if the decks that are being played are the same decks being played at the gp's then the atmosphere its being played in doesent matter. winning against it is winning against wether its at a gp, fnm, or pro tour
The main differences are that
A) There are no scrubs at the Pro Tour
B) There are no scrubs Day 2 at a GP
C) There are no scrubs in the top 8 of a PTQ
D) People spend weeks testing for those events. FNM is not taken seriously and people play loosely.
I see where your coming from, we have so many different ways to take the 75 that its hard to tell which one is the correct one (esp. when you have rogue deck builders pushing things in random directions every single day).
Anyhow I'm in favor of the variant I posted in the DtR forums with Dragons or something like this to tackle the Bx and Ux meta game:
I don't hate it. It's been demonstrated as awful against red decks though. I really don't want to go through this again. It's even worse now as there are fewer haste creatures seeing play.
It's better against midrange / control when they're trying to rely on 1-2 blockers to lock you out; it's utterly crippling there and the extort is good vs. control.
Against BTE decks, I agree it's terrible. It matters more against the dragon builds.
I wish I just knew what to play. I'm tired of thinking about this. I wish we just had a finished 75 like the devotion decks. Then again, it could just be that I'm having a bad day.
Blind Obedience ruins Obzedat and Aetherling. It makes Elspeth and Blood Baron have no immediate impact when they are trying to stabilize. It provides extra reach.
Don't laugh. It works.
I think it is also probably meant for the mirror / R/x. Not sure how it would be vs the midrange decks.
After seeing Blind Obedience in the 9th place list, I decided to give it a try. I actually rather like it vs Control. Any thoughts on which other match ups you would want to bring it in for?
I have found fanatic to be slightly lackluster against control, only because of the amount of removal some decks are running. I think where he shines the most is finishing off an aggro or midrange stalled board. If you go with chandra, she adds a little inevitability where they really do need to answer her or be buried in CA. If I'm drawing from her, I'd like to build a deck where the draws are a little stronger.
Two sets of evasive creatures is nice, one that recurs and other with protection. Not explosive like the fanatic, but always being able to have a creature with chandra on board is nice and she makes desecration demon not block. Shred freak and cackler could put decks running black removal into a spot where they need to use hero's downfall since they avoid doomblade, and that could make chandra, pyromaster a little stronger.
While RSF fits the curve, it's of questionable individual card quality. Didn't take me long to give it the axe.
Adrian Sullivan's deck is decidedly an aggro deck, rather than Big Boros, so discussion doesn't really belong here.
At any rate ... SCG Indianapolis is coming up. Nobody plays Big Boros. Is it because it has trouble beating the top decks, or is it because it's a rogue deck that nobody's really even considered?
Should I continue on the path I'm going and play this in the Open a week from Saturday, or should I splash green instead and make a R/G Monsters deck?
Thoughts?
Includes 4x 5cc dragons = big. It's not a sligh deck.
Depending on board state and your hand you can play either one to great effect. I normally play Zealot first if I have nothing to chain off BTE and get that 4 damage on turn 2. Zealot is extremely effective with her first strike 2/2 body. There are many critters running around that die to her. Not to mention having Shock in hand against a 4/4.
BTE counts toward devotion for Fanatic, can chain into several different things depending on the build, is a free 2/2 which isn't to be overlooked (people forget that she can still attack and block, she's not just a mana generator).
EDIT: The bottom line is that it's not a problem having both in your opening hand. You need to be strategic about your choices in this situation, but it's never a hindrance.
In my experience, the two ladies don't play well together. It has been better for me to play AZ + Young Pyromancer, or BTE + Firefist Striker + 4x other BTE targets.
Well, consider me a defector. There is so much red aggro and creature decks in my meta I have dropped the Firedrinker Satyr from my deck, but I really do love running Ash Zealot and Burning Tree Emissary in the same deck.
I've also gone down to one Hammer in the main with another in the board. In my meta of four toughness creatures, Mizzium Mortars is getting closer and closer to be a four of in my sideboard.
Why do you love BTE and Zealot in the same deck? They are a non-bo if ever I saw one.
Side firedrinker out in the matchups where he is bad. He's really legit in the other matches.

I don't understand the 1 of Satyr.

You're obvoiusly too good at magic for me.
Starting to remember why I stopped posting here.

To each their own.
Which, I'm clearly not understanding. Please explain.
