Given your propensity for Legacy burn and the work you've done on that thread - I'm not Surprised that you've taken it to Tiny Leaders ;P. Here's my list for comparison and ideas.
So First off, while I'm running a similar themed deck, I'm trying out Zo-Zu, The Punisher as my general, rather than Jaya. I thought Jaya at first, due to her Versatility, but casting Zo-Zu Turn 3 is likely ALWAYS able to get in a few shocks - while also causing your opponent to think twice about making late land drops. Sure, it hurts you too, but I guess my version is a bit more suicidal than yours with Flame Rift etc..
Some cards I didn't see on your list that I highly recommend:
Shrine of Burning Rage - Now, this card needs to show up in the early game to be useful, but when it does just WOW. The growth rate on this thing is just so sick that you can routinely get it off for 7-8+ damage and be a great clock staring down your opponent.
Kargan Dragonlord - With the CMC3 restriction, ways to dump your extra mana in the late game is very useful. Getting this guy to level 4 means he will beat most creatures in the format and level 8 he becomes a MUST answer threat. Sure, path/smother etc.. can knock him down and make you lose the investment, but his inculsion is still worth consideration for the later game.
I would normally never play Ball Lightning and Spark Elemental in Legacy due to the abundance of removal. However in this format, Spot removal is at a premium and very taxed due to the abundance of creatures. As a result, these guys tend to get in for nearly the full amount which is pretty mana efficient.
Some other comments:
In my experience Sweepers (Earthquake, Flamebreak etc..) are VERY main-deackable here. By deploying your creatures properly, you can sweetly 3for1 people very easily with them. Also have others in the SB for heavy token/swarming matchups.
Still, I've only played like 5-6 matches with the deck so my experience is very limited. Seeing your list, I realized I Missed Ash Zealot entirely, and should probably find room for Cursed Scroll as well. I'd love to keep bouncing ideas around here - Tiny leaders sure is a fun format!
Edit - After writing this up and reading your list again, I went through and tightened mine up a bit with some more cards I had laying around.
Playing with a group hug deck at the table CAN be fun in certain circumstances, - though its usually only for the sillyness factor. I agree with the kingmaker criticism, as those style of decks allow other decks to extend beyond their building constraints. However, Having played many group hug style games, I will admit that it can be fun, as long as you are aware of what you're getting into.
Say I'm playing several games in a night, I wouldn't mind playing one group hug game - but I would always ask other players if its okay if I brought out my group hug deck (or they would if they're playing one). If one person votes no, then we generally don't play that way. If group hug decks are bothering you and you're playing against them all the time - then simply ask the players not to use them. Most sensible people will oblige.
Oh, and as far as group hug decks go - there is still one card in those decks that I see all the time and can't stand - Dovescape. I'm pretty sure that is the only card that has made me ragequit an EDH game.
I've just recently got into cubing in paper with a friend's new cube and wanted to the poll the forum a bit for good strategies on randomizing packs. Most of my cubing experience is on the MODO cubes - so I have no experience with actually making the packs IRL. Years ago when I did a paper cube we just shuffled the whole thing as a group and built the packs. It worked out OK for most of the packs, but there were definitely some packs with 5+ of one color card and none of another - making it harder to read signals. My buddy suggested seeding the packs with random cards from each color: i.e: (2 of each color, 3 gold, an artifact & a land). Perhaps there are other ways to do it I'm not thinking of
Found a weekly Modern tournament in my area and will be playing tomorrow night.
I have no clue what to expect for a Meta.
Here is my deck as of right now
I've been kinda playing around with Mothdust Changeling and Cosi's Trickster but decided not to put either in for right now (though I feel the Trickster will get a lot better with ONS fetches coming into modern). I also like how Sygg, River Cutthroat synergises with this deck, but wasn't sure where to fit him in.
Hey, little late to the game on this but hopefully my answer is helpful
First off, Your list is VERY similar to mine - only 5 cards different:
-2 Dismember
-2 Thirst
-1 spreading seas
+4 Mana Leak
+1 Merrow Rejeery
I LOVE the spellskites in the main. They do so much to protect the deck and help bad matches (Infect, UR pyro, Bogles) game 1. Also, I love Vialing them in when I expect some in-combat removal on a lord.
I haven't gotten on the Master of Waves train yet (seems like everyone else in this thread has) - but He's on my list to test. Seems expensive at CMC4, but that pro-red protection against bolts is looking tempting. I think I might drop the Images down to 2 and possibly pull a mana leak for 2 copies, but we'll see. I don't wanna drop Images all together because he is mighty fine as extra lords/adepts when he needs to be in there.
I don't recommend the thirst for knowledge, you already have card draw in Adept & Spreading seas. I like Mana Leak main in my version because with an active Vial I can sit back and trap them into the counter while still keeping tempo dropping fish onto the battlefield. Try it, see if it suits you.
Spreading seas just doesn't seem to need to be a 4of for me. Sure, it generates unblockable, shuts off colors and cantrips, but as popular as Islands seem to be these days, I usually never want to see more than one.
