Personally, I like the card but not in mono-red. It shouldn't need it with the time you'd need to put the counters on it. But in something like BR or a control-ish red-leaking deck I could see this as a backup. 4/4 tokens are nothing to scoff at after a board wipe.

Mutilate's old art was better. Maybe because it's also in an old card frame.

Obviously it's a matter of opinion, but I totally agree. But there was something about the gruesomeness that it had. It freaked me out; I loved it.

Still, <3 this reprint, now that it's confirmed. Spelltwine... is weird. And hopefully not broken.

The Aven is NUTS. From a personal standpoint, too bad you have to be in white to even use it. But a 3 mana 3/2 flyer in blue is always welcome. And to give it the option of lifelink in that same combo is just amazing.

The Boar also looks good too but not as good as that Aven.

Memorial and the rest of the cycle... not so good. The Falcon actually made me facepalm.

    Quote from pwner1 »
Well so far if you don't count the basic lands, then of the 173 cards spoiled so far, at least 45 are constructed playable. That's not so bad..

    Quote from A_r_c_h_a_n_g_e_l »
Also I'm not very excited by this set. The amount of actual playables vs perceived playables is probably much lower and in reality nothing in the set really even makes me want to build a deck around it, except maybe Sublime Archangel. Maybe.

Personally, I'm not very excited about this set either and I initially thought, "Whaaaa?" when seeing that first quote. But after counting them up i do see about 30 solid constructed playables (but that counts the six lands) which, for a core set, is surprising. The problem is there isn't a single one that wows me and screams "Build it!" That still makes this a very lackluster core set thus far and one I know people are going to regret buying boxes of.

Therefore, I wonder, if a player controls a Vedalken Orrery or a Leyline of Anticipation, can they cast Serra Avenger during an opponent's first, second, or third turn of the game?

In the magiccards.info rules notes, it actually says you can do exactly that.

That being said, I'm not sure how good she's gonna be in standard. The time she would normally drop down is also around the same time BETTER three and four drops also come on board, which is pretty rough. Still, interesting to see her back.

When I looked on ebay at these I had to wonder what people were doing bidding these up to 8 bucks each? This card is godawful. And that doesn't begin to describe how bad it is.

Note: Feel free to quote this in a few months if he's suddenly a format MVP in standard. But I can't see that happening.

I don't think I can say no more right now. Just don't do it. Unless you play a LOT of casual and think a lot of the "junk" rares right now are fun to play with... then it MIGHT be worth it. But competitively, this core set stinks right now. That $90 might be better served picking up a playset (or two) of something from the set when it inevitably drops.

Yeah this just cinched me not buying a single draft/pack for this. Nothing to be excited over AND what looks like an extremely slow limited format. Count me out.

  • posted a message on I used to think banding was the worst mechanic. Now I realize that it's miracle
See the problem with Miracle isn't just the luck-based feel of the mechanic but rather that it works best around a mechanic type they knowingly banned key cards of in Modern MONTHS (and years in at least one case) before the mechanic itself arrived. And the mechanic type I refer to is that on Ponder, Preordain, and Sensei's Divining Top. All banned for either fueling combo too much or making the game unfun. Personally, I would've scrapped the keyword at the last minute and used their backup whatever that was. (And if they didn't have a backup, shame on them for being bad set designers.)

So for that reason, Miracle I say is worse than banding. At least w/ banding it's just difficult to understand. Miracle is just unfun to play with and against.

  • posted a message on Most blatant price hike you've ever seen?
Right before Flash just got BAH-ROKEN, I had a playset of them backordered for 6 bucks total since the store didn't keep them in stock. Then right after the preview of the card that made it broken, they cancelled my backorder, hiked them up to $75 each and told me to "go somewhere else" for them.

So, truth be told, this SCG stuff has been going on with other stores for YEARS. And it's always stunk.

  • posted a message on [M13] What would you first pick? (#3)
In this order: Pacifism, Sentinel Spider, Giant Scorpion. Switcheroo is kinda blah unless you've already drafted some of your creatures.

    Edit:
    Quote from dimir impersonator »
I don't think it's miles ahead of pacifism at all because it's a situational card whereas pacifisms only condition is that the card you want stopped can't have hexproof. There's plenty of situations where top decking switcheroo is a dead draw while pacifism almost never is.

And Switcheroo doesn't work on hexproof creatures anyway. So it's worse in my mind because of that.

  • posted a message on Will Onslaught fetch lands be reprinted?
I say these suckers get reprinted in either the 2013 fall expansion or the 2014 one. I'm not sure they're good for a core set because of the life clause but, otherwise, there's no reason for them not to reprint them for modern reasons since they're not legal there.

  • posted a message on [M13] Will Mill be a viable deck?
Ah, mill. Always a point of contention where I'm from. It's hella annoying to lose to and it's not very interactive with the other players... but always so fun to do. I don't know if it's viable (all prior signs point to NO), but if it is, look for tables to be flipped.

There shouldn't be issues. They reprinted Solemn Simulacrum in M12 and Voidmage Prodigy in the Time Spiral Timeshifted stuff, both of which came from player created cards.
