Hey D.G can you let us know what type of 1/16 foam you use and where about's we might procure it. I live 10 minutes away from a Micheals, Hobby Lobby and Jo-Ann fabrics as well as Walmart and Target. Would any of these fine retailers have said foam and is it double sided adhesive as well?
I have not found this at craft stores. One roll should last you a long time; took me ~50 3Ds before I finished my first roll. New 3Ds hopefully sometime soon...
@MistaKuraudo: I believe d.g uses double sided tape like material to keep his cards together (not 100% sure). I would say that his pieces are some of the most amazing ones i've seen. That separation between the cards, in my opinion, gives them a "held in space" beauty. Its hard to explain, but I actually like that floating look.
I use 1/16" foam that has adhesive on both sides. I like it because it provides uniform spacing between all the main layers and it easy/clean to apply. It also helps make all my 3Ds look somewhat similar in terms of spacing.
Any middle-layer objects are done by stacking or floating pieces, so you can still do complicated layering with this approach. I didn't like how messy and time consuming it was to glue layers either by using large glue drops as spacing or cutting and gluing a large number of cards with the art box cut out. The latter approach does build quite a sturdy card, though. I figure you shouldn't be throwing 3Ds around in the first place, so the sturdiness I lose by using foam is not such a big deal : )
A new 3D I did. The second photo shows my original idea, which was to use a blank foil background. I ended up not liking it, even though that picture looks cool. For the next few 3Ds, I'll be working on the Dragons, Wurms, and Drakes I mentioned previously.
To the regular readers of this thread: what do you want to see more of? More 3Ds? More tutorials? More walkthroughs? Please let me know : )
See, that's the thing, I do something most other 3d alterers don't ... I paint cards. I did a bit of brainstorming and I think I have an idea. It will be the craziest thing I will have ever done. It might also be the most complex..... I don't want to give too much away, as I'm still not sure if I can pull it off. I'll know for sure by tonight when I get home. I will definitely share a bit more if I am successful.
That sounds like it takes actual talent --- something I am quite short on : )
Color palette tests; determining the best combination of colors for Mimeoplasm's unique color.
The final color palette.
Hey guys,
Above is a commission of The Mimeoplasm, which I have gotten MANY requests for. At one point I really thought I'd be buying enough of these for commissions to upset the supply and demand of the card itself : ) The buyer asked for lots of WIP photos to learn more about the 3D process, so above are a few photos that show my process for selecting the color palette. Also above is a 3D of Amulet of Kroog, a card by Margaret Organ-Keen. The center of the amulet is fully 3D, best seen by the curled tail in the second photo.
Have you tried using extra magic cards as spacers to fill the space on the sides?
Also do you think Stoic Angel would make a good 3d card?
Hi timebeing,
I like the foam spacing because it is simple and clean. Using the card spacers is somewhat messy because you need to glue them all together. it's also very time consuming...so I have not tried doing both together, though I have done each individually.
I do like Stoic Angel...admittedly I will probably add this to my next order for 3D cards : ) That artist (Volkan Baga) has a lot of great cards to 3D, unfortunately many of them are very expensive, such as Mox Opal and Snapcaster Mage.
Some new cards I did over the holidays. I did 3-4 others, but they're not quite finished. They'll be up soon! After reading Drew's 3D Dragons article I ordered a bunch to 3D, including some Drakes and Wurms for good measure. Expect to see them in the near future, as well.
An old WIP, mostly done besides inking the sides of the art box.

Simple one, haven't had much free time lately : / Hopefully more 3Ds soon.

Finally got a few extra copies of this card and had the time to finish it! More to come soon, hopefully.

It's just normal ink; I think making clean cuts helps bring out the gloss. Some colors in my set also are much more glossy, particularly black.
I also use a few shaping tools which might help bring out some gloss on the face of the cards/edges.

You can remove the ink from a foil card with acetone to give a "blank" foil.

A simple one I finished over the weekend. Looks like there's lots of good art to 3D in Dark Ascension : )

My only dislike is that the pictures are not bigger/enlargeable!