As for sideboard, here's mine right now with some justifications:
2x Hurkyll's Recall (I would put 3 in if I could locate a third, affinity sucks)
3x Unified Will (Hard counter at 2 catches people off guard often. Mutavault can activate itself if you need to boost the count too)
1x Vapor Snag (The 4th is helpful against creature heavy matches)
2x Torpor Orb (Shuts off Twin, Pod, Snap - too good to pass up)
2x Grafdiggers cage (More help against pod, snap etc. Used to be relic which also shrunk tarmo, but I found it to be better accomplished by cage)
2x Echoing Truth (Twin, UR pyro, creature heavy matches. I've been thinkin bout switching this to dismember, Dead seems better than back in hand)
3x Tidebinder Mage (I'm not in love with him, he never seems to help that much and never really locks down Tarmo long enough before he gets killed. Not sure what to put but he's prob gonna become Swan Song as I am having real trouble against combo (Twin, Scapeshift).
There ya go, that's my 2c since our lists are fairly similar to begin with. Hope that helps
Given the reprint of Fetches, KTK seems like it will be a valuable set to open regardless of what else is printed in it. I was pondering on whether or not buying a case of KTK boxes at ~$600 would be worth it to resell at a profit if I sat on them for a few years?
Looking at ebay BIN prices on boxes from the past few fall sets:
2013 THS - $90
2012 RTR - $100
2011 INN - $200
2010 SOM - $190
2009 ZEN - $600 (+-100, high variability here, but we all know thats cause the Allied fetches and the Hidden Treasures gimmick)
2008 ALA - $400
Now, this is the only data set that I have - I wish I had a snapshot of what these boxes cost over time like the charts on mtggoldfish, but alas I'm not aware of such a resource (anyone have more extensive data to analyze?)
Seems like once a set rotates out of standard (actually about 1 year after rotation for INN), the box price doubles from the ~$100 range to ~$200.
Doing some quick math, let's say I drop $600 on a case today, then in 2017 sell it on ebay for ~1200. I'll subtract 20% for listing fees, shipping, etc.. to make it a bit more realistic. This means my take home would be $960 after 3 years, +$360 profit or 20% APY. Now, I know next to nothing about finance, but it seems to me that this is a rather solid investment, since the pitiful investment I have (a few thousand sitting in an online savings account at ally.com) is making ~1%APY.
What does anyone else think about this? Sure, it depends on hasboro not biting the dust and MtG still seeing an increase in popularity, but it seems solid especially since the fetches will be heavily coveted for eternal formats keeping the value of KTK elevated. Easy way to make a few hundred bucks only by sitting on a case for a few years.
honestly buddy, unless you do A LOT of travelling, I'd recommend taking that same $$ and putting it into a netbook/desktop. Check out the good points made in this article:
I have a lil $300 netbook that I use for travel/meetings/powerpoints etc.. It weighs like 3 lbs, battery lasts 5-7 hrs and is quick and for its size. It can run Mtgo/DTOP, but not really much else. With a big laptop like that, it will likely be heavy, bulky and get ****ty battery life.
For my serious gaming, I have a desktop at home that can run everything at nearly-max settings and has the option of upgrading piecemeal.
I know this might not be what you want, but at least consider it. I had a bulky laptop for years and am SOOOO happy I traded it out for a lil 11.6" netbook
While I agree that BR is strong, I've also had lots of success going straight BG too. If you get the dumb guildmage & some dreg manglers you're set to stomp
As far as statistics go, the funny thing about "random" distributions is that they won't appear random until you achieve high enough measurement observables.
If you wanna test your theory, compile a larger data set. I'd say 600+ packs would be requisite, (that way we'd expect ~75 mythics (5/ea) and 525 rares (~9-10 of each rare).
If you start to see a depreciation of Selensya by > 1 stdev (probably ~3-4/rare, ~1-2/mythic. These are guesses, I'm too lazy to bang out full statistics) Then you've got a solid theory. Otherwise, you're just spitting pure conjecture.
After rebooting it caused CTRL-V to delete the text of any card names in the post. I was able to figure it out, because it left behind the few cards that had typos in their name.
Removing the plugin fixed the problem.
It was probably only selective in that the posts that I tested didn't have any MTG card names that the plugin picked up.
Still curious about what caused it, but I realize that Its probably not on your end.
I swear this is a bug in the forum or I've gotta be gotta be going crazy.
I can't seem to paste text into the input field when editing a post. I've tried Ctrl-V, as well as selecting paste with the right click, but all it does is bring me to the bottom of the field.
If I'm starting a new thread, it works fine. It only fails to work when editing a post that has already been sent. I've verified this in the testing grounds.
Anyone else seen this before?
EDIT: Okay, it seems to work fine on this post (This text is copied over) but It wont work on my trade thread or a post I just made in the testing grounds.
perhaps this was already stated, but is anybody else concerned by the $75 MSRP on this thing?
I mean, even the FTV sets had an MSRP of $35 (although no store in their right mind would sell them at that price). Setting the bar at $75 only will inflate the value higher, assuming that this is a bit of a limited run.
