Mythics and rares alone made my box worth well more than I paid for it (MSRP). Although I will admit I was getting somewhat worried when I got to the last pack and had only pulled 1 mythic (Elspeth) so far. Here are my pulls:
It's mostly arbitrary. This used to be the way things were done in older tournaments, so a lot of long-time players just got stuck in that habit (hence why you noticed the players doing it were the more experienced ones).
Yeah, that was how we always played back during Revised when I got started. I'm pretty sure 4th even had some beginner playmats that had sections for the different card types on it and placed the lands closest to your opponent. I still play that way for the most part and know many others who do as well.
Wow, it's going to be hard to get as excited for the sets now. It's really sad they chose this path instead of acknowledging and fixing the editing and story-line problems that sunk the novels. Maybe I'm just too "old" but I'd much rather sit down and read a book for several hours than a short comic that I finish in 5 minutes. This move feels like Wizards is giving a big middle finger to all of the Vorthos out there.
Everyone needs to get in the habit of only using security backpacks when you're carrying around valuable decks or collections. You can get a really good anti-theft backpack for under $200 that is slash-proof and lockable, and while $200 may seem like a lot for a backpack, most of us have decks worth well more than that. I've heard Pacsafe is a pretty good brand for that. I know their bags are slashproof and come with integrated cable locks so you can securely lock your bag to whatever you need to.
Unfortunately Magic is not among the things I'm doing. I learned last October that I'm no longer part of the regular artist roster.
Seriously? You drew some ofmyfavoritepiecesofmagicartwork. Here's hoping wizards revisits and corrects that decision. I'll certainly miss seeing your contribution to the game.
At 8 cmc, they could have at least made it something like:
Archangel's Light 7W
Sorcery
You gain 2 life for each card in your graveyard, then return all human creature cards from your graveyard to the battlefield. Shuffle your graveyard into your library.
"This is the light of Avacyn. Even in her absence she offers us hope."
—Radulf, priest of Avacyn
... and it still wouldn't have been overpowered. But at least it would have been a playable card and potential finisher.
I guess we'll see in... A few months. I hate waiting.
Unless Wintermute writes the novel. Then Garruk will end up walking around for a long long gathering an army of werewolves, eventually running into Liliana who has gathered an army of blue-glowing zombies. Instead of fighting they will discuss their differences and kiss and make up. Oh, and at some point it will be noted that Sorin planeswalked in and was eaten by a pack of wandering goblin zombies.
So, I recently redeemed my scars block playsets from MTGO, however when I was looking through my foil sets, I noticed something odd with the foil MBS one:
Tarmogoyf
Elspeth, Knight-Errant
2x Reveillark (1 Foil)
Arcbound Ravager
Aether Vial
Summoner's Pact
Maelstrom Pulse
Kira, Great Glass-Spinner
Blinkmoth Nexus
Tooth and Nail
Lotus Bloom
Tombstalker
Stonehewer Giant
Jhoira of the Ghitu
2x Slaughter Pact (1 Foil)
Oona, Queen of the Fae
Angel's Grace
Dragonstorm
Greater Gargadon
Countryside Crusher
Pyromancer's Swath
Skeletal Vampire
Verdeloth the Ancient
Molten Disaster
Plus tons of good commons and uncommons. This set is very fun to open, almost ever pack feels like a score.

So, any word yet on a novel title and author?
Teferi was a U mage. But like you said, he could always Time Walk to the current storyline.
Look closely, the set contained 2x Praetor's Counsel and no Thrun, The Last Troll. Obviously I'm not exactly happy about the substitution.
Anyone have experience or advice for dealing with WOTC redemption sending out bad and/or incomplete sets?
