this a serious comment or just a troll post? I'm having trouble discerning.

It doesn't really matter. He stereotyped a broad group of people. If he's trolling, he doesn't deserve a response. Otherwise, he's not likely to generate a meaningful discussion.

    Watched it today.

By far the best out of the X-men movies made thus far imo.

Have to agree. I remember thinking the first two X Men movies were entertaining enough, but shoddy in their execution. The new one was much, much better, and I was surprised to discover that Bryan Singer (who directed X1 and X2) did this one as well.

Actually, I am curious what the laws are around carrying a katana. I remember a video going viral involving a guy fending off a robber with a katana on a subway.

A kid not far from me killed a burglar using a "samurai sword":

To my knowledge, the kid in question was never charged with anything.

From my understanding, don't most school shootings happen where the students have a plan of killing themselves anyway? At least that seems to be what happens in real life so would other people having guns really affect that? Most school shootings are done by people who are also not thinking clearly, does having other people with guns stop that?

And in America, how many adult "predators" attack schools even though they don't have guns? Usually, in pretty much every case, it is a student of that school. If school's were so defenseless, why don't we see more adult shootings at schools?

Why does it matter, if a shooter intends to commit suicide? The goal in concealed carry isnt necessarily apprehension, but prevention, or at least damage mitigation. And, it happens:

  • posted a message on Leaving Magic Behind?
I left MtG once before, and am in a break now. The first time, I sold off duals and a good chunk of cards from Legends. When I came back to MtG during M10, and saw the values of those cards, I kicked myself repeatedly.

I have sold off some of my collection during this current break, as well, but I'm retaining stuff that I 1) Want in case of play opportunities (Commander decks) and 2) High value stuff that isn't likely to be reprinted. That still leaves a lot of cards to sell, that aren't likely to retain value, like fetchlands.

I wouldn't try to use your potential new position as leverage. I'm pretty sure it us true in most industries, that the biggest pay increases come not from raises but new jobs.

Some of us have more than one undergrad, or are working on an additional one. My first undergrad isn't exactly a moneymaker, so I'm back in college presently.

  • posted a message on Racism in day-to-day and pop culture (Asian-Americans/Asians)
As an Asian American, i have long felt that the race issue in America has been so often so fixated on black/white relations that Asian issues are usually ignored or glossed over.

I have no scientific explanation as to why, but I would guess it is a combination of factors: Asians represent a smaller percentage of the population than blacks or whites in the US, and Asians have tended historically to be a more insular set of communities than blacks or whites, and until recently have been less vocal toward outsiders about racism.

There are exceptions where racism toward (or from) Asians gets front page status, like the LA riots, gangster rap in the 90s, but by and large I still don't think it is a significant aspect of the public conscience in the US. Most people probably don't know, for example, that not only blacks but Koreans and other minorities had no voting rights in America until they were granted it during Civil Rights.

My personal perspective? I've been the subject of racial slurs plenty of times in my life, though I wouldn't say any more or less than anyone else. As for pop culture, I think there is a difference in intent, between racism and "How I Met your Mother". Racism is intentional. HIMYM isn't, though I think a strong argument could be made for it being a case of not thinking things through, and not stopping to ask "Will this offend? Is it ok?"

In my personal experience, those questions aren't asked as often with Asians. The cast of HIMYM wouldn't dream of donning blackface and "paying homage" to 70s blaxploitation films, but no one stopped to ask if yellowface and kung fu films would be fine. Granted, the politics and stigma of blackface/black race issues and yellowface/asian issues aren't the same, but my point is that (again, my personal experience and perspective) Americans don't even think to ask the question in regard to Asians, and for me that doesn't sit well.

  • posted a message on Every food goes with a type of cheese or peanuts
    Quote from Highroller
Tuna fish, salmon, caviar, and roast turkey. Neither go with cheese (no, seriously, **** tuna melts) or peanuts.

I would think most dishes in Western cuisine that wouldn't pair well with cheese wouldn't go well with peanuts.

That being said, I'm allergic to peanuts, so anything that does not go with cheese qualifies for me.

    Quote from TomCat26
Honestly, if an Asian food hasn't gone with cheese or peanuts, Westerner's will find a way to add cheese to it.

Or Asians, for that matter. There's cheese ramen in Korea. Cheese. Ramen. *Shudder*

Roast turkey doesn't pair with cheese? Have you never had a roast turkey sandwich with swiss, or brie, or provolone, or....?

As for the cheese ramen thing: I dunno, it doesn't sound that weird. Alfredo = wheat noodles and cheese sauce. Ramen = wheat noodles and cheese sauce, except the noodles are fried.

I imagine most any ingredient or dish, prepared by a capable chef, would come out tasting good, not just because of the chef's skills but also because "cheese" represents a broad category of flavors and textures: it can be pungent, paired with sweets, paired with savory, dry/crumbly or smooth, among other things. Nuts are kinda similar: there are so many varieties of nuts that I imagine they could be paired with just about anything in a complimentary way.

tigerdirect has good deals too. I've never had issues with their customer service, but newegg's is considered better.

I'm taking a break preparing a meal for friends tomorrow.

I'm currently eating mac and cheese with cheddar and provolone, cubes of summer sausage and sweet peas.

Tomorrow's meal will be Korean BBQ, with sides of korean spinach and bean sprouts.

  • posted a message on How did you meet your gamer Wife / Husband / SO?
My gamer wife found me. She was stationed in my area by the Air Force. She then sought out a church to attend, which happened to be mine. At the time, I had been leading the church's college Bible study, which she joined.

Initially, we had no interest in each other. Of the eight or so guys in our group at the time, I was the only one that didn't pursue a relationship with her in some way. Ironically, that is what opened her to the possibility of a relationship with me, since I didn't treat her as "OMG, cute gamer chick", but a person.

Gaming was something we did together, and still do together, though it didn't have much to do with the formation of our relationship. Well, there was that one time at a LAN party, where she totally wiped the floor with me in Counter Strike. That did catch my eye Smile
