M2014 feels very "meh" to me... I definitely won't be buying a box... I actually might not buy a fat pack of this set (I have purchased a fatpack for EVERY set printed since Time Spiral)
You can work at the same time doing your MBA, that's what some people do. I will add one thing, make sure to pick up a useful foreign language. Also, look at what else is possible such as Six Sigma. that can be useful.
Speaking another language can be great for your career. Spanish is good but right now Asian and Arabic can be very beneficial to your chances of being hired (and career, in general).
I'm assuming it also has to do with the cost of hosting such a huge event. World's was awesome a few years back (that was held at the Javit's Center).
I would also assume it has something to do with there being no major game store in Manhattan (the name of the old place is alluding my memory at the moment).
I go with rares, mythics, foils (all of 'em), promos, and notable commons/uncommons (cards like force of will/wasteland down to things like lightning bolt/dark ritual/counterspell).
Generally, if the card is worth $1.50 or more I don't feel bad taking the time to list it.
I carry them around in a separate binder b/c most players don't want to look through common/uncommons foils (but there are a few that do and you'll get very good deals for you foils from them).
In terms of basic lands, those foils move very fast from personal experience. Once I have 3-5 (of any kind) someone trades them from me.
The other thing to do with foils is put up a trade thread on here and properly mark them all as "haves". You would be amazed at the random foils people message me out of the blue about. The other day I gladly traded away a FOIL Gravity Well to an excited collector (bet you had to click the link to see what that cards does!).
You could include hive mind in the deck to make copies of the cards you already play and have the pacts (pact of negation and slaughter pact are decent enough without the hive mind) as an alternate win. Make sure you play tolaria west to search out the pacts too.
I'm not sure you would be able to find an unopened Rat's Nest deck... another potential pitfall is the power level of different blocks. I did not play during Kamigawa but I would assume that any precon deck from that block would not be as competitive against other blocks (Lorwyn comes to mind).
I've been running a very successful league using the Return to Ravnica intro decks. Started with unaltered intro decks, added some packs into the mix on a week by week basis, did an organized rochester draft, and i've finally caved and allowed open trading of cards.
It had a modern border version. It was reprinted in one of the coldsnap theme decks... the white/blue one that was all about "Ripple"
Either way, nice to see it getting a reprint.

I tend to rely heavily on Magiccards.info MED prices myself.
I'm usually okay using most any prices as long as both sides of the trade as priced out using the same website/store.

1.) Better protect my small trade binder in middle school... I lost 3 duals and a few other cards to a thieving scumbag.
OR
2.) Come back to the game earlier than TimeSpiral Block when I quit a little after Apocalypse's release.
[In reality, I don't have any major Magic regrets...]
What pack rares you pulled from the box:
1. Overgrown Tomb w/ a FOIL Blood Crypt
2. Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord
3. Deathrite Shaman
4. Cryptborn Horror w/ a FOIL Island
One of the win conditions of the deck is hive mind combo with the various pacts (pact of negation, intervention pact, and summoner's pact).

Good Luck with your league!
At the Zendikar pre-release I attended I saw two pulled... a timetwister and a revised dual land (which I remember either a savannah or bayou).
