I saw this and have been pissed off ever since, wizards made a HUGE fail here, if they wanted a Mind Control effect at rare they should have just reprinted Control Magic and bumped the rarity since that's what they did with bringing back Spell Blast now. Whoever at wizards thought it was a good idea to rarity jump the worse Control Magic should be slapped across the face on principal. Mad Nodding the Affirmative Mad

imagine you one day find an email from WOTC R&D detailing the theme for every set over the next 5 years as well as any cards in those sets already designed. you are 100% sure of its authenticity and there is a 0% chance anyone will find out this email was accidentally sent to you. in fact, no one will ever find out this email was sent at all if you don't say anything.

    what do you do?

    1. delete it w/o reading because it is the ethical thing to do
    2. delete it w/o reading because spoiling this much at one will ruin the next few years
    3. skim a bit then delete it
    4. use the info to gain an advantage in MTG finances/trading, metagame testing, etc.
    5. post the spoiler anonymously to MTGS
    6. whatever else you can think of!

#4, but only to people I don't know or even some that I straight hate. I may also let a few things slip, but under different user names, cause I don't want to ruin pre-releases for everyone the way those d-bags did with New Phyrexia. What should have been a few hundred for the final regional Pre-release turned into a few dozen because of it. Frown

Plate Mail seems really good for some kind of sweeper heavy control as an alt win con.

In the last 2 months my LGS has had a spike in attendance. In the past it wasn't uncommon to barely break 5 rounds (17), since April we've held 2 6 round (34-36 people) FNM's, plus top 8. Needless to say we've all told the store owner if it happens again we need to do straight swiss. Nodding the Affirmative

  • posted a message on What would it take for you to decide WOTC had jumped the shark?
I actually had a discussion at FNM about almost this very subject and random Theros speculation of 71 Planeswalkers aka walkers at all levels starting with uncommon. We all came to a conscious that this would pretty much end the game in multiple formats as it would just take one slip up from R&D and what seems like a crappy uncommon walker would be straight up formats ban worthy.

    Quote from Hallow36
Everytime I cast Barter in Blood I slice my palm with it as an offering to the Stack. There are no responses.

I had a good laugh about this one, to answer the OP's question, never mostly because magic cards as opposed to regular paper have curved edges that are much harder to get a cut from. That being said it doesn't mean it doesn't happen, it just means it doesn't happen all that often.

  • posted a message on Why do many player seem to hate Magic?
    Quote from GlassCannon
For those you don't remember the recent Why do players hate Combo thread was my fault, but in reading it I came to an intresting conclusion. It seems like a lot of players hate the color pie, or the division of what one color can do as opposed to the others i.e. Blue countering spells, Green blowing up artifacts etc. why is this? It's a founding principal of the game that each color is unique and deals with things that others can't thus, incentivizing multicolor and therefore stonger and more versitile decks. Looking at older sets you can see clear division and unique interactions from each individual color but as we move foreward in time all of the colors seem focused on Creatures even colors that traditionally don't care about them much. Why is this the case? Why do wizards and a large amount of the player base want less diversity between colors?

It's not that I hate the color pie, but I do believe every color deserves at least one decently costed draw spell. Nodding the Affirmative

  • posted a message on Would you rent magic cards?
The problem with this whole thing is theft of rented cards. There are ways it could all be done that would make sure all rented cards are returned, but it seems like it would be more of a hassle then anything. I could see there being something done in the future by vendors where it could be either "leave a major credit card as insurance or photo id" so they could charge you / know where you live to get there stuff back. The problem with this is it comes down to the fact that not to many players would want / be willing to do such things. At the end of the day it all comes down to magic is a game of money, you either budget and invest or play what you can afford. Nodding the Affirmative

I would add Jace, Architect of Thought on here. His highest value was $50 shortly after release and now he's less than $10.

I know that one first hand, cracked it in one Pre-release, paid for my other pre-release. Smile

I'm thinking, since with MM they are showing City of Brass as the land advertising Modern, what would Legacy's Land be to advertise with?

    Wasteland , what else.

Redirect Reverberate Twincast Personally I've always been partial to Wild Ricochet cause even if they only do it for like 30, you get 2 shots.

  • posted a message on Would you buy alpha cards at a garage sale?
    Quote from King Pun
You are at a random person's garage sale and you find out that the seller had kids who moved out who played magic in the early 1990s. He hands you the box of cards and you find a bunch of moxen, maybe some lotuses, and other cards worth at least tens of thousands of dollars. The seller does not know any of the cards are worth anything and is mostly selling all his stuff so he can have room for an indoor gym so he offers you all the cards for 10 dollars. Would you buy them off him for 10 dollars or tell him their true value?

I've actually had a situation like this come with someone that used to play at my LGS, an ex-Yugioh player's father was at a garage sale in the area, came home and told this guy that he saw an old grandmother was selling her grandson's old collection for like $60-75 bucks. He want and ended up getting her down to $50, for well over 10K with of stuff, think it was more like 15 after all the calculations (Original duels, playsets of Force, almost every Modern staple etc) were done. Needless to say he made a lot of local player's enemy list when he sold the majority of the collection to another shop in the area and not ours. That being said if I had the opportunity, I would take it and never look back, give the guy the cash and walk away. He would never know, because it's not my job to tell someone what the value of there item is. People take opportunities everyday, some end up with million dollar paintings, I'd end up with a nice payday and maybe buy my way into Legacy in the process.

Usually it's packs or store credit based upon how many participants there are.

This and the top couple people also get an FNM promo.
