Arguing over IP Law on the internet is not going to change any minds.
I, for one, am disappointed that the main Cockatrice server is shutting down, but I'm sure there will be alternatives.
@Feline: Weird little thing, but assume somehow that you couldnt use candelabra or it was banned somehow, how would you go about doing a high tide list personally (this is open to anyone really...)
What are everyone's opinions on O-Naginata? It's cheap enough to safely cast it on your own turn, and cuts the Vendilion Clique clock in half. I know the deck should pretty much just be card draw and countermagic, but the extra damage from O-Naginata translates directly into requiring fewer counterspells in hand to get the job done.
Just an idea, anyway.
I think if you're going to play equipment, you might as well play jitte. Its got pump, same as O-naginata, but its also got removal. And life-gain!
I noted that Pysces plays isochron scepter. I am currently testing jitte instead that slot.
I believe that with scepter, though good, is too conditional. If you draw it later on then you may not have anything to imprint. On top of that, if your counter spell wall runs out, and they destroy it then you have just lost card advantage. It does offer utility though. You can stick counter, bounce or draw on it. Though this is kinda conditional since you have to have the choice in your hand. Though the best was turn 1 land, sol ring, scepter imprinting counterspell. That was fun.
The Jitte is also confitional, though not so much. You have to deal damage with it first... so not too hard to accomplish, but if they have a maze of ith then jitte's in trouble. Though you can still use it when you block, and if they have maze you're already in hot water. another thing is it takes time to activate. Its (a very teeny bit) slow.
In summery: Its hard to test in EDH. 100 card singleton means you aren't going to see the card you want very often. So far I've liked jitte, and haven't liked scepter. Though this is flawed because my deck has changed (hopefully for the better)
Anyways on to another thing.
What think you about M11?
personally I think brittle effigy deserves a slot in here. Creature removal in blue. It's a shame you can't recur it with academy ruins though.
I don't know about crystal ball or the new oppurtunity/fixed mysteries of the deep.
I wasn't running the exact same list but I beat:
rubia soulsinger lock type deck.
that guy that makes thrulls whenever he casts spells.
doran
arcanis
jhoria
sensei's divining top. It'd be really cool with recurring fetchlands off crucible. standstill. draw 3! evacuation. Maybe you already tested this, but wraths are gooooood. teferi kicks ass in the mirror.
whats seat of the synod doing for you? memory lapse because you can counter the general, then tuck at their draw step.
I was just wondering, what do you think of relic of progenitus versus pithing needle? Basically is graveyard hate better than the ability to useless-ivize some generals.
Cards Choices:
If I had to replace cards with better stuff I'd take out: Fabricate (sorcery), Mystical tutor (negative CA), and Whispers of the muse (too slow). I'd replace them with better draw spells. Maybe Inspiration and opportunity, or (less likely) stroke of genius and murmurs from beyond; but I'm not sure if they are better.
Also: Sunder(I'm not sure if I should bounce my own lands. Also when is the best time to do it? I'd guess at the beginning of my opponents upkeep so they can't play cards except a land, or at the end of their turn, so they have to discard.), Ishochron Scepter (Because it's sorcery and if they kill it, its a 2 for 1. But I can imagine it'd be the nuts if one gets it working. I just haven't got it working), Proteus Staff (repeating myself, but 3 cost sorcery. I do not think they are very good. But you can steal their creatures and then get more of yours. And then once your out of creatures you can stack you library.)
Cards I'd wanna add: Library of alexandria, crucible of the worlds, maze of ith
Other considerations: Should have +2 lands. 31 counterspell is probably too much. Probably should have -2 or 3 counterspell, and maybe +2 bounce.
Anyway I think my illogical rambling has covered a lot of things.
Anyone have something else to add?
Also how do I get the deck to work so that it doesn't glitch magic workstation? When I import the deck it says it can't find many, many cards.
I don't use MWS because of idiots.
That said, I really, REALLY don't like Ashling decks, 99 mountains or 80 something mountains.
Ya, but it seems like a great budget deck. I mean the whole thing is like Ashling, the pilgrim -> $0.46 Mountain -> $0.01 or something. Anyways everyone has lands.
I miss good enchantments and artifacts.
Planeswalkers kinda killed them, because they do the same thing. or at least very similar.
But right now, planeswalkers are harder to kill.
maro tolarian winds
he doesn't die. Tolarian wind's effect resolve completely before state based effects are checked. and by then you have cards in hand
Since I've started taking standard seriously in November, I've never found anything to be terribly expensive outside of Walletslayer herself. If card's are expensive than you need to consider how you're obtaining those cards.
Some tips I've found useful.
A.) Find a good group of friends that play magic! This is probably the most important one, borrow cards from them that you don't have. I do this quite often. There's no shame in asking for help, and if they're your friends they should be more than willing to help.
B.) Do not buy an entire deck as singles. This is fine if your building a fun casual deck. Not fine if you're trying to build U/W or American Gladiators. You'll end up shooting yourself in the foot this way.
Now my only problem with C is that most of those ended up in my decks (WW and RDW). But you get the Jist.
D.) Make a friend with a Trade Expert. Major Card store has these people. Ones that can wheel and deal, find what they need, and when they need it. Generally make buddy buddy with em and you can get cards at much cheaper price. For example I payed $80 for a Full Playset of Arid mesa and Marsh Flats at the beginning of Worldwake.
E.) If you must buy cards, make sure the big ticket ones are ones that will see play in OTHER formats. Fetch Lands, Elspeth, ect. All of these cards will see play in other formats besides standard. Thus they still keep a decent value when they rotate out.
Thx kirby, this actually seems pretty useful. anyone else know how to save money on cards?
Anyways after going through loads of posts, is there anything WotC is doing for the player to help with the price? I like the idea of lowering set size, no mythics and holding more tournaments.
They stated a long time ago that they'd never reprint a card at a lower rarity than it was when it originally appeared. AFAIK, that's held up. So, once a mythic, always a mythic.
see serra angel
But i think it'd piss off more people if the printed it at a rare, then if they just didn't reprint it at all. And you know, the unbalancing of limited and all that...
I, for one, am disappointed that the main Cockatrice server is shutting down, but I'm sure there will be alternatives.
Here's a list that got second in a large tournament at the end of last year
