As much as it is disheartening to hear that Slivers will not in Dominaria (though that doesn't necessarily exclude potential Masterpieces) it is probably the right call. It seems like it would be somewhat disappointing to get 5 Slivers, 1 in each color (as leslak suggests) and then not be playable in Limited or Standard because 5 is likely to not be enough. Also, there is little reason to think they would not give us another 5 color Sliver Legend as they said that is part of the tradition of Slivers in sets so that adds another slot.
Note that I could be wrong as M15 only had 6 slivers (with the obligatory 5 color one) but I did not pay enough attention at the time to whether people felt this was too few. It was certainly fewer than they had ever done up to that point.
In reality, Dominaria has around 10 years of cards and lore to tap into and I am sure Wizards is going to try to fit as many things as possible into it. Making a tribal subtheme takes up room and I can see where they feel it would be too much to devote to it to make it playable that it took too much away from other things.
I agree with people above that Slivers will be seen in Core Sets (maybe even as soon as C19).
*Sigh* Seeing Aquitect’s Will in this makes me wish Wizards downgraded the Tribal card-type from evergreen to deciduous like they did with Protection instead of abandoning Tribal completely.
Could I say Cavern Of Souls is strictly better than Unclaimed Territory or could anyone actually conceive of a scenario where Unclaimed Territory is better?
Okey. So your deck has Cavern of Souls and plays counterspells. An opponents gains control of your Cavern and casts creatures. Your counterspells are now useless, of course. In this scenario it would have been better for you to control a Unclaimed Territory
Either Appetite for the Unnatural or counterspell. Boom, problem solved.
Walk the Plank feels like it is trying for flavor/gameplay convergence, then just totally fails as it kills sphinxes, dragons, krakens, probably pterodacy type dinosaurs, even airships should they happen to be crewed on your turn. I really hope to someday see a consulate dreadnought walk the plank.
I'm not against it, as these kinds of situations are funny, but the exception here doesn't come close to making sense.
I mean, is it really that much worse than your men hanging Emrakul, the Aeons Torn at the Gallows of Willow Hill?
You to your three men: How did you accomplish that!!??
Your three men: It wasn't easy.
I think WoTC should print new cards in addition to reprints in ALL Master's products, like what Commander just did. Make their set legality matter like Commander does and skip Standard in the case of the Modern Masters series and skip both Modern and Standard in the Eternal and Iconic Masters series.
Yes! This is actually a beautiful idea! They can use this opportunity to explore design space of things they've previously abandoned, like the Tribal card-type and old abandoned evergreen abilities like banding, regenerate, rampage, and what have you. I approve!
I'm just as curious what the commons and uncommons are just as much as what makes the rare and mythic slots. In fact, I'll go as far to say it's the commons and uncommons choices that is the deciding precipice on whether I draft this and/or buy packs.
I'm not going to read through 64 pages, but someone had to have noticed the vampire's resemblance to Vigo the Carpathian from Ghostbusters 2, right? RIGHT?!

If something other than a creature can have lifelink, then deathtouch should follow onto instants/sorcerers/artifacts/lands thematically as well.

Yup, there’s going to jank where I will question if we needed it included over the decision to drop Slivers.
People felt for sure Dominaria would have Slivers. Given this announcement I wonder if M19 will even have them either.

Spot on thoughts.
