This list seems pretty well thought out. The only thing I would consider is more ways to use your opponents' stuff and your graveyard.

JWK posted a message on Sorin Markov's -3 AbilityPosted in: Commander (EDH)Quote from Tantarus
Of course you don't. Your doing the sorin to others, not having it done to yourself on turn 5 of a long game.
I've been on both ends of that exchange, and no, even after having it (and the Sphinx) aimed at me on multiple occasions, I'm not upset by this, for a lot of reasons. Some of them include:
1) Big, swingy plays are supposed to be part of what EDH is about.
2) If you aren't going to use Sorin in EDH, where are you going to use him? He's just plain terrible in any other format (and not really great in EDH, either, but at least playable there).
3) Sorin does offer a good way to keep in check someone who utilizes his or her life total as an active resource. Using Necropotence to draw 7 might seem less appealing if that puts someone at low enough life that a Lightning Bolt will kill them.
Note that I'm not saying you are wrong for not liking Sorin. However, you are wrong in assuming that everyone else will - or should - share your opinion of the card and of whether he is appropriate to this format, and in assuming that anyone who doesn't share your view is some sort of win-more griefer tryhard funsucker dick who is out to make EDH un-fun for other players. -

What's the general opinion on his -3 ability in EDH? I recently played in a group that had it banned as one of their house rules. You could use his other abilities, but not that one. I wasn't really a fan of that because EDH is the only format the card is playable in and mainly for that ability.
EDIT - D'oh, just realized I put 2 instead of 3 in the thread title.
Someone plays it, knocks someone to 10, and we go "huh, that sucks" and then I think there is a combat phase, and phase, and the next guy goes.
That's my opinion. It's a good card that is fun to play, sucks to play against, and isn't a problem at all. -

Overbeing_of_Myth posted a message on [[Official]] General Discussion of the Official Multiplayer BanlistPosted in: Commander Rules Discussion ForumQuote from SineSwiperI don't think there's enough consideration for cards that are banned in legacy, but not vintage or commander. There are plenty of unfun cards and/or "insta-includes" in the lot:
Earthcraft
Demonic Tutor
Imperial Seal
Goblin Recruiter
Land Tax
Mana Crypt
Mana Drain
Mana Vault
Memory Jar
Mystical Tutor
Necropotence
Skullclamp
Sol Ring
Strip Mine
Survival of the Fittest
Vampiric Tutor
Wheel of Fortune
Windfall
Yawgmoth's Will
One, why are many of these cards Restricted in Vintage/Classic, Banned in Legacy, and yet they are legal in Commander? WotC just doesn't randomly ban cards. Why are they impacted by so many different formats but not commander?
Two, the "insta-includes". Why are these dangerous and ban-worthy? Because EDH is about the variety of decks you can build, not making sure you have every staple card to keep your edge. How many decks DON'T have Sol Ring? There really should be zero cards that are "If you play color X, you should always put in card Y."
Eventually, it boils down to whoever has the "good times" deck is going to win, all because he's an extremely boring player, and one who spends quite a bit of money on his deck. I still don't have many of these cards because of the cost: Strip Mine, Vampiric Tutor (MTGO cost is $40), Demonic Tutor, Mystical Tutor, etc. I shouldn't have to spend all of that money on those cards, just because everybody else plays them. Everybody else shouldn't be playing them.
They are banned because legacy and EDH are two entirely different formats with two entirely different objectives. None of those cards you mentioned degenerate and warp the format. Are they broken? Yes. That's not a quality for banning.
The sol ring debate is over and done, it was printed in the commander precons... take a hint.
Who are you to say I SHOULDN'T buy vampiric tutor and play it? it's my money. If money is a problem, play pauper edh or get a play group that fits your vision of EDH. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

Butcher of Malakir, High Priest of Penance, Obzedat, Ghost Council, Night's Whisper, and False Cure are cards that could easily be cut. I understand that the false cure is in here for the combo with beacon of immortality. I just am not convinced that it is that good of a combo that is reliable enough to justify a card that has little use outside of the combo.
Cutting these cards allows you to add cards from your list of cards you want to add and some that are not on your list.
First I would like to point out that Debtors' knell is a great card for this deck. It does great things and can be fetched into play with academy rector.
So a list of cards that I would say you could add in here would be:
Debtors' knell
Vizkopa Guildmage
Martyr's Bond
Palace Siege
Phyrexian Reclamation
Feel free to look at my athreos deck in my signature to get some ideas. I know it isn't an extort one, but I feel that this deck will be very grindy. My deck is the same, so outside extort cards, my deck could offer you many good ideas.

During that players turn, I cast lethal vapors and had that player activate the 0 ability 1,000,000,000 times. He was not very happy with me. Not that it has to due with the effect of the card, but he still has not played a game with me.

Let me state this upfront. I think many things should be unban. I actually think the ban list could be 10 cards but that is not what I want to discuss. You said you want reasons for Staff to remain ban? I can play devils advocate.
Staff of domination is an enabler. Not only does it work with infinite mana it can help create infinite mana and then it can draw the whole deck. It makes infinite mana with magus of the coffers. I would know, I played this in my mono black deck. The card is quite powerful and can win games easily. The card becomes broken with very little work involved. If you want to unban it then we also should unban a few other cards. Painters servant, protein hulk, Panoptic mirror, recurring nightmare, and gifts ungiven. All of these cards are really fun to play with and can be completely fair. Saying that you are going to use in a fair way is not a justification for it to be unbanned. If you are going to use it in a fair way and not break it discuss it with your play group. Explain that you understand how it works and that you won't even accidentally break it. The card is very very powerful. If you are deluding yourself to think otherwise then I am sorry. The card with any creature that taps for 5 mana or more gives you infinite mana which can then allow you to draw until you get another combo that can finish everyone. The card is really good.
The only reason I only mentioned Magus of the Coffers is because that is the card I used when it was legal. Then you have a reason to keep it ban.
Also, keep in mind that this is not my personal opinion. I just hate it when people say, "Well I can't think of a reason, therefore there is no reason." Ignorance is not a quality I would pride myself on sir.
