Guys, having tested the deck in the last days and enjoying it, some thoughts/ questions: What does Sorin do in this deck exactly? I see him usually in concert with Assemble the Legion, I guess to boost the tokens? Otherwise I find him exceedingly underwhelming in the current meta as he is not great against aggro and not terribly intimidating on his own. I still run 2-3 Lilianas in my 75 on the other hand.
Most people seem to agree on 4 Reckoners, 2 Obzedat and 2 Olivia as the creature core of this deck. I'm still undecided on the other slots, basically between Thundermaw hellkites, Angel of Serenity or Aurelia. Havent tested Blood baron yet while Sire of Insanity seems strictly sideboard material. Any thoughts on the last 3-4 creatures?
Also, I see some people running dead weight? How is this better than Pillar of Flame with Voice of Resurgence gaining in popularity??
I really dislike sorin in this deck as a whole. he seems very weak mos of the time.
Sire of insanity was a 2 of in the list that got 11th at the GP in the mainboard. so definitely not a strictly sideboard card.
I mainly beat with Boros Reckoner + Slayer's Stronghold or Blood Baron and Aurelia. SB, Crypt Incursion should get you there. Your list looks incredibly weak for that match regardless though. Tithe Drinker, Temblor, Lingering Souls and Sorin, LoI are all slow durdly cards that do not apply pressure or resolve troublesome board states. You have to be the aggressor in this match for the most part. Game 2 you can play a tempo game on them with Reckoner and Incursion. They lack answers to Blood Barons outside of Thragtusk mainly, which is why I bring in Slaughter Games to keep them off the damage offsetting machine that is the green beast.
Yea, i just played today in gameday, we had 31 people and i lost in top 8 to junk reanimator. I felt like i was the aggressor in the match but i just could take the lead at all. he also played lotleth trolls. Thanks for the reply C:
This set is a total money grab for wizards. It use to be rewarding that I had managed to collect and play with some of the more expensive cards since I started playing about when ravnica first came out. Whats disapointing is that all that collecting and hard money spent is about to go out the window. Now I know that last statement is a little over dramtic, but if it was all about getting the card pool more available they would not create limited reprint supply and higher purchase price to boot. It's also clear that the reserve list that will not be reprinted is a true slap in the face to every new customer in the last ten years. If it's all about supply and demand how do I get to play legacy without selling my car? The thing that sucks is that they created Mythic Rares for one reason periord. Wizards only wants to make cards that truley hold their value when it's connected to the current product they are pushing.
My bother over the years has always looked down on me for collecting magic by saying that the cards are just plain cardboard and that Wizards provides worthless paper for my hard earned income. I use to argue that magic could be a decent investment and that some cards would pay for themselves over the years because I was smart and lucky enough to have played the game going back about ten years. I will never delude myself like this again. These cards are now an offical bad investment longterm and they feel closer to my brother's explanition then mine. Don't get me completly wrong, I can and suspect that I will still have fun playing magic for years to come, but I don't trust the game as a good way to make any type of long term investment anymore. Wizards is about the money grab and I spent 10 years thinking differently. You live and you learn, I just hope my future lessons are not as expensive as this one.
The evolution of all things is there is a give and take in everything. Relationships, companys and personal belief can all change for good or bad when you test the measuring scales.
You should not be looking at a collectible card game as an investment in the first place. Cards are not stock and should not be treated as such, this argument that you are presenting the why the reserved list came about.
This deck in my opinion is playing very well in the meta. i have went back to back 1st at my LGS this last week and am going to be playing with a list i feel confidant in.
ultimate price has been very good for me, it does a great job of hitting hellrider, thundermaw hellkite, ash zealots, frontline medics, angel of serenity, and ect...
One of the big problems with this deck is dealing with haste threat after haste threat as most of our removal is sorcery speed so victim of night and ultimate price help a ton with that.
Sire of insanity has been great for me, im usually able to control the board well enough until i can slam him and be in the driver's seat. i have also been playing him with underworld connections as a draw 2 per turn effect.
i ended cutting sign in blood for underworld connections, the connections are very strong i feel and i won a lot of games from just overwhelming them with CA.
Game 1 i lost to Dos Rakias? i think that is what the deck is called. I over committed with my removal and lost to fatties. Was my ignorance of the match up.
Game 2 i played against uwr midrange. I resolved a underworld connection on turn 3, cast a collector on turn 4, and cast blood baron once the ghost was clear on turn 5. he tried azorius charming my baron to which i told him he could not. I resolved a connections the next game as well.
game 3 I played a pretty casual g/r ramp deck, he a was a beginner and made a couple mistakes
game 4 Same guy from game 1. Game 1 he beat me. Game two i flash backed a rolling temblor with an ash zealot out at 5 life and we both missed the trigger, called a judge when I realized it and the judge told us that it was to late and i ended up winning with blood baron. Game 3 I locked him out of attacking with reckoners and he kinda just helt a dreadbore for no reason, i cast a sin collector and snag it and then kill him.
game 5 Bant hex proof. Game 1 i mortared a pilgrim on the play, then temblored a pilgrim and a geist. they scooped on turn 5. game 2, they stalkered on turn 2, i had the flesh. they stalkered again. i cast a tithe drinker. they suited up stalker with courage and attacked. i cast blood baron. we traded hits for a while with both of us dealing 6 and gaining 6. I cast sire on insanity, they pitch 3 cards and i lay vault of the archangel and out race their stalker.
The event felt ok, tithe drinker was strong but im not sold on a set of them in the list. it did feel bad when they went 1 drop into spear on my tithe drinker. I like lingering souls and was considering going towards the bigger list with rites but im not sure.
i want to play a similar list for gameday but i'm very worried about bant hexproof as I KNOW it will be piloted and I don't know if I have answers for it.
You just bring in 4 devour and hope you pull em in games 2 and 3? How are u fighting that matchup?
Control will and always finds it's way, to break every meta existed.
You just have to wait, since it's the hardest deck to make and ofc, not everyone able to build or play control decks.
Control is the best archetype of magic afterall, it will never dies, just maybe, suspended, if currently cease to exist.
CONTROL CAN'T NEVER BE EXACTLY NETDECKED
At worse, contol players currently are too tired to play control and want to "rest" for a while. So they play aggro, which take less skill to play
Control is insanely easier to play then aggro is, you seem like one of the players that have become elitist from casting to many jaces in your life.
I am a control and tempo player and even admit that aggro is way more difficult to play.
give me a reason why planning sweepers and countering cards is easier than calculating combat damage, playing around sweepers and removal, and keeping a steady clock on your opponent while accounting for multiple hidden variables.
Umm, the art on the original is awful. Those two (sorry to whoever bob is), are incredibly ugly, the color scheme runs together, and really fails to capture the overall epicness of this card because it's so boring.
New arts awesome. Flavor, color, everything.
EDIT: How do people not get what flavor here? How often do royal advisor's hold the crown?
The concept on the art is amazing on this one. the flavor is oozing.

pillar of flame is better 70% of the time imo.
I really like this list, seems like a good day for this deck.!
