Regardless of what happens here, a link to those threads/subforums should be put in Introduce Yourself. Not sure why I never thought of that before.
So, aside from the accessibility (which really should be improved), there are a few benefits here.
- Avoid having to update an OP with new contacts for each region. The OP currently is getting updated with additional names, but I'd be willing to bet that at least half the people on extremeicon's list don't even check MTGS anymore. It's not helpful and not performing its intended purpose.
- Threads organized by region to keep users checking back for replies. It will also be easier to find the thread and you know you'll find people in the area who are still active. Anyone who's interested in matching a name to a face should be encouraged to subscribe to their city's thread. I know I definitely would subscribe. I suspect others would as well. As it is, nearly all of the newbies looking for playgroups get zero replies because no one checks that General thread.
- Not be restricted to deckbuilding or playtesting like in Clans. Allowing idle chat, event discussion, and whatever else fosters discussion a bit better than having set limits on what's expected (and will hopefully result in more than 1 or 2 posts per month for the forum - what we're currently getting). I'm not looking for a deckbuilding group or playtesters, but getting to know the folks at FNM over MTGS is something I'd be up for.
tl;dr - More accessible, easier to use, more useful, and more family friendly.

That's actually exactly what I'm hoping for, and I suspect is the reason we're seeing more exclusive products like this these days. What I don't want is a fifth rarity level (above Mythic). If getting people to chase cards that have no impact on the price to play is the solution, I'm all for it.
I think a lot of players don't realise fundamentally why they like trading and like opening packs and like aquiring new cards to build new decks. My personal opinion is that having something to reach for is a large part of what makes Magic so addicting. Once you own four of every card, what else is there? You can't really enjoy trading anymore. You can build anything you want, but don't get the same satisfaction from finally completing that deck you've been working so hard on. So what else is there? Oh, right, black-on-black promos! Now I can work towards getting that.
People complaining about all this stuff pandering to the rich need to realise that the rich need some reason to stay interested in this game too.

You're reading Balrog in the wrong way. Obviously two identical cards will be worth the same amount. What work you had to do to get the card is irrelevant. What work you would have to do to get rid of the card, that's what needs to be factored in here.

So because Dominaria got the bump as the generic fantasy plane, Shandalar took that place since that's effectively what it's always been, not to mention that it's pretty difficult to imagine an interesting expansion based around the fact that a plane moves...

Anyway, yes, this is obviously true for a variety of reasons. What I'm more curious about is whether we'll ever see Jace again, or if he's permanently retired to Ravnica. He saw the destruction on Zendikar. If Gideon approached him about that, he may be swayed to help out. But one thing that wasn't totally clear is how the Guildpact works while he's off-plane.
I suspect he'll get a cameo in Ravnica 3.0 a few years from now, but besides that, I'm not sure he'll ever be back.
